Way to go, Amos! We love you (well, most of us do...and those who don't...what can you do such as they?)

Shatner wants a rematch. Just thought I'd tell you that. He says he really won last time anyway (in the Steel Cage Match), so he's offering it out of his own generosity. I hope you appreciate that, I really do.

Shane says, "Flip ME! The guy is so flippin' OLD, man! He is WAY over the flippin' hill, eh?"

Yeah? What does he know, eh? He's in the slammer again.

Chongo says, "Make it a good one, buddy. Have a banana dacquiri on me, and chase it with a good whisky on the rocks. Don't let the dames turn your head around, and keep your gat well oiled and ready for action."

Well, candles have lots of uses you know. I once knew a lovely Moroccan housewife who was very pregant, her first, IIRC; and she kept a couple in her bedside table to nibble on because it seemed to fill a need, like pickles and ice cream is reputed to do for some gals during pregnancy.

One of the all time great inventions, the candle.

I'd wish him happy birthday but he didn't bake me a cake. Or even invite me. We could have played pin the tail on the donkey and drunk Kool-Aid and went on a scavenger hunt and eaten ice cream and cake 'til we puked, but I wasn't even invited.

So in a fit of depression I spent a day and a half in the environs of DC.

Let that be a lesson to ya.

I had a number of things to do today. I'm a busy man. Most of them were, relatively speaking, just a tad more important than posting on this forum. Just a tad! :-) But, hey, I'm a generous guy. I've had a lot of experience over the years with what it means to be...human. I know how much it means to some people just to get a little recognition, a little confirmation that they are not alone in a huge unfeeling universe, and that someone out there cares.

So...it is with at least a moderate level of enthusiasm that I take a couple of minutes out from my busy day here, Amos, to say....

Happy Birthday!!!

You lucky sod. I could just have ignored it entirely. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...

You are now only 365 days away from the next chance to have this happen. Cross your fingers, buddy, and hope for the best!

Your failure to fully appreciate the fine qualities of William Shatner is possibly the only really serious flaw in what is otherwise a sterling character, Amos. It's a shame, really. You fall just short of perfection.

Most people are quite unaware that William Shatner completely revolutionized the whole concept of acting way back in the 1950's when he did a series of brilliant roles in the movies and on TV, such as his appearance on Twilight Zone. It wasn't Brando who changed the movies forever, it was Shatner. Brando was a mere flicker of the blinding light that Shatner shone upon the world of film art.

I can easily say that had Shatner been alive in 1914, and been in charge of the Allied forces, World War One would have ended 2 years sooner! Millions of lives could have been saved. How? He would have sung to the troops, that's how. He would have led them by example to go where no man had gone before! He would have inspired feats of arms that even Alexander could never match. I kid you not.

Damn shame he was born too late, isn't it?

Bobert, great minds DO think alike. Another Virgo here, but I bypassed the opportunity of a thread by not mentioning the date when it happened. (There do seem to have been quite a few reporting in on this thread).

I didn't bake a cake, but I did to a search on Golden Globes. Mostly I found photos of the Beautiful People in Hollywood with their statuettes and fancy clothing. Not much except the one above to share with ol' Amos. (Now we both know there are many terms that one might enter into a search engine to get a higher percentage of the desired results, but if one plays the game by the unspoken rules, one settles for what one finds on the first search. Along the way I did find an interesting site about a Golden Girl--Doris Day).

Happy, Happy, Amos!

It'll be okay, Amos. Really. Being sixty isn't bad. I've been sixty since February and nothing important has fallen off or anything. I mean, the wrinkles aren't painful or anything, and you can get a lot of reading done during the extra time you'll be spending on the...well, you'll get a lot of reading done. Of course, you'll probably forget where you put your trifocals, but that's nothing because you'll also forget where you put your dentures and your cane, what your name is, where you live, and who that woman is who lives in your house. The extra sleep you get will almost compensate for the other things you used to do in the bed, only you won't remember what they were.

None of this has happened to me, but I hear a lot of talk.

On the other hand, is this to be our future? ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!

I'M FINE, THANK YOU
(Anon)

There is nothing the matter with me.
I'm as healthy as I can be.
I have arthritis in both my knees
And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze.

My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in.
Arch supports I have for my feet
Or I wouldn't be able to be on the street.

Sleep is denied me night after night,
But every morning I find I'm all right.
My memory is failing, my head's in a spin
But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in.

The moral is this, as my tale I unfold,
That for you and me who are growing old,
It's better to say "I'm fine" with a grin
Than to let folks know the shape we are in.

How do I know that my youth is all spent?
Well, my "get up and go" just got up and went.
But I really don't mind when I think with a grin
Of all the grand places my "get up" has been.

Old age is golden, I've heard it said;
But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed
With my ears in the drawer my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table until I wake up.

Ere sleep overtakes me, I say to myself,
"Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf?"
When I was young my slippers were red,
I could kick my heels over my head

When I was older my slippers were blue,
But I still could dance the whole night through.
Now I am old, my slippers are black,
I walk to the store and puff my way back.

I get up each morning and dust off my wits
And pick up the paper and read the obits.
If my name is still missing, I know I'm not dead
So I fix me some breakfast and go back to bed.

Happy birthday Amos, all the best.

Here's your presi; a do it yourself very small piece of brain.
If you build the circuit as drawn and feed current into the top rail through a 1M-Ohm variable-resistor (potentiometer) connected to the positive terminal of a 9V Battery grounded to the bottom rail you can listen to the oscillations through an amplifier connected across the Membrane capacitor. Lowering Cm moves the oscillations to a higher, more musically interesting frequency.

Many Happy Returns of the Day, pal.

Celebrate!

Have the missus kiss you for me. No, wait. I'll kiss her, then she can kiss you and...

On second thought, a kiss at your age is probably wasted, so I'll just kiss her, and to hell with you.

Cheers,

D

Hey, Amos! Get on a plane quick--you'll want to go to Hawaii to see this! That darned Gluon has been out there haring around and she ran into something. See if we need to go pick up anything, will you?

Hawaii Telescopes Record Cosmic Explosion
September 13, 2005

HONOLULU - Telescopes atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii recorded the most distant cosmic explosion ever seen, probably caused by the collapse of a massive dying star, according to University of Hawaii astronomers.

Astronomers from Japan and Hawaii used the telescopes to measure a dying star some 12.8 billion light years away, at the edge of the known universe.

The burst released about as much energy as the sun will emit during its 10 billion year lifespan, according to Lennox Cowie, an astronomer with the university's Institute of Astronomy.

"It's very difficult to detect objects at this distance because they're very, very faint," Cowie said. "This is a very exciting gamma ray burst. It's quite dramatic."

Because gamma ray bursts last only a short time, scientists set up an automated communications network to alert them when NASA's Swift Gamma-Ray Burst satellite, launched last year, detected radiation so they could train the telescopes on the source.

The call came in early on Sept. 4, and university astronomer Paul Price aimed NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea and the Magnum telescope on Haleakala at the source of the radiation.

"Because these explosions are so bright, they give us the opportunity to study stellar birth and death in the most distant universe in a manner we could only dream about a couple of years ago," Price said.

As scientists look farther away, they are looking further back in time, he said. With new technology, they are likely to see a star even farther away, he said.

Cowie said that by studying gamma ray bursts, scientists will be able to learn more about the star formation of the universe, and how our sun formed.

Studying the formation of stars will also help scientists understand how various elements, including carbon, were formed.

"This is a very fundamental aspect of the origin of everything, including us," Cowie said.

The astronomy team, led by Tokyo Institute of Technology astronomer Nobuyuki Kawai, used the 27-foot Subaru telescope to measure the precise distance of the dying sun.

Thanks so much, JP and Guy....a pleasure to hear from y'all, too! And well done on surviving into September again.

Yeah, it is clear how many folks like to handle the depth of winter, and keep their heating bills down, too! A stand-up solution, IMHO.

My birthday is well over now, though. Many thanks, everybody!!

Well that theory about our parents snuggling up on cold December nights all falls down here in Oz. December nights are usually stinking hot here. Didn't stop my brother and I from both being born in September (2 years apart). Not only that, but at the time, my parents lived in Parkes, which is in the Central West of NSW, and it is ESPECIALLY stinking hot there!
