Good luthier in the DC area

I'm looking for a good luthier in the DC area to repair my mandolin. It sounded great for a long time and now it sounds awful. Yes, I've tried putting new strings on it. I'm so sad that I can't play it. Can anyone recommend a good luthier in the DC area and give me the contact information? I called IMT and they recommended Steve Carmody. I called the number they gave me for him and it was the wrong number. I'd appreciate some good advice.

Pauline:

He may be retired by now, but Jim Bumgardner used to be one of the best. His phone number was 301-622-4397. He lived on New Hampshire Avenue close to the White Oak Library. I haven't tried to contact him in three or four years though.

Thanks, Jim. Now I remember him. He was very, very good. I'll call him.

Mr Bumgardner passed away on January 2006.

I heard of Jim's passing at the Mini-fest in early February. What a loss to the community. Not only was he a great luthier, but it was worth taking your instruments to him, just to sit and chat and hear stories of the past.
