Obit: Barbara Bel Geddes

I am sure most people will remember Barbara for Dallas, but I want to put in a word for her role in Vertigo -- the thankless task of the pal, the-not-Kim Novak, the real woman. Her final walkaway in the movie is one of the most moving moments in movies.

Thanks, Barbara,

yours,

Peter T.

A favorite early Barbara Bel Geddes movie is I Remember Mama with Irene Dunn. Such a great story and premise, and was a good start for a serious young actress.

There was such an odd flip-flop with that Dallas program. Bel Geddes left (due to her health, I think), was replaced by Donna Reed, and then Reed was (apparently without notice) given the boot and Bel Geddes returned. Both were excellent addresses, and it didn't speak well for the producers of the program to handle it that way.

I don't know how that one happened--may have been a typo that was "fixed" by a spell-checker. I've notice the spelling check going a little nuts lately (may be my poor typing, or doing too many things at once!)

We were given to understand that Donna Reed was given the push because the vast majority of fans wanted Barbara back - Miss Ellie will always be Barbara.

I can't believe she was only 80something... She always made Miss Ellie feel so much older... a great character actress who should have gone on to better things.

Being a Danny Kaye fanatic, beginning in 1958, I watched the movie The Five Pennies a number of times. Barbara Bel Geddes played the wife of Red Nichols (Danny Kaye). Louis Armstrong also appeared. It was a wonderful movie, and her part, though mostly sad, was memorable and touching. --Linda
