I will be visiting Iceland September 1-11. Any traditional music we should try to track down? (I did PM Skarpi too though I have not run across him online of late.)

Have you been there before? I've been there twice. If you haven't been, you are in for a wonderful experience. Iceland's beauty is incredible.

Sorry I can't tell you about any trad, though. Have you checked with the Iceland Tourist Board? I've found them helpful. Under "Tours and Activities" they have boxes in which to search for concerts and culture.

Another thing to do is to ask at the lodging where you are staying. Hotel (etc) managers often have local knowledge.

I lived there for a couple of years, 1979-1981, and am really eager to go back; it is an incredibly beautiful and fascinating land. We are staying at some guesthouses with actual hosts so I will definitely check with them.

I know of a fellow who is a Scandinavian/Nordic musician who is coming
to Iceland next srping, May 2006, if you have any suggestions to him
about where, who, what, etc. please post here...I have alerted him to
this thread and he is in touch with Skarpi already--a good embassador!

I am a fiddler who plays Scandinavian music and I will also be visiting Iceland. (There seem to be a number of folks in a similar situation.) I will be there in late May and early June.

I've already had a very nice email from Skarpi, but would also be interested in making other contacts as I will be traveling all around the island. I don't usually read Mudcat Cafe threads, so it would be best if people emailed me directly:

Can I come with? Iceland is another place I've always wanted to see up close.

Do plan it! I wished while I was living there I had the opportunity to roam more widely (medical duties gave me a short leash) and have been waiting literally decades for a chance to go back. The friend I planned this with is a stamp collector who became fascinated by this country he has never seen. It is beautiful, and fascinating, and the history pokes its head into daily life as the boulders poke into the fields.

AND Skarpi tells me there is a traditional music venue/pub in Reykjavik called Celtic Cross. What more could one ask?

I can confirm what Leadfingers writes about Skarpi, Rosa and Helgi - apart from fine music you also get something beautiful to see (but for that neither Skarpi nor Helgi is [are? not sure about grammar here] necessary (and no, I don't mean the also beautiful Hardanger Fiddle)
