If I like a writer, I will usually learn a ton of their songs. By that criteria, in order of discovery, there is Loudon Wainwright III (first five albums or so), John Prine (before his drinking got bad and after he got sober), and Joel Mabus. James Keelaghan and Lennie Gallant are fine current Canadian writers, and Murray McLauchlan has turned out an impressive body of work over the years. I think fewer women come immediately to my mind because, to generalize horribly, not as many of them write in the traditional folk idiom that interests me. Marychapin Carpenter is quite wonderful, so I think is Cheryl Wheeler, and Laura Smith. Bill |

Bruce Cockburn has produced a staggering number of great songs. He is still going strong. I think it would be difficult to dispute that BC is in the midst of one of the greatest singer/songwriter careers in the folk/rock genre. Time will tell. This statement is not intended to take anything from all the other great songwriters, past and present. I just don't think that BC has received the credit he has earned, and his career is still developing. Be well, JK |

Forgot to mention: Mike Cross Tommy Thompson Tom "Harley" Campbell But I have to say that if the measure of an artist's worth is the number of other people who record their songs, I'd have to believe that the greatest _living_ _folk_ artist (leaving out such as the Beatles and Dylan) is Bruce "Utah" Phillips. By my count, he has over twenty of his songs recorded by other people, right up there with Woody Guthrie, and Malvina Reynolds. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, and Al Stewart. Joni Mitchell is pretty great, but not exactly on my wavelength, I suppose. Loreena McKennitt and Enya are superb at what they do. Van Morrison has done some great stuff. Tanita Tikaram wrote a bunch of songs that don't sound like anyone but her. I still can't figure out how she came up with those lyrics. That should do for now. - LH |
