All I know about the song is that it's on John Hammond's latest album. Any info, lyrics and chords welcome.

Cheers,
Michael

COMES LOVE
(composed by Sam H. Stept, with lyrics by Lew Brown and Charles Tobias)

Comes a rainstorm - put your (rubbers / wellies) on your feet
Comes a snowstorm - you can get a little heat
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

Comes a fire - then you know just what to do
Blow a tyre - you can buy another (shoe / tube)
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

Don't try hidin' - coz there isn't any use
You'll start slidin' - when your heart turns on the juice !

Comes a headache - you can lose it in a day
Comes a toothache - see your Dentist right away
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

Comes a heatwave - you can hurry to the shore
Comes a summons - you can hide behind the door
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

Comes the measles - you can quarantine the room
Comes a mousey - you can chase it with a broom
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

That's all, Brother - if you've ever been in love
That's all, Brother - you know what I'm speakin' of !

Comes a nightmare - you can always stay awake
Comes depression - you may get another break
Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !

Comes Love - Nothing Can Be Done !
Comes Lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove - Nothing Can Be Done !
Comes Love !

How I wish I had a video of a long ago PBS special in which Joni Mitchell sang this. Very special. It's a great tune, with lots of space to move around in.

Joni Mitchell recorded "Comes Love" on the album, "Both Sides Now", a collaborative project with the orchestrator Nelson Riddle. It's a pastiche album, unlike any other she's done. Her now smoky voice perfectly complements Riddle's sophisticated soft jazz arrangements. Not a bad track on it.

I thought this song might have its own thread already,
and I was right.

It also has a Wikipedia article, which specifies that
the songwriters cited in an earlier post on this thread -
Composer Stept and lyricists Brown and Tobias --

put this song in a 1939 Broadway piece that nobody ever heard of.
But you have heard of the performers who were cast in the show:
Judy Canova, Buddy Ebsen, Phil Silvers.

I know that I have heard the Rosemary Clooney recording somewhere,
probably over the speakers
in an Italian-American pizzeria.

This is a quirky, clever sort of lyric I'd expect from the likes of Lorenz Hart or Cole Porter, but 'tweren't neither one of them. Sure is a great song, though.

So, I just tried looking up Lew Brown, and, my goodness.

His family was Jewish-Ukrainian and he was born in Odessa.
He was a five-year-old when the family fled to the United States in 1898.
His given name was more like Lewis Brownstein.

Besides the musical that contained "Comes Love,"
he has lyric credits for:

"The Birth of the Blues"
"It All Depends on You"
"The Best Things in Life are Free"
"Button Up Your Overcoat"
"You're the Cream in my Coffee"
"Sonny Boy"
"Sunny Side Up"
"Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries"
"That Old Feeling"
"Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree"

. . . and, for what it's worth,
one of his daughters married Gerry Mulligan.

Yes, in the Comes Love lyric,
I especially fancy:

Comes a headache,
you can lose it in a day;
Comes a toothache,
See your dentist right away;
Comes LOVE      ... etc.
