Incidentally, heard it on Mike Harding's show on radio 2 last night. Having criticised the program here n the past, last night was excellent, perhaps because it was a request show instead of the usual. He did insist on talking over the introductions & endings though.

The DJ's try to cram so much babble into their shows they will often times talk right over the intros of GOOD songs. In many songs the opening instrumental bars are as important to the song as the lyrics, they tend to set the mood in many cases. Couple that to the fact that only about one out of five is music that I happen to like and want to hear, (realizing that I am not the only one and others probably like those I don't), causes me to play many cassettes and CD's, or even more drastic, some old LP's. Anyway, having gotten that off my chest, I will now ,ake it through the day! ;) |

Thanks again Banjer - glad I'm not the only one. Started to think maybe I'm getting old & fussy, but I agree. I LIKE the intros, they are there for a reason. Just think what would happen to all the wonderful 1940s & 50s songs! In so many the introductory verse leaves you guessing until the last second what well known standard is about to caress you (or cuff you about the ears I suppose!) real pleasure, easily and regularly spoiled by DJs who think they are more important than the music. Until recently I'd not noticed this in folk music, but now I have it will only serve to reduce the time I spend listening to music radio. Come back Jim Lloyd - Folk on 2 needs you!

I think in most cases, that was just a side-effect. Mike Harding started off years ago talking over the rest of his band's tuning, and the story-telling just took over in time. I think he just likes talking; nothing wrong with that, he's entertaining to listen to, but at the right time, please, Mike! Oh gosh, is Mike Harding a Mudcatter? (If not, why not?) Steve |
