August Shanty/Forebitter Session (NH)

This Saturday, 20 August will be the date for the monthly shanty/ forebitter sing at the Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth NH. Attendence has been a bit sparse this Summer, especially last month. We're really hoping for at least a modest show of singers and listeners this week.

If there are any newcomers who'd like to join in the fun, please post here and I'll add more particulars. Pub fare, good beer and spirits available - Tom

I should be there and will be bringing a friend from the UK who is into folk music.

Looking forward to it.

I will be there but have to work until 4:30 at the lighhouse so I will be a little late.

Twill be good to meet your friend, Jacqui. Sorry about that work stuff, Mary, but we'll hold a place for you. Alison Freeman will also be there.

With a bit of luck, the weather will remain just too cool for the air conditioner.

See you Saturday - Tom

I think I'll be coming up.

What time does everything get started?

Great to hear from you, Deb. Starting time is 3:30 or as soon as there are enough singers to make up a reasonable chorus - Tom

Holy Mother of Pearl - Deb Cowan's a-comin'!!!

And Jacqui's friend-from-the-UK-who-is-into-folk-music (FFUKWIIFM)!!!
Must dust off (and print out - haha) a repertoire. Too late to develop one. Of course, if enough folks show up, I won't need that many songs.

Acronym's not so good.
Refresheroonie, because this is today. Today is Saturday because yesterday was Friday. I know this because at around 9 PM (2100 for you cross-ponders) I recall looking at my computer clock and saying "Crap. It's Friday, and it's probably been Friday all damn day!"

Deb C is coming. WOW! Bonny Ship The Diamond, maybe?

Bonny Ship the Diamond?? I didn't know that I knew that one..well, I do know it, but it's never been in the sets, not since the old Tar'd & Feather'd days in California. I'll sing harmonies though if someone fires it up.

Is there parking available near the PR?

Deb

Parking is on the street. 2-hour limit (which they might enforce someday) .25 for 20 minutes.

There's a municipal lot at the 'from' end of Daniel St and the 'to' end of State St. You turn left to got to Daniel St, then take another left into the lot. This is simpler than I'm making it sound. Just avoid crossing the bridge to Maine, and you'll find the lot on your left. Parking costs the same as the street.

There's a parking garage on Hanover St, about 3 blocks away. This comes in handy when there's a particularly heavy infestation of tourists.

I usually prefer treet parking, but sometimes you have to drive around a bit. Luckily, the weather looks a bit sucky today, so there might not be as many mobile speed bumps as you have to dodge on a typical Saturday.

There are lots of on-street parking places around the Press Room. Unfortunately, they're frequently full of cars. But usually, a few turns around the block will yield results. Also, mid afternoon on Saturday is not a popular time for in-town activities.

If all else fails, proceed straight on Daniel Street, after passing the Press Room, into Market Square and take the first permissible right to the parking garage; its only a couple blocks away and you don;t have to keep running out to feed the meters.

See you this PM - Tom

Hey Tom, is Jeff Warner still doing the Whorehouse, or might he be there?

Jeff is planning to come by. He's leaving for England tomorrow, so may need time to get ready for that. Also Bruce and Dave H. should be around, and maybe Steve Carrigan too. Barbara's at the Ottowa Festival this weekend.

DOH!
I meant Bulgine Run.
And I guess Bruce sang it before we arrived.
Short but lovely for me. A real thrill meeting Deb and hearing her sing.
Gosh I am tired of running and getting wherever late, Good to see/hear everyone.
Next month...

Short but sweet - my friend, now a Mudcatter called lizard lady, loved what we got to listen to. She runs a couple of sessions in the UK, as a non-participant, and really enjoys the music. I'm glad she's got to know some of the 'Catters at the Press Room - she'll probably feel more comfortable when she starts lurking and maybe doing the occasional post.

It was a real treat to hear Debra and Jeff in the same session!

I had a great time. It was wonderful to see Jeri, Lynn and Tom again. It was laso wonderful meeting Jacqui, Mary (finally! after a few years) and Jacqui's friend, Lizard Lady.

And what is very cool is that I always hear new songs that I have never heard before in these sessions.

I hope to attend a few more.

Oh yeah...and I'll see you all again on 9/25 :-)

Best,
Deb
