06 Sep 05 - 07:53 AM (#1557379) Subject: RE: Wanted : Fylde Bazouki From: Grab Amazing - I was about to say the same! ;-) Paul Hathway's website is here. Or another alternative (which I played and enjoyed very much at Whitby) are Oakwood Instruments. FWIW, I've not played a Fylde bouzouki, but I've tried their tenor and octave mandolas, and I wasn't as impressed as I was with the Hathway and Oakwood ones. Graham. |

06 Sep 05 - 09:07 AM (#1557433) Subject: RE: Wanted : Fylde Bazouki From: mooman It's a matter of personal taste and preference I suppose. I used to own a Hathway OM and, earlier, an Oakwood (and several other makes as well, e.g. John Le Voi) and prefer the Fylde to both the Hathway and the Oakwood both for aesthetics and sound. That is not to say in the slightest that the latter two are in any way anything other than excellent instruments. But the best bouzouki I owned was an old John Roberts. My line-up, for what it's worth, is now a Terry Docherty octave mandolin, and Gideon Weigert mandolin and mandola. Peace moo |

07 Sep 05 - 11:43 AM (#1558548) Subject: RE: Wanted : Fylde Bazouki From: GUEST,Jim Grab (Graham) - so glad you found your perfect octave mandolin. A couple of years ago I intended buying a Fylde from Music Room (Cleckheaton) but was much more impressed with the Paul Hathway. I note "MandoTim" also recommended the Hathway when you were looking to buy and he seems to know his stuff. Enjoy.... At Whitby this year the guy on Music Room's stand tried to get me interested in a Paul Shippey octave mandolin at around £1000! Nice one.. (PS - were you on the Glaisdale trip?) |

07 Sep 05 - 12:49 PM (#1558591) Subject: RE: Wanted : Fylde Bazouki From: Grab Sadly not - I was doing something else that day. I was at the Mudcat gathering in the Board Inn though. As Moo says, they're all good instruments. I wish I could afford to buy instruments like you do, Moo! ;-) I tried both shapes of Oakwood ones, the "regular" octave mandolin size and the "jumbo" size with a wider, deeper body. Again, it's all personal preference, but I wasn't as impressed with the wide-body ones. They certainly bring out the low notes much more strongly, but I didn't feel they were as well balanced. You got the low notes very strongly, but then the mid-range dropped out and went a bit muddy, before the "tinklyness" inherrent in mandolins brought up the high notes. And they were around £400 more expensive as well! However, if you're doing chords (which you probably will be on bouzouki) then the "kick-in-the-pants" from the bass might be what you want. I believe Fylde do similar shapes as well, although Hathway only does the "regular" smaller body. Suck one and see... Graham. |

08 Sep 05 - 04:41 AM (#1558828) Subject: RE: Wanted : Fylde Bazouki From: mooman It's becoming more difficult now Graham because of The Boss's close scrutiny of such matters! From a high of about 30 instruments I've now traded my way down to the three mentioned, plus two guitars and a flute. But they're all good ones and used every day so I can't complain! Peace moo |
