If I weren't going to the Getaway I would offer to give LTS a break, but as I won't be back till the 16th November, I'm afraid I can't.
BTW next year I fancy running a Mudcat Scottish meet in the highlands, in Octoberish, any thoughts on this idea would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, is this too soon? :)   It was brought up in another thread and suggested that we should start a brand spankin new one...so here it is! Does LTS want a break? If so I would consider it. It might not be too bad being in the know.

Sadly I won't be at the getaway. Maybe one of these days I'll actually get to meet some of you...in person!

Sounds good Frank, I'm sure Liz would appreciate ahand if not a break, I haven't spoken to her about it yet though, so best to wait and see.

Regarding the timing of a Mudcat Highland Gathering, there is so much on in the UK all summer that I thought of October first as the festivals die down by then, although I too would prefer it to be September, but that's why I put it up for discussion so early.

With the amount of time it takes packages to travel, getting started early is a good idea. We've seen packages take four and six weeks (and more) to travel between continents.

Isn't it nice to consider the prospect of cool weather and fall preparations for the holiday season? It's about 98 right now here in Texas. I am heartily tired of this heat. (Yeah, I know, some Mudcatters get their holiday in the smack of the hot season. That makes a white xmas a real weather challenge, though I have friends who were hiking and camping in Tasmania one year in the 1970s who were snowed on on christmas day!)

As far as a Highland meet goes...epn and I are both all in favour of that. October is good because it's when festivals are dwindling and we have the prospect of a couple of months with nothing to go to. Can you make it lateish though so as not to clash with Banbury and the Donisthorpe Music Weekend which we are hoping to revive? Perhaps this needs it's own thread?

Anyone can play, they just meed to be willing to post a small gift to someone in a strange place. Gifts can be up to the value of about $15 or £10, or more or less, depending on your own personal circumstances. Homemade or local crafts and gifts are always welcomed.

Send me a Personal Message with your postal details on and I will match you up with someone in a far flung place. It will then be your responsibility to get something for that person and send it off. In return, your details get passed to another person who will send you a gift.

Here are a few threads from last year to give you an idea of what to expect. And now is a good time to become acquainted with the Logon/Logoff features in the upper right dropdown menu. You can come in and be the Secret Santa in a guest guise and toss hints in the direction of your intended.

You need to post something to this year's version of the hints thread. Secret Santa Hints 2004 is where last year people posted the particulars they wanted their potential Secret Santas to be aware of. We tend to discuss Santas (those giving) and Santees (those receiving).

This thread is called BS: SECSY Silly Secret Santa/Santee Hints and was started by me last year to get the ball rolling. I came in as a guest, as did many of the others.

After Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath this week, and the repercussions that are already reverberating through the US, the lyrics of the old song are truer than ever: "We need a little Christmas now!"

Heck, by Christmas I could send $15 worth of gasoline in a thimble, and it wouldn't cost much postage at all! (...well, it all depends on the weight of the thimble...)

At times of extreme crisis and stress, pleasant diversions are not only welcome, they are necessary.

Many of us will contract our lives and activities to respond to shortages, and we will also be working to contribute to or help out at agencies helping hurricane victims unknown to us. In the midst of this, selecting a small thoughtful gift to surprise a fellow Mudcatter is indeed a pleasant diversion.

I will also be finding a few new toys now to have ready for the Cowboy Santa program that the City of Fort Worth Parks and Community Services Department runs every year. I worked there for several years in the last 1990s, but I'll be back this year, because it is certain that there will be hundreds of extra children needing a little christmas.

Thanks, Liz, for organizing this again. I just wanted you to know how welcome this is in the midst of everything else that is going on right now.

Bugger. I should have posted this link to the 2005 hints thread here instead of in the confusing elf-name thread that looks like it is the Secret Santa thread.

I posted a link to last year's thread a couple of days ago. Take pity on your potential Secret Santa and go back and dig out your information, update it, and post it on the new hints thread so they don't have to go looking all over for it. "Last year's the same" isn't as helpful as going the extra distance (thus making sure your Santa knows exactly what you do--or don't--want.)

Retail establishments always get way ahead of us with their advertising and displays. Back in the early 1990s I used to enjoy taking my small daughter to the local expensive department store right after Labor Day. They had a very small room set up with exquisite ornaments. I asked about that, why so early, and was told that a lot of the people who bought stuff this early were mailing, and others were professional designers who where planning their annual displays. By now, with everything on the Internet, I'm sure that has changed, but out of curiosity I think I'll head over and see if they have anything set up in anticipation of the season.

Holiday decorating is going to be a challenge this year--we now have a dog. A great big puppy who chews everything. When I was a kid we had a German Shorthair Pointer who used to eat the bottom ornaments off of the tree (so we made sure they were all plastic, not glass). In this house we make sure they're plastic so the cats don't swat them off and break them. Something tells me this year we'd do well to suspend the tree from the ceiling. :)

Looking forward to exploring these possibilities in the Mudcat Tavern later in the year.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of other Secret Santa threads to check out: As soon as people receive the name of the party to whom they will send a gift (hereafter called "Santee") and have their gifts selected and in the mail, the temptation to tease that party with hints is overwhelming. So a thread like SECSY Silly Secret Santa/Santee Hints (2004) comes into existence. As boxes arrived people posted to My Secret Santa present has arrived! (2004)

Liz, perhaps (wonderful person that you are) you could send a brief response to our PMs...on the order of "you're in", maybe...so we know you got them. The way Mudcat is sometimes, you can't be sure a sent message actually went anywhere except into the ether.

Subject: RE: BS: The Official 2005 Secret Santa thread

I will look through them when I can.... thanks for the heads up, I wasn't aware that not all PMs were getting through.

SRS - one year, being short of money, I got all my decorations from the hedgerows. Someone had cut down a blackthorn tree nearby so I culled some branches from there, sprayed them silver and suspended them horizontally from the ceiling. Onto these I hung silver foil strips (lamenetta) and silvered pine cones. It all looked very effective and Christmassy. Total cost to me was £2.00 for the silver spray and 45p for the reel of invisible thread.

The whole effect was improved whenever the chap upstairs walked across his floor because the vibrations caused them to shimmer beautifully.

A pub I know has white sprayed beech branches that they staple to the ceiling and smother in plain white little lights - stunning effect against the black ceiling beams.

We had backups for those whose boxes didn't arrive, so don't be alarmed by the prospect of anticipation and not getting to the end of it! We take care of our own!

I'm not too late, am I? I sent my PM to the Secsy... already thinking of things I could put in my care package to whomever I get...

There are a few days left to get into this if you still want to... so far 63 of you have signed up and one wants to but didn't send me their details Robbie Wilson!!!

Last day for this is Sept 25th. Any PMs sent after that stand only a slim chance of inclusion and I will not go trawling the threads to pick up stragglers as I did last year!

Moonglow again has expressed interest. I'll have her post her details soon. And I'll have her send her own PM so it makes it easier on SECSY Liz.

I'm looking forward to this--it's a very pleasant distraction from what is shaping up to be a really strange autumn.
