He says, if you have just a turn-table you will have to use a pre-amp with an RIAA equalisation. If it's a player like ours with a speaker system, either use the earphone jack or plug into the speaker with the right cable to hook up to your hard-drive. Play them onto the hard drive, then burn them to CD. When I did this with some 78's and also reel-to-reel tapes, I used the "Audacity" progam, recommended by other Mudcatters and free online. If you have a turntable and an amplifier or receiver, your speakers connect in the back. Just go to radio shack and get a stereo mini-plug(it has an extra band between the tip and the hilt.) Make yourself a connector wire with the bare wires on one end and the mini-plug on the other. Then, if you have a cd drive in your computer that writes, and the software that goes with it, just connect the bare wires to the speaker output on your amp or receiver and the mini-plug into your sound card in back of your computer. Look at the software, it will tell you how to record. You're also all set up to record from your casette or your radio by switching your selector. |

This can be connected to your sound card via a stereo 3.5mm plug into 2 3.5mm socket adaptor. I then use Groove Mechanic software to separate the tracks, remove the clicks and hisses etc. Groove Mechanic produces .wav files from your LP/CD, it's then a simple matter to burn your compilation to a CD, here's a link to Coyote Electronics who supply an evaluation copy of Groove Mechanic. I put several hundred lps on cd and am very happy with the results. I was careless about marking tracks so sometimes there is a little inconvenience there. Among my records was one by Leonard Warren, an LP called Rolling Down to Rio. It was mostly Kipling; Gunga Din, Danny Deever, Road to Mandalay, etc. Wonderful. These dated to the early 50s into the 70s and though I spent a lot of time on it, it was so well worth it. I also have been able to replace a few that had disappeared over the years by going to ebay. I had a lot of 45s but decided I was never going to do anything with them so donated them to a local charity shop--just a few months before I bought the recorder. |

In both cases the pre-amps input ground noise that I could not eliminate. Success was gained by utilizing a regular amplifier and taking the signal from the earphone jack and feeding that into the line-in of the sound card. This also allowed me to use the volume control and balance to optimize the incoming signal. |
