Lyr Req: She Had a Pair of Cotton Stockings On

Help – I need the lyrics to this song my dad sung it for years. He has Alzheimer’s now and doesn’t remember the words. The above was part of it (SHE HAD A PAIR OF SILKEN STOCKINGS ON)
Follows with:
Hair tied up with a ribbon on, I’m going to marry that little Irish girl.

Hope someone knows it.
         Thanks, Mary

Absolutely ANYTHING else you can recall?

When did your dad sing it--year(s), decade. Where did he sing it. On another site you mentioned cotton stockings, Mary. Is it "silken stockings" for sure?

You are right about the stockings I made a mistake... Me Dad has sung it for at least 60 years he is of Irish origin but I was born in England.
It goes like this
she had a pair of cotton stockins on her hair tied up with a ribbon on
I'm going to marry that little Irish girl

Thats the end of the song But he always finished with

Knees up Mary my fine daughter
Knees up Mary if you can
Knees up Mary my fine daughter and show your legs to an Irish man

I think it started something about courting and when he knocked on the door her Father wasn't in

Search DT for STEP IT OUT MARY.

Not quite the chrous you give but it must be a very similar song.

Hope this is of some help.

Refresh. I've changed the thread title since we've ascertained the stockings were cotton - but I still can't find the song.

Hi, Mary - As Breton Cap says, Step It Out Mary (click) must be the song you're seeking - even though it has no mention of stockings. Sometimes, songs have slight variations.

Looks like you've nailed another one, Joe, and it's probably distantly related to the western song "Stepping Out Nancy."

Cheerily,

Mary posted in another thread to say she didn't think "Step It Out Mary" was her song. Perhaps not, but I think "Mary" must be a version of her song.
