Well, gol dangit...

Look like when I made my palns to do 3 days of recordin' in Mississippi back in March I din't know that I'd be arrivin' in Memphis and rentin' a subcompact (without oars...) and be drivin' stright down Highway 55 into the teeth of a danged herricane but...

...looks like that is the story...

Well, ahhhh, too late now so, hey, the Lord looks after fools and kids an' with that double coverage, I should be jus' fine... An' yes, I can swim... Wsa a life guard back when...

But, boy, I wish I could fast forward gettin' to Thaxton, Mississippi...

Did I mention that I'll be stayin' in a trailer while down there???

Yo Bobert--just don't go drivin' into the puddles when you are toolin' down 61, ya hear? If ya can't see the road, then don't try finding it with the car.

Boberdz...

You are aware that during major hurricane evacuations like this one Interstate 55 through Mississippi is closed to southbound traffic and all four lanes are made northbound? You may have to take US 51 south from Memphis. If you do, expect traffic to be bad as it will be carrying all the southbound traffic 55 usually carries. And if the weather gets bad enough that you have to pull off the highway, don't park under trees. Katrina's already killed people by dropping trees onto their parked cars.

The good news, Bobert, is most of the traffic will be heading the other way.

But have a wonderful and safe trip.

Definitely use some common sense Bobert, and stay home or turn around before you get in trouble. Right now Katrina is predicted to come right up the middle of Ole' Miss. I have been through a hurricane, though not one this strong. Inland they are perhaps even more dangerous than along the coast. (trees and signs and tornados and floods, and building codes that require a place to withstand hurricane force winds.)

Cell phones may or may not work, depends on any damage to the cell tower.

For about $5 at truckstops you can get a self-heating meal that doesn't need refrigeration. You might want to tuck one aboard. Beef jerky is also good. I'd take several liter-sized bottles of water. If you don't need it, great -- it ain't all that expensive.

Take a blanket and pillow and couple of them great big green garbage bags, too. One of them lightsticks can be useful as well.

But hey, livin' in a car, singing the blues -- what more do you want?

I'd go for it too Bobert. I mean, what's the worst that can happen besides you get stuck in a no tell motel, waiting for the weather to break so you can drive on through to your destination?

Sure, take water, munchies, flashlights, mosquito repellent, whatever you feel you must have (always a personal list!) to hold you over for a day or two. But hey--like these storms don't last a week, ya know? If you make it there before it hits and there is a safe place to weather the storm, why not?

Man who don't take a chance ain't got one.

Won't be any rooms available in no-tell motels (or any other kind) in Mizzippi for a few days. They're already filled up with people evacuating New Orleans. If conditions are too bad when ya get to Memphis, just stay at the airport until they improve.

Won't make no never mind, Bobert. That hurricane's gonna hit Louisiana. Won't touch Mississippi at all. Jist like the big snows when I lived near the Indiana/Michigan border -- "Heavy snow in Michigan" and we jist KNEW that it'd stop at the state line, that Indiana would be all warm and with palm trees wavin' in the breeze and them Michiganders would be shovelin' snow, wearing fur parkas, jist lookin' at us lollin' around in the sunshine.

I'll be evacuating out of New Orleans in a few hours, heading north into Mississippi, but not nearly as far north as where Bobert's gonna be. We'll still be safe enough.

The Delta/Memphis area is FAR inland. They'll get a hell of a rainstorm, but Katrina won't be a hurricane any more by the time it gets that far north. There will be evacuees driving that far north, perhaps adding a little more trarric than normal, but that should be it.

Also, I-55 is northbound in both directions only in Louisiana and a few miles into Mississippi (as far as Belhaven or so, I believe), and only until about 4pm today (Sunday).

Now, the storm will affect almost as much of Mississippi as Louisiana, but that's the GULF COAST, hundreds of miles south of Thaxton. In fact, the Mississippi Gulf Coast will be on the "wrong" side of the eye and probably sustain as much wind damage as anywhere in Louisiana and almost as much flooding.

Ummmmph. Well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. How does P-vine look in black? Lots of folks survive hurricanes all the time. But a trailer? Remember that the translation of that word is "tornado magnet", and there are a lot of weird weather severities spawned by hurricanes. Of course, the later posters have reminded us of how far inland you'll be--rain and wind likely, but not murderous.

Safe out and safe home to you. (sound of glasses clinking) Let us know how it goes.                Tw

Funny eh, how near 60 % a North America is Cat'lic, and thems like the Jeesly Hovahs and all still don't get it that if the Cat'lics was as intolerant as them, there wouldn't be any a them.

Of course they will help people in a hurricane, but probably not advance them dough for a new car, tuck them into their own family beds, and treat them like close kin-- which is how a fellow pastor's family WOULD be treated. If Bobert needs help he can't handle on his own, it will be BIG help (he can handle near about anything his own self), and that's what I offered. ANd if the Catholic church would do that too-- hey, great!

Well, you might have noticed from the reports out of New Orleans, they tilt towards Rome. And I believe there is quite a difference between Protestant and Catholic attitudes towards meeting community needs.

My very Catholic sister isn't evacuating--staying behind in the path of the eye in downtown New Orleans, to stay with a colleague who just had heart surgery, and two elderly nuns too frail to be moved. In fact, Tulane/Xavier Universities are staying put (much to my dismay). Not only are there many students already there with no place to go (they can't get into the Superdome), and they plan on helping with rescue and clean up as soon as the storm ends. The Campus Police this afternoon estimated around 175 students and staff at Xavier, and around 225 at Tulane, who will ride it out on campus.

Speaking of thread drift!

1. Hope everyone comes through this safely. Property damage is secondary.

2. Bobert is about 400 miles due North of Orleans and the storm will drift to the east while losing strength-already down somewhat.

3. Bobert/Katrina "drifted" into Theology and name calling. Why can't we address the peresons' comments rather than the the persons' character.

4. ,,,,,,,,and don't forget, the Hamsters are still hurting.

Golly! I certainly am hoping that our neighbors, including Bobert, in the path of K's winds are safe. Perhaps it IS a good idea to send help through the Red Cross or other organizations. Blood donations may be needed, also. We might also check with our own home religious facilities, since most likely, various churches/temples/synagogues will be in touch with their denominations/friends through the storm areas & will help them meet the needs of the folks hit by the storm. Just imagine if all 'Catters put forth the hand of friendship to those in the storm's path--everyone who needs assistance would probably get it!

Bobert, if you read this from on the road, it's time to go home. There's no point in trying to go to Mississippi to make a recording now. Too many people have their minds, hearts, and resources in other areas right now. Help out a little while you're in town if you get that far, then head back to Virginia while you still can afford the gas to get you there. And we'll look forward to an opportunity in the future when you can try that trip again.

Sorry about all of this. But it's just too big, isn't it?

Tell the P-Vine hello from us when you get back home.

Bobert and Poppagator have both checked in over at Tweedsville.

Well, well, well...

Yeah, I'm fine... Made it down here to Thaxton, Mississippi yesterday mornin' an me and Mississipppi Tom done spent the last day an'a half in his Mud Creek Stdio, which I have renamed the Litlle Tater Barn Studio (different story...)...

Well, I done good and we got 25 ssongs down... Now they need session players to come in and fill 'um up wid percussion, bassm harmonica and the like but I is done and I is beat...

Tomorrow is the Howlin' Wolf Festival in West Pont, Mississisppi tnen saturday they got another festival o' sorts in West Point with over 400 venders which I'm lookin[' forward to...

Then, maybe, just maybe, a little of Otha's Turner's annual "goat roast"... Nah, ain't eatin' no goat... Maybe play a little music... Maybe drenk a few cold beers'... Maybe tell a few lies... Bit ain't no lie that I ain't eatin' no goat....

BTW, when you all see Mississippi Tom comin' 'round, he's the real deal and wants to do some some interestin' stuff with folk muscians so you all keep an open mind if he comes 'round offerin' somethin' that sounds too good to be true.... It's the real deal...

Good for you, Sidewalk Bob. Way to keep on keepin' on.

I must apologize for earlier having pooh-poohed any concerns about Katrina's effect on Thaxton and environs. Amazingly, the storm really DID have a serious impact well into north Mississippi, but bad as it was (and still is, I suppose), it's a mere inconvenience compared to the life-and-death stuff going on down home in NO.

Hope y'all catliks and prosstints work out yer differences. It was starting to sound a bit like the north of Ireland for a while there...
