Happy Birthday!

Thomas Francis Meagher ("mar")

born Aug. 23, 1823, County Waterford
(d.July 1, 1867)

Irish revolutionary leader and orator who became a Union Brig. General during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1866, some 1200 Fenian troops, mostly from Meagher's Irish Brigade, invaded Canada, crossing at Buffalo. The Loyalists were routed, in one of the Fenian's only victories. His bio is worth reading - quite a character in an era of characters.

He features in a number of traditional songs. I like

General Meagher to us he said
If you get shot or lose your head
Every mother's son of you will get a pension.
In the war I lost me leg
All I've now is a wooden peg
By my soul it is the truth to you I'll mention.

                "By the Hush"

It's pronounced "Ma=her", by the way.
