Her parents evacuated in time, but she had to call FEMA because her dad believes there are people trapped in the windowless attic of his church. Their house is in the bottom right of this photo. As I watched the picture download on my slow dial-up connection, it gave the sense of the camera scanning mile after mile of devestation. That brought home to me the scale of the disaster (We don't have TV so all my information has been printed, internet or radio.) Knowing intellectually what is happening is one thing--the emotional understanding from the visual information is quite another. Janie |

I have a TV but I haven't turned it on since the debates before last year's Presidential election. I may not turn it on for another three years. However, there are TV monitors in the gym where I work out, including several in the women's locker room. Last night I saw CNN's coverage of Katrina, and it really was worth way more than 1000 words. I have heard about spectacular rescues by the military, but actually seeing this had tremendous impact. A man hanging from a rope or cable trailing from a Coast Guard helicopter plucked another man from a roof and the two of them were carried off way above the floodwaters. I think that if I had been the person being rescued I might have been too scared or too weak to hang on to the rescuer. |

It was way, way more dramatic seen in motion, with the gusting wind and billowing sheets of rain over the cityscape turned seascape. BTW, the American Red Cross is calling for donations of blood and money. The city is devastated. |
