11 Aug 05 - 10:28 PM (#1540821) Subject: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST,Hullo The mates were in the pub tonight arguing over Eric Bogle and Jez Lowe and trying to decide who the champion songwriter is. I used to think Bogle but lately I'm going more and more for Lowe. What says you? |
11 Aug 05 - 10:38 PM (#1540836) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Le Scaramouche JEZ LOWE!!!!!!! Leagues ahead of Bogle in my book. |
11 Aug 05 - 10:54 PM (#1540847) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST,Shanghaiceltic Jez Lowe but Eric Bogle is still good. |
11 Aug 05 - 11:34 PM (#1540893) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: DonMeixner apples and oranges, both exceptional. |

12 Aug 05 - 12:06 PM (#1541080) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: RobbieWilson Bogle has written some of the best, but not for a number of years. His manner has put me off the last couple of times I saw him. Jez Lowe still does good stuff but nothing to match Bogle's Bonny Best |
12 Aug 05 - 12:09 PM (#1541084) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Charley Noble Not my kind of game. They both write and sing some fine songs. I would travel hours to hear either one live. Case closed. Charley Noble |
12 Aug 05 - 12:25 PM (#1541096) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Tam the man I like Eric Bogle and Jez Lowe, but Eric is for me because I've seen him live more times than Jez Lowe, who is at the Marymass Festival at Irvine Scotland. Tam |
12 Aug 05 - 04:19 PM (#1541263) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST,Tunesmith Everytime I hear Jez, I'm very impressed with how good he is, but for some reason I have never bought one of his albums. I don't think Jez has written that "universal" song yet - the one that touches thousands and thousands of hearts. Eric has - more than once! |
12 Aug 05 - 07:46 PM (#1541385) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: gnomad From the work I have heard so far then EB does it for me. The fact that this is deemed worthy of debate simply tells me I should investigate JL, of whom I admit to knowing less than I should. |
13 Aug 05 - 11:06 AM (#1541784) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Susanne (skw) I like them both, with Jez's songwriting more consistently good while Eric has written some exceptional stuff in both directions. But if it's a question of who is best, then Brian McNeill is leagues ahead of both for writing exceptionally good songs exceptionally consistently. |

20 Aug 05 - 02:48 PM (#1546359) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Leadfingers I am with Don M here , Apples and oranges ! -Perhaps Eric has had a more universal appeal with some of his , but Jez doesnt just write good lyrics - A Hell of a lot of Jez's stuff stands as TUNES , not just songs ! |
20 Aug 05 - 11:27 PM (#1546400) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST Eric is a poet who knows how to select exactly the right words to convey his message and stir the emotions. Look at his lyrics closely and you'll be amazed at how one specific word just makes the entire idea so much more poignent. Jez Lowe is good but Eric is tops in my book. But since I'm just Guest no one probably cares what I have to say. Because as we all know, Guest doesn't really exist. |
21 Aug 05 - 01:48 AM (#1546439) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Dave Hanson Why should one have to be better than the other ? they are both exceptional songsmiths, enjoy them both. Silly thread on the whole, it's like when I was at school and you had to choose between mods and rockers. eric |
21 Aug 05 - 07:25 AM (#1546501) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: cobber Yeah we were the same. Who's better - Beatles or Rolling Stones. This is a stupid question anyway and why restrict yourself to just these two. Judy Small also writes songs that stop you dead. |
21 Aug 05 - 03:08 PM (#1546642) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST,cookieless celtaddict Eric writes some fine stuff; have not heard Jez Lowe as often as I would like; many great songwriters out there, and many more who have written one or more great songs. And many GUESTS out there who have contributed richly and well. Welcome, GUEST of 1127; you might consider joining us, for free, so we know it is you. An online persona has advantages in interaction, which is one of the advantages of Mudcat. |
21 Aug 05 - 04:36 PM (#1546691) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: shepherdlass Horses for courses, really. If Jez hasn't written that "universal" song for people outside of the NE, he's done it several times for those of us within this region. Anyway, "Who's best?" is always a subjective debate and there are so many good songwriters out there, each one with a song that particularly touches particular people. And they don't have to be obviously poetic: Robbie Williams seems to have done it for a lot of folk recently, going on his hatches/matches/dispatches popularity! |
22 Aug 05 - 06:17 AM (#1546940) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: mooman Both are exceptional but I'd opt for Richard Thompson as a personal favourite and consistently good songwriter (I was lucky to catch a free open-air Richard Thompson + Danny Thompson gig here in Brussels this Saturday... brilliant!). Peace moo |
22 Aug 05 - 06:44 AM (#1546943) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Le Scaramouche Eric Bogle is just a little too acrimonious for my tastes. |
22 Aug 05 - 07:29 AM (#1546964) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: John Routledge Having seen Eric Bogle berate a mainly scottish audience in Kelso a few years back I can only agree with La Scaramouche. Pretty unpleasant. Coming from Jez Lowe land makes me fair minded of course :0) |
22 Aug 05 - 08:19 AM (#1547004) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: muppitz I like both but prefer Jez. The first time I saw Jez was at Cleethorpes festival some 10 years ago, he was doing a solo gig at the Winter Gardens and I was en route to the craft stalls, I stood for his entire set as there were no seats, it was worth it in my opinion! I have Eric's Live CD but haven't had the pleasure of seeing him live. muppitz x |
22 Aug 05 - 01:58 PM (#1547218) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: GUEST,Tunesmith I will say that I feel that Jez is the more consistantly good writer. Eric has written some very ordinary songs. |
22 Aug 05 - 06:55 PM (#1547374) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Girl Friday Eric Bogle's songs may be good, but I am only familiar with a few of them. Jez is far more accessible , as he actually lives in this country , and comes down south a lot. Being a club organiser I know Jez , as well as his music , and have his entire c.d. releases. Yes , I am a fan , and have travelled to see him many times. Still , I notice , some of you are throwing other names into this discussion. One of the best is Ron Trueman - Border. Resident of my Club , though he is so in demand that we don't see him too often. |

24 Aug 05 - 12:05 AM (#1548280) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Briagha Jez gets my vote for consistency, both with great lyrics and inventive tunes. Bogle has written some amazing and profound stuff, but I think he cheapens himself with lyrics about road-kill cats and amorous liasons between St. Bernards and Chihuahuas. He also has an amazing capacity to depress a perfectly happy person. Who mentioned Brian McNeill earlier? I agree- he's amazing. Also Robin Laing, who paints some great "mind pictures" with his words. |
24 Aug 05 - 07:11 AM (#1548420) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Strollin' Johnny Another pointless discussion IMHO. There are scores, hundreds, maybe thousands of writers who write great songs. To try and define 'The Best' is impossible and pointless - as with all things, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. S:0) PS: I like 'em both |
24 Aug 05 - 08:07 AM (#1548470) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: Tam the man we had Jez Lowe here at Irvine for the Marymass folk festival, and we found out that Jez Lowe is Right handed. Tam |
24 Aug 05 - 08:27 AM (#1548482) Subject: RE: Eric Bogle or Jez Lowe From: John Routledge If there is anyone who has not heard Jez Lowe : can highly recommend 21 Oct at Swinton. The White Lion is the sort of venue where Jez is magical. |
