Lyr Req: The Moon-Man Newfie (Stompin' Tom Connors

I've known the first line of this song for a very long time, and I would love to know the rest. Does anyone know the lyrics to this song? One of the lines is "You may think it is kinda goofy, But the man in the moon is a Newfie" I think it's by Stompin' Tom Connors. Thanks a lot!

The song also has something to do with "riding away in a golden dory..."

Did a Google search, found many copies of it out on the 'Net, chose one that is linked to [A HREF="http://www.tnsf.ca/guitarchive/c/connors_tom/moon_man_newfie.html"] here [/A]. With chords.

I remember this song from watching Canadian TV at the ages of nine and ten when we spent a good part of each summer going along with my dad on his research trips across western Canada. I think he had his own variety show on CBC at the time (Stompin' Tom, not Dad).

Now, I realize that some of our Canadian Mudcat contingent has expressed some...displeasure at Mr. Connors' success relative to the merit of his body of work. I remember very little but this song, and the fact that he did, indeed, stomp, so I can't say with any knowledge that that assessment isn't without merit. But the melody of at least the chorus has stayed with me for nigh onto thirty years, after hearing it only a small handful of times in my distant childhood. So that, perhaps, counts for something.

THE MOON-MAN NEWFIE
Stompin' Tom Connors

Chords: D, A7, G

CHORUS: [D] You might think it's [G] goofy, but the [A7] man in the moon is a [D] Newfie,
And he's sailing on to [G] glory, a- [A7] way in the golden [D] dory,
He's sailing on to [G] glory, a- [A7] way in the golden [D] dory.

1. [D] Codfish Dan, from Newfoundland, he [A7] dreamt that he had three [D] wishes,
And he took Mars and all the stars and [A7] turned them into big [D] fishes.
He said the sky was much too dry and he [A7] made a wavy [D] motion,
And the moon like a boat began to float up [A7] on the starry [D] ocean. [Chorus]

2. One [D] night he strayed to the Milky Way to [A7] cast his nets up- [D] on it,
He spied the tail of a great big whale and he [A7] harpooned Halley's [D] Comet.
He never had a pot for the fish that he caught so he [A7] had to use the Big [D] Dipper,
And the sun, by Jove, was a very good stove for [A7] cooking up smelts and [D] kippers. [Chorus]

3. Now the [D] Northern Light that seem so bright like [A7] nothing could be [D] grander,
Well they're just waves of the moon-boat made by the [A7] Newfoundland com- [D] mander,
And don't you sigh and say, "Oh, my! What [A7] gross exagger- [D] ation!"
'Cause he'll tell you the dream was true when [A7] Codfish Dan a- [D] wakens. [Chorus]

Oops! There were chords imbedded in that when I clipped it, but I never stopped to think consciously about the fact that they were in angle brackets. If a kindly Joe Clone could disinter them (and the bits where it says "Chorus" in angle brackets), I'd greatly appreciate it.

Well shoot, I thought I had it in seconds flat, but you beat me, SD! My find had the chords placed correctly, though.**BG**

Well, mine are place correctly, dahlink, it's just that they're...uhm...well...invisible.

Hey, my invisible friend can play them....

Well, I fired off an email to fraserhurd@perth.igs.net, and a coupla minutes later got back a "User unknown" message, so I guess this is just for our edification and delight.

MMario, how are you at transcribing from a quick listen? I stink at it, but PM me if you're willing to hear the thing & transcribe....

Well, I'm no better, and as it turns out, my childhood memory wasn't completely spot-on. Close, but definitely an example of the "folk process." So, I can provide the pretty noises to anyone who'd care to volunteer.....

I know the tune, I can't transcribe it but I can record it toMP3 email it to anyone who wants it. But being a Newfie myself, I wonder why anyone, especially a non-newfoundlander would want it.

I like the verses - might drop the chorus or rework it. But it "reads" like a fun song to sing. and it could be reworked for barious localities

codfish Dan, from Nantucket...
