Although the 'Cat has had plenty of hiccups in the last few months, they are getting fewer and fewer. SO that's a very good thing for those of us who gobble up its bandwidth every day. But even more impressive is the quantum leap in speed of response it has been showingin the last 6-10 weeks, I think. I can load the whole MOAB thread in descending order without killing the Cat or crashing any processes, in under about 40 secs generally, and other, more normal-size requests come zooming back in a second or perhaps three. This is head and shoulders above the performance we had in 2003 and earlier. LOng DB searches are similarly significantly faster. So, Max and Jeff, it is clear something right is going on. Well done. Down there in sunny San Diego you are still in your pit when I fire up here in 'the old country' and sadly almost 50% of the time Mudcat is unavailable at that time of day. Also for the last few nights it has been kicking us all out of the Chatroom with monotonous regularity, and it's fast getting to the stage when I just don't bother to go back after I've been kicked out, preferring instead to rendezvous on another site. There has been a small improvement since Max hooked up a different machine a bit ago, but the system is still obviously creaking at the joints. Still Max is working on it, and I hope some volunteers who responded to his appeal for help, so we can but await results. Still bitch occasionally, but that's just frustration. Giok |

Monday 22nd was so bad I was reading comments from others like: It's up! It's down! It's up! It's down! I'm getting seasick! ------ It's down! It's up! It's down! It's less like a Mudcat... and more like a toilet seat at a mixed party... --- These comments were made by various people most of whom one would not consider critics of Mudcat. All that said, I wonder whether the extreme failures we witnessed on Monday were perhaps in part symptoms of re-boots while another configuration was set up. It has been my observation, this time supported by lack of comments from others that matters have improved since then so perhaps another effort was made. Tuesday was good and today so far has been good. |

(It IS harder for those in distant time zones, when Mudcat goes down in the middle of the night when the official pants-kickers are getting a bit of sleep... I dunno what to do about that...) |

The most common down time by far is the one I wake up to and that certainly when all good people in MCland would be asleep but there is also the more curios one, again perhaps with a logical explaination. UK chattime is often bad. Say 6-7pm Mudcat time. |

The Mudcat has been faster when it's up, and the crashes seem to last less time. My main thought: beggars can't be choosers. Few of us probably pay anywhere near (through direct cash offerings or auction items) our share of what Mudcat is worth to us. If we paid to be here, then the whining might be legitimate. SRS |
