If you were to type streets of derry in the "Digitrad and Forum Search" page on the main Forum page, you would get a short list of links to previous discussions of this song.  One of them would be this:  RE: Tune Req: The Maid Freed From the Gallows  which has a long list of relevant links.  None of them include the full set of words used by the Bothy Band, though there is some discussion of those lines that Triona sang particularly indistinctly.  Some interesting background reading for you, at any rate, which may perhaps help you to work the lyrics out yourself.

Can anyone help me with the Lyrics to 'Streets of Derry' please. I think the version I'm looking for may have originally been sung by Andy Irvine.

Thanks..

I miss one or two words in the 7th stanza. Please, help me complete this text. Thank you. R

Streets of Derry
Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill with The Bothy Band, Out of the Wind into the Sun, Green Linnet GLCD 3013, 1985, originally released 1977.

My love is one of the fairest young men
That ever was in this country
But how to win him, I do not know it
For he is sentenced for to die

As he walked out the streets of Derry
He walked so proud and so manfully
He was far more like a commanding officer
Than a man to die on the gallow's tree

The first time he went to climb the ladder
His blooming face began to pale
And this he said - Is there no assistance?
Is there no release in the Derry jail?

He took another step up the ladder
His beloved father was standing by -
Come here, come near, my beloved father
And speak one word to me before I die

The next time he went to climb the ladder
His beloved sister was standing by -
Come here, come near, my beloved sister
And speak one word to me before I die

I wonder what become of my true love
Or what has sent her so long from me?
Or does she think it a great dishonour
For to see me die on a gallow's tree?

He looked around and he saw her coming
And she was dressed up in woolens fine
And then he stepped, and she draws nearer
Was swifter than the ...(?) wynd (?)

Come down, come down off that weary gallow
For I've got your pardon from the king
And I'll let them see we'll be united
And I'll crown my Johnny with a laurel leaf

Was swifter than the ... "wine": I think it should be "wind", pron. wynd. But I can't get the word before wind. R

it sounds to me as if she sings whirlwind, pronouncing wind as wynd, of course.

'Wind' pronounced to rhyme with 'kind' is correct, it is the old poetic form of 'wind'.

'Whirlwind' is a good fit. However, I hear 'furl wind' but cannot make sense of that.

Wolfgang in the north of Ireland the local dialect wouldn`t pronounce the D, so we would say,the wine is strong to-day, and that has nothing to do with Buckie, to get the gist Wolfgang, you would have to be a local.

Thanks, Ard Mhacha. Can you make sense of the syllable before win(e/d)? Could 'furl' possibly make sense or would it rather be 'whirl'?
