Heartfelt congratulations England!! I was supporting the Aussies, but the whole series was exciting, brilliant cricket and I think both sides are to be congratualted for such well-played entertainment. The English deserved to win the ashes, but the Aussies have little to be ashamed about either. The best thing of all was the wonderful friendly atmosphere of the whole thing

I drank champagne with my Aussie parents and English husband and son last night!

We'll all be in the same boat next time, Gnu, unless we're prepared to pay Rupert bloody Murdoch for the privilege of watching.

Typical, isn't it? Just when the whole thing gets really interesting.

I agree about the Aussies tho'. As sporting in defeat as in victory, and the best of it was they lost playing bloody good cricket. No disgrace in that.

Shame the Aussies are flying home today. After the spirit in which the games were played, and because they were so good and made the matches so thrilling to watch, it would have been nice if they could have made an appearance at Trafalgar Square. Good on yer, Ricky & Co.

As for paying Rupert Murdoch - I don't even have a telly, let alone Sky, so I've been following it on Test Match Special on the steam wireless. Granted, you don't see Warne's terrific spins or Flintoff's joy, but you don't lose any of the tension. You can get it on the internet, too.

We've been spoilt with moving pictures. Listening to cricket on the radio is just as good, in some ways better. It doesn't take long to adjust either, and you can do other stuff at the same time.
I wouldn't pay Murdoch a penny for anything. Certainly not cricket. I would find that intollerable.

I find all sport tedious and boring - and cricket particularly so. Still, it has made a few of my fellow Englishmen (and even a few Englishwomen?) happy, recently, so where's the harm? If you find that patronising you could always go away (to put it politely!).
I have to say, though, that what I found particularly contemptible was all the 'fashion victims' who suddenly decided that 'cricket is cool' because England was winning. There must be millions of stupid w...ers, out there, with just a 'fashion antenna' where their brain ought to be!

more than a little help from Wales, and South Africa and Papua New Guinea! But a wonderful acheivement from the England team - it's just a pity that for many people reading the word 'England' upsets them somewhat.

Such is the nature of the British/English public, DB...

I wouldn't be entierly negative though. I don't think for one moment they all would become passionate followers of cricket, following England through think and thin but there is a good chance that some will have been sold on the game, rather than just the success. The biggest hope of course it that there will be some youngsters within that group - whose to say that a future England star may not have been attracted to the game by this series?

Subject: RE: BS: Well done England

It's Just that the Word England or English is about the people or the country that they live in, When I read about people talking about Britain and they really mean England, it's like when I go to Australia for my holidays, I come from Scotland, and not England, I mean how would you like to called A Scot or Welsh or Irish, you see some of us are more patrtaiotic that some others, I get asked questions like what's the weather like in England and I see to the Australians I don't know because I don't come England, so I say well what is the weather like in New Zealand, and they don't like that at all, well it's the same with the Scots, Welsh and the Northern Irish, we have keep reminding the people that we are not English we're either Scots, Welsh or Nortern Irish or British.

That all, I'm sorry but I am a very passionate Scot.

And I have upset anyone then I'm sorry, any way what this all got to with cricket and England wining the Ashes, let's not spoil their day.

I'm glad that England won.

BOTH SIDES THE TWEED
( Words trad, amended by Dick Gaughan / Music : Dick Gaughan )

What's the spring-breathing jasmine and rose ?
What's the summer with all its gay train
Or the splendour of autumn to those
Who've bartered their freedom for gain?

Let the love of our land's sacred rights
To the love of our people succeed
Let friends and honour unite
And flourish on both sides the Tweed.

No sweetness the senses can cheer
Which corruption and bribery bind
No brightness that gloom can e'er clear
For honour's the sum of the mind

Let virtue distinguish the brave
Place riches in lowest degree
Think them poorest who can be a slave
Them richest who dare to be free

I've no problem with that Tam. I lived maybe 30 years as an Englishman in Wales and am aware of the England=UK attitude that some people have. That said, I feel you have made your point on this many times in these cricket threads and whether people agree with you or not, your view has been taken note of.

I'm honestly not sure of the current situation with England and cricket but on that one, I just look at it as an historical naming that doesn't seem to trouble too many people. It would perhaps be more akward to rename the team?

The ECB does represent both England and Wales and one of our best bowlers in the series (Simon Jones) is Welsh. I'm not sure how Scotland or Northern Ireland fit into it now but as I said before, I can even point you to a captain of England who was a Scotsman.

BTW. England once had a bowler that I really liked - great accuracy - that I once thought was Scottish - Angus Fraser - but I believe he was born in Lancashire.

Tam, speaking as an Englishman and proud of it (most of the time!)I think everyone has a right to assert, and be proud of, their national identity. This is only a problem when the people of a particular nation start to believe that they are better than any other nation (and, God knows, the English have been guilty of that attitude in the past!). I can only speak for myself and say that I have always liked and admired the other nations that we English share these islands with and I genuinely believe that the British Isles would be a lot poorer place without you.

Oh By the way I love Swing low sweet chariot and Jeruslim by Parry and Blake.
I think that's they are brillant songs, there are people here in Scotland think that Swing low is an English song, just because the English sing it at Rugby games, me personally think it just a brillant song, and I sing at a wee session I go to in a town near to where I live in Scotland, and there's a rugby fan there who doesn't even join in with the song because the English sing it at rugby, but as I say it's only a song.

Ireland 44 England 13, In hindsight they shouldn`t have played the Queen at glorious Croke Park, the woman has a bad back and she couldn`t have given her best, although looking at the other queens that turned up for England, she might not have been out of place.
That is 4 years in-a-row now our wee country have beaten you, it should never happen, England have more rugby clubs than we have players, it is only our 4th most popular sport, and England can count themselves lucky it was only a thirty point margin, had Ireland taken all of their chances it could well have been a 60 point margin.
We are allowed to gloat after all 60 plus million against 6 million, it is a great feeling.
