And if I were a PR person for Pepsi, Coke, veggi burgers etc..I would have been down there so fast and made a commercial..not to exploit the suffering but to relieve it...think how good a cold coke or dr. pepper would be after days in the sun..think of if the Oscar Meyer wEINER Truck or Ronald McDonald showed up near a shelter somewhere...these companies could do this tastefully and in a helpful and non-exploitive way but I in my limited watching of the news about this don't believe i have seen anything....and I don't begrudge them ultimately making a profit either ..not from the victims but the rest of us who appreciate their efforts... mg |

His words were to the effect that that they got all their people out of New Orleans, and mostly down to Avery Island. He guessed they would take a hit on the HQ building in New Orleans, but didn't seem too concerned about it. He talked about making alternative shipping arrangements for theire products, from N.O. to Savanna, Houston and the west coast. The overall sense of the bit was tending first to the company's extented and expanded family, and then to business. Sort of refreshing, really, in the midst of all the emotional hyperbole most of the media seems to be engaged in. |

Why hurricane-prone areas specifically? Well, after ya get smacked by a hurricane and there's no electricity for cooking, FEMA sends in truckloads of military rations known as MREs (Meals, Ready-to-Eat). Included in most MRE packages is a little 1/8 ounce bottle of Tabasco sauce. The Tabasco is absolutely essential to make the rest of the stuff in the MRE package palatable. You can even eat the toilet paper included in the MRE if you just have enough Tabasco sauce. By the way, after first becoming an MRE recipient after Hurricane Ivan last year, I was wondering why Tabasco would opt for actual glass bottles for packaging just 1/8 ounce of their product instead of using much less expensive plastic pouches. The I realized that the bottle allows a soldier (and the vast majority of MREs are consumed by military personnel, not disaster victims) to carry the unused portion around in one of his many pockets. That way he doesn't just use their product and toss the package but always has the product on his person. Gotta be some marketing advantages there. |

Not having such delights in our country, I suspect that the miniatures resemble the full size ones - thus a good marketing ploy. I love miniature bottles. |

Years ago we heard about the bamboo growing on Avery Island, and asked where we could get some (a form of, p. vivax). They kindly sent us a rhizome. We lived in a sandy beach area then, and within a couple of years had a whole bamboo grove beside our house. I've never forgotten their kindness and informal friendliness. Very glad to hear Avery Island still there. |

McIlhenny retired as a Brigadier General in the Marine Corps, after enlisting in the Marines after a previous tour in the Army National Guard - Territorial to the British members - and served on the invasion of most of the Pacific islands from 1942 until 1945. Upon his discharge from the Virginia National Guard, he entered the Corps and was promoted to the grade of Second Lieutenant. He saw action during all of the Island Campaign in the Pacific, and returned from the war in 1945 as a Major. Upon his retirement from the Marines in 1969,he was retired as a Brigadier General, because of his combat service during the Pacific war. On his death, in 1985, part of his will left a large bequest to the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, a private military college preparatory boarding school for boys in grades 8 through 12, which he helped to found in the early 60's. Additionally his company's Tobasco Sauce has been donated to the military for inclusion in military rations since our hostilities in Kopea snd subsequent times of war. Dave WALTER S.
