How Old is a Mudcatter?

06 Jan 99 - 06:33 PM (#52336)
Subject: How Old is a Mudcatter?
From: Ralph Butts

Curiosity is getting the best of me.

Past postings suggest that the average Mudcatter, if not long in the tooth, is at least, well, MATURE.

How about posting your sex and age (anonymous, of course) so we can get an idea. Just put it into the "From:" section of the Reply area, for example:

M 40 (which would denote a 40 year old man)

Leave the message area blank to keep the thread size small, unless you care to leave a snide remark.

I'll give myself away by making the first post to show you the format, but afterwards, please be anonymous. Should be interesting.

Isn't that the "backside of 40"? I'm with Big Mick Lane. I am really enjoying my forties and damn proud of who I've become. BTW, I coined a new term a few years back: I call it "center age" - gets rid of all those nasty connotations of "middle age" (mmm...as in pre-Renaissance?)- and, personally, I think it denotes that well-rounded, balanced (well, hopefully) level of experience we baby crones and wizards have come to!

The only problem I have is with society and conventional doctors who have such set ideas and expectations of what our bodies and we are supposed to be doing at a certain age! When THEY ask for my age on a form, I usually write in "adult" or "all grown-up" or "old enough"!

Out of the ag(e)ist closet, I am

and any Mudcatter who can get to Wash DC, USA is invited to drop by my once every 5 years Birthday party!..at the ages of 50 & 55, the highlight (other than the food & music)was that I stood on my head while the assemblege recited "You are old, Father William"..I COULD still do it, but there is this disc in the neck,*sigh*...wife & doctor say don't

More info on the party later...perhaps I'll just have computer connections open all day (ICQ, IRC...ect.)so even those who can't be here in the flesh can post songs they WOULD have sung... and generally cavort as usual..*grin*

Total responses excluding comments etc = 64, 48 M 16F
Max 70, Min 19, Mean 46.9 Std Dev 10.5, Mode = 47

M only : n=48, x=48.5 s=10.7, bimodal at 47 and 50

No surprises there given the responses to the "Where in the world.." thread.

19-29 4 1
30-39 4 4
40-49 16 8
50-59 22 4
60-70 6 0

Two sons, ages 22 and allmost 18. They are both interested in "pop" music, the younger one likes Jewel and Fiona Appel, and the Wallflowers. The older one likes Radiohead and Morphine. The older also searches out local independent bands that he likes. Except for some Techno-head (or whatever) music the younger likes, most of what they listen to is musical to my ears, if not to my tastes. The older son has some interest in electric blues so he received Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and and John Hooker for Christmas from his Dad.

No folk music is slipped in except they both have a garage tape of their Dad's music (happily, they requested it).

My far-too-smart,20 year-old daughter, who lives with me, assures me that I am 52. I was betting on 53...

I know which one I'm chasing. At 48 tomorrow, I feel like I am finally mature enough for a spritely 33 year old. But if she is going to act her age, I will look elsewhere. LOL.

I have three

My 12 year-old listens to the Spice Girls and Jewel. She says thanks when I give her Nanci Griffith and Waterson and McGarrigal and Pogues disks and then never plays them (so I take them back and play them myself).

My 10 year-old ignores all music as far as I can tell.

My 8-old listens to Beethoven and Carmen.

Dunno about that Sandy, but if you set up the "Mother Knows Best" filters (aka "Content advisor" in IE) it wont let you access the forum - unsuitable language!! Is it something to do with the 60s Folk Boom?

as there is a glut of 'young' 40-60 age group.

We have been trying to introduce more young people to the Traditional scene though folk clubs and Festivals. The Young Generation Contest at the Fyle Folk Festival has done well over the years several professional performers have come out of the Competition (eg. Kate Rusby).

Lets all stay young forever.

I've always looked younger than my years (as did my parents.. youthful genes) so I have never thought of myself as 'old'. I was stunned (or stung) about 2 years ago when I was talking to a guy after the session was breaking up and he complemented me on my singing. He then went on to say, 'and it's nice that older people like you can pass on the songs to the young people...' ... and I had been thinking of him as a peer while I was talking to him... I could have popped him in the nose, as my daddy would say, but I'm a lady. I stood there speechless, instead, as my face blanched then blushed.

F62, every year gets better (mostly). (Using WebTV, can't access/modify the "From" line.) Only 2 yrs. to "When I'm 64," provided we all survive y2k.

Alice in Montana (Jan. 17 posting): I had a corresponding experience over 5 yrs. ago at a Dawn Dance (all-nite contra-dancing), when a (beautiful) young chick, age 20, came up to me ca. 4:30 a.m. and said admiringly, "I just love watching you dance, you're so graceful and energetic at the same time." Ooh, such a compliment! I was about to express my pleasure at hearing it (and compliment her in turn on her perspicacity) when she went on, "You remind me of my grandmother!" Ooh, such...uh.... So taken aback (knocked off my pins, us oldsters might say), all I could think of to reply was that I remind me of _my_ grandmother too. (Which is true, but I was startled to think it showed from the outside. I'm beginning to get used to that part now, even tho I don't believe it except when I look in a mirror sometimes.)

How young do you feel. An interesting experiment would be to take about 50 pictures of people of different ages and ask someone to pick out three that are closest to their age. I wonder if I would pick out three people in their 30's or in ther 50's?

I still feel like a kid, even though I'm supposed to be an adult. Those people are 21 years old, I'm 21 years young.

M 76 and a bit taken aback to discover that I am the last living human being to know a song my daddy taught me on a fishing trip to Florida in about 1940.

I asked Mudcatters for help with a a couple of lines that are in doubt and no one had ever heard of the song.

But you people are fantastic ... that seems to be the ONLY song you can't manage to recapture.

M54. I look in the mirror sometimes and see this grey bearded face staring back, and sometimes think that it couldn't be me - I am still young! Even my grandkids say so!

I suppose all the 50+ folkies are left over from the 60's folk boom. When the next folk boom happens we may not even recognise it, I suppose it will be very different.

PS. The reason I have a beard is because I don't like looking at my face in the mirror - particularly in the morning - yuck! - but most times. Not shaving saves a lot of soul searching.

had to look at this--'cause i responded to it last year as i was staying at my dad's house for the night and he showed me mudcat...unfortunately i didn't have a computer between then and now and i thought it was crazy that now that i visit almost everyday, it came back again---good memories!!!

but here's a funny little birthday story --- when i turned 20,every member of my family sent me a card saying happy 21st (including my mother)....that night , i was playing out a bar that i play regularly and i had told my older brother that i was playing out at this bar, so he sent a letter to the bar telling them that it was my 21st and with $$ for a few drinks. so when the owners came out with a cake and asked me what i wanted my first legal drink to be... i could not tell a lie :) i had to tell everyone that it was really my 20th b-day...and everyone in the place passed around the cards that my whole familiy had sent me with the wrong age and we laughed.

(you'd think after 20 years they'd figure it out)

OK, I have faced up to doing the stats. First of all, I have only included those who posted this year as I can't be sure how many of the previous Mudcatter's are still here. This may leave out a lot of people who didn't bother reposting.

These are the previously reported figures:

Average Mudcat age is 46.4 years, M = 47.3, F = 44.3.

Age Range is 15 - 74, M = 19 - 74, F = 15 - 63

Modal range is M = 45 - 49, F = 50 - 54

And the new figures:

Average Mudcat Age is 46.23, M= 51.5, F=35.2

Age Range is 17-74, M=26-74, F=17-60

Modal Range is M = 53, F= 40

It is based on a much smaller sample of 21 M and 10 F

It is interesting that the mean age hasn't changed, so Mudcat isn't just the same old faces getting older!

26 May 02 - 11:45 AM (#717559)
Subject: RE: How Old is a Mudcatter?
From: CapriUni

Also interesting that the ratio between M's and F's hasn't changed all that much (about a third of us are female... Back on May 9, 1999, there were 90 M's and 41 F's responding -- also about a third).

Though internet wide, the online population is creeping closer to 50/50 (though we're not quite there yet). So, does that mean that the field of trad/roots music is male dominated in general?

...Or just that guys are more interested in answering surveys and breaking things down into demographics? ;-)

I'm here to revive an 11 year old thread!
M 21
folk music enthusiast from NW coast of America

I'm finding it very interesting, scrolling through this thread--besides confirming my suspicion that not many of us young'ns find their way here--to think about what age the posters are *now*.

Everybody, you've aged 14 years! Or 11, if you were one of the '02 posters...

The other day I wondered what happened between age 68 and now? 68 sounds pretty old to me- 78 is fairly spry.

I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

F 68. Am I the oldest female on Mudcat? I certainly don't feel that old! Folk music is rejuvenating!

I get the impression is that the average age of Mudcatters is getting higher at close to real time: while there certainly are young mudcatters most posters seem to have been here at least as long as I have

Seems to me that our resident statistician decided some time ago that our average age was 59. If that is still the case I am about 8 above average. Being above average is new and quite foreign to me.

And Allan, you're above average in several ways that I can think of!

Was just looking at some pics of your visit on the First Great Mudcat Adventure.
