Grabbed him by the

I'm curious about the origin of this song. I know it goes back to recordings done in the 20's as "My Lulu."

Anyone have any versions?

Also it seems this song may be related to "Shout Lula/ Shake Lulu" banjo songs.

Anyone see the connection?

My Lulu
From Carl Sandburg, The American Songbag, pp. 378-379. No source
indicated, though Sandburg implies that the verses are only a selection of those known to him.

1 My Lulu hugged and kissed me,
    She wrung my hand and cried,
She said I was the sweetest thing
    That ever lived or died.

2 My Lulu's tall and slender,
    My Lulu gal's tall and slim,
But the only thing that satisfies her
    Is a good big drink of gin.

3 If you go monkey with my Lulu gal,
    I'll tell you what I'll do,
I'll carve your heart out with my razor,
    I'll shoot you with my pistol too.

4 My Lulu gal's a daisy,
    She wears a big white hat;
I bet your life when I'm in town
    The dudes all hit the flat.

5 I ain't goin' to work on the railroad,
    I ain't goin' to lie in jail,
But I'm goin' down to Cheyenne town
    To live with my Lulu gal.

6 My Lulu she's an angel,
    Only she aint (sic.) got no wings.
I guess I'll get her a wedding ring
    When the grass gets green next spring.

7 My Lulu, she's a dandy,
    She stands and drinks like a man,
She calls for gin and brandy,
    And she doesn't give a damn.

8 Engineer blowed the whistle,
    Fireman rang the bell,
Lulu, in a pink kimona
    Says, "Baby, oh fare you well."

9 I seen my Lulu in the springtime,
    I seen her in the fall;
She wrote me a letter in the winter time,
    Says, "Good-bye, honey," that's all.

Richie, with regard to the first verse that you quoted from Carl Sandburg, The American Songbag:

My Lulu hugged and kissed me,
She wrung my hand and cried,
She said I was the sweetest thing
That ever lived or died.

-snip-
This is the first verse of this song that is included in Thomas W. Talley's 1922 "Negro Folk Rhymes" {Kennikat Edition Press, 1968; p. 131}:

SHE HUGGED ME AND SHE KISSED ME

I see'd her in de Springtime,
I see's her in de Fall.
I see'd her in de Cotton patch,
A cameing from the Ball.

She hug me, as' she kissed me,
She wrung my han' an' cried.
She said I wus de sweetes/ thin
Dat ever lived or died.

She hug me an' she kiss me.
Ih Heaben! De touch o' her han'!
She said I wus de puttiest thing
In de shape o' mortal man.

I told her dat I love her,
Dat my love wus bed-cord strong;
Den I axed her w'en she'd have me.
An' she jes say "Go Long!"

Regarding the lines you quoted, these are a standard part of the children's {usually handclap rhyme} "Miss Suzie" {or "Miss Lucy", or "Miss Molly"} Had A Steamboat {tugboat}". Like many children's recreational rhymes, "Miss Suzie" is composed by stringing together a number of different versions, some of which can be found in other rhymes, or recited independently. Several lines found in "Miss Suzie Had A Steamboat" children rhymes will be familiar to those folks who know the "Bang Bang Rosie" adult rhymes.

The schoolyard games thread at http://blog.oftheoctopuses.com/000518.php has a number of examples of this rhyme.

Here's one example from that thread:

miss suzie had a steamboat the steamboat had a bell ding ding miss suzie went to heaven the steamboat went to hello operator please give me number 9 and if you disconnect me ill kick you from behind the fridgerator there was a piece of glass miss suzie sat upon it and broke her little ask me no more questions tell me no more lies the boys are in the bathroom zipping up their flies are in the meadow the bees are in the park miss suzie and her boyfriend are kissing in the D-A-R-K D-A-R-K DARK DARK DARK DARK the dark is like the movies the movies' like the show the show is like a tv set and that is all i know i know i know my ma, i know i know my pa i know i know my sister with the 40 acre bra bras come from feathers feathers come from birds birds come from eggs and that is all i heard i heard my sister kissing in her room the person she was kissing was someone else's groom my mom gave me a nickel my pa gave me a dime my sister gave me a boyfriend who kissed me all the time he kissed me over london he kissed france he kissed me over disneyland without his underpants my ma took back the nickel my pa took back the dime my sister took the boyfriend and gave me frankenstein he made me do the dishes he made me wash the floors he made me wash his underwear so i kicked him out the door i kicked him over london i kicked him iver france i kicked him over disneyland without his underpants! Correction:

Like many children's recreational rhymes, "Miss Suzy" is composed by stringing together a number of different verses.

And to make up for my mistake, here's another made-up rhyme from the "Miss Suzy Had A Steamboat" family:

Miss Susie had a steamboat. The steamboat had a bell.
The steamboat went to heaven. Miss Susie went to ——.

Hello, operator. Give me number nine,
And if you disconnect me, I'll chop off your ——.

Behind the refrigerator, There was a piece of glass.
Miss Suzie sat upon it, and cut her little ——.

Ass-k me any question, I tell no lies.
The boys are in the girl's bathroom, Zipping down their ——.

Flies are in the city. Bees are in the park.
(Friend's name) and her (his) boy (girl) friend, Are kissing in the,
D-a-r-k, D-a-r-k, D-a-r-k, dark, dark, dark.

The dark is like the movies. The movies like the show.
The show is like the TV set, and that is all I know.

I know I know my ma. I know I know my pa.
I know I know my sister with the forty-acre bra.

My mother is Godzilla. My father is King Kong.
My brother is the stupid one who taught me this song.

My mother gave me a nickel. My father gave me a dime.
My sister gave me her old boyfriend. His name was Frankenstein.

He made me do the dishes. He made me wash the floors.
He made me clean his underwear, so I kicked him out the door.

I kicked him over London. I kicked him over France.
I kicked him over Hawaii where he learned the hula dance.

He swam across the ocean. He swam across the sea.
He swam across the tub just to get to me.

I flushed him down the tub. I drained the water good.
I kicked him out just like my mama said I should.

In Hawaii, he met the good girls. In Hawaii, he met the bad.
Halfway through Hawaii he ran into my dad.

The good girls go to heaven, So the bad girls go to ——.
Hello, operator. Give me number ten,
And if you disconnect me, I'll sing this song again!

me and my sis Hollie spotted this thread and the songs reminded us of the old school playground songs we sang while clapping our hands in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways... i think this one may have come from the miss suzie family...

my boyfriend gave me an apple,
my boyfriend gave me a pear,
my boyfriend gave me a kiss on the lips,
and threw me down the stairs stairs stairs.

i gave him back his apple,
i gave him back his pear,
i gave him back his kiss on the lips,
and threw him down the stairs stairs stairs.

i made him wash the dishes,
i made him wash the floor,
i made him wash the babies bum in 1984.

i threw him over England,
i threw him over Wales,
i threw him over the USA,
and he ended up in jail.

in jail they give you coffee,
in jail they give you tea,
in jail they give you everything,
except the blooming key!!

charming im sure you'll agree. hehe :o) xxx

Guy Logsden records about a dozen verses, in The Whorehouse Bells Were Ringing: and other songs cowboys sing, for "My Lulu Gal." Alternate titles noted include "Lula," "My Lulu," "Bang Away, My Lulu," Bang, Bang Lulu," "She Is a Lulu," "and many more."

Collection notes indicate the first printed reference to "Lulu" in cowboy song is from 1902, when Owen Wister has the hero in The Virginian sing one verse. The verse used is commonly known, but Wister stated "that the other 78 verses were unprintable."

Logsdon also relates that "Lulu/Lula" was immensely popular with the military personnel of many nations during the WWI era, and that Anthony Hopkins in Songs From the Front and Rear (1979) and C.W. "Bill" Getz in The Wild Blue Yonder (1986) include "the uncensored Lula known and loved by servicemen."

Logsden relates several verses to "The Darby Ram," and sees a relationship to "Ten Broeck and Mollie" (1878?) He sees at least one verse as derivative from "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms."

He also comments that the "Lula or Lulu" that appeared in John Lomax's 1935 edition Cowboy Songs and Other Country Ballads turned Lula into something entirely foreign to the character known to decades of military men (An accusation not otherwise foreign to Lomax's collections.)

Logsdon suggests that "Gershon Legman probably found more versions than anyone else," but as Legman is now deceased with publishers still refusing his works it's unlikely that his collection will appear.

Logsden reports that Cray also included "a greater diversity of travel and song lineages than I have shown" in The Erotic Muse, but they may have been omitted from the second edition that I have, as they're not in my "index of holdings."

The older versions apparently appeared as "straight songs," and the popular "jump to chorus" in place of the implied "bad word" is a more recent folk (children's) variation(?). Verses given by Logsdon are "rather plain vanilla" and probably are not quite what's wanted here.

Two versions of this song exist that I didn't see mentioned, one by Oscar Brand, "Bang Away, Lulu, Bang It Good and Strong, What in the Hell Will the Navy Do When Good Old Lulu's Gone", which was a cut in Brand's LP album Bawdy Sea Chanteys, circa 1957 and, believe it or not, a version from 1936, entitled "Bang, Bang, My Lulu, by of all people, ROY ACUFF, who portrayed himself as being a REALLY clean-cut individual. I wonder if he would have become known as the King of Country Music and such an influential person on the Grand Ol' Opry had that song been widely heard.

Earlier in this discussion Sorcha provided a link to a Google Question & Answer thread. That thread included examples of "Bang Bang Lulu" and other rhymes. As a result of that discussion, I looked for and found several threads about several of those rhymes that have the title "More Work For The Undertaker". And the more I read examples of those rhymes, the more I think that some of their verses of this rhyme are related to "Bang Bang Lulu". I also believe that more directly through the "Bang Bang Lulu" rhyme, versions of "More Work For The Undertaker" are related to at least two children's playground rhymes- "Miss Susie Had A Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy Had A Baby".

I posted the examples from that discussion of "More Work For The Undertaker" on this Mudcat thread:

I hope that some folks reading this "Bang Bang Lulu" thread will also read that "More Work For The Undertaker" thread and see what you think about the similarities between those two rhymes,as well as the similarities between "More Work For The Undertaker {MWFTU} and the "Miss Susie/Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy/Baby" rhymes.

In my next post to this thread I'll posts a few verses that seem to me to show a common source between "More Work For The Undertaker {MWFTU} and the "Miss Susie/Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy/Baby" rhymes.
I think that source began with either "MWFTU" and/or "My Lulu Gal" {or some such older version of "Bang Bang Lulu"} and then later became core parts of the "Miss Susie/Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy/Baby" and probably several other contemporary children's handclap or skipping {jump rope} rhymes.

I think that the fact that people so often provide examples of "Miss Susie Had A Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy Had A Baby" during discussions about "Bang Bang Lulu {Rosie}" is proof that these three rhymes are clearly related. As I've noted before, "Miss Susie/Steamboat" and "Miss Lucy/Baby" come from "Bang Bang Lulu" and not the other way around.

Although I'm aware that the subject of this thread is "Bang Bang Lulu {Rosie}", I'd like to take a bit more time to showcase a few connections between between "Bang Bang Lulu", "Miss Susie Had A Steamboat", "Miss Lucy Had A Baby" and/or "More Work For The Undertaker" {MWFTU}.

Let me first say that the versions of MWFTU that I've read don't appear to be sexually risque like most "Bang Bang Lulu" rhymes are, and like "Miss Susie/Steamboat" rhymes are to much lesser extent. Also, the "More Work For The Undertaker" examples that I've read don't have the pattern of leaving off a risque word and going to the chorus {as is the case in "Bang Bang Lulu"} or using the risque word in a socially acceptable way, and thus having plausible deniability that you didn' say a naughty word {as is the case with "Miss Susie Had A Steamboat" rhymes}.

That said, I'll post a few similarities in the lyrics of two or more of these rhymes: My comments are in italics.

A verse from a MWFTU rhyme refers to a bell and hell, as does all Miss Susie Steamboat rhymes

Sammy sat on the tramway line,
The driver rang his bell,
The tram went on to Hammersmith
And Sammy went to Hell.

I'd be about 5 at the time. He never said it in Mum's hearing, she'd have been cross. Back in the 50s the word "hell" was a bit rude for a child, so it was our own naughty joke, and I'd just collapse in giggles.
I can only assume it was from his own schooldays in Paddington around 1920

reference to lemonade and ginger drinks in MWFTU are similar to references to cocktail gingerale in some versions of Bang Bang Lulu {particularly the Sonny Jim/bathtub version that became "Miss Lucy Had A Baby" See Peace's version:

Lulu (Rosie) had a baby
His name was Sonny Jim
She put him in the bathtub

Compare that with this version of "More Work For The Undertaker"

One day he said to Sambo,
"I'll give you two and six."
Sambo feeling thirsty, went into a lemonade shop,
Bought ten lemonades and ten ginger beers
And Sambo went off pop.

Since this is Bang Bang Lulu's thread, let me note the connection between GUEST,Rosanne age19 Feb 07 - 09:00 AM verse about Rosie having a brother named Tiny Tim who almost drowned, and Miss Lucy who had a baby named Tiny Tim who also almost drowned {but, in this case, it was in the bathtub}

**
the reference in a MWFTU verse of the central character being pricked by a pin compared to the reference in all of the Miss Susie/Steamboat rhymes of the central character sitting on a piece of glass

Sambo had a sister, a sister very thin,
One day she said to Sambo,
"I'll prick you with a pin."
Sambo didn't like it, 'cause he was very fat,
And when she pricked him with a pin
He went off bang like that

This is just a brief look at the similarities between some of the verses of these rhymes.

I'd be interested in "hearing" whether you think that there is any connections between these rhymes.

I've heard of the "Diamond Dick" one, but not the others. I also heard, "Rosie had a chicken;
Rosie had a duck;
she put 'em on the table;
to see if they would--"

(chorus)

"Rosie had a bicycle;
the seat was made of glass;
When Rosie dared to sit on it;
it went right up her--"

(chorus)
