BS: Sadness

Subject: BS: Sadness and cricket
From: hilda fish

I am feeling a little bit sad for the British this morning. There they are on the streets of London so drunk and happy, celebrating like there is no tomorrow. Poor little buggars. And over a game of cricket. And they won't even remember it tomorrow morning - too drunk and hungover. So sad that it's not us ozzies - we've been doing that crap for years and now have to find something more meaningful - and so sad that some people have nothing else in their lives or is that being a little too patronising? Ah well I'll go off and sing a little bit of "Let's not have a snivel. Let's have a bloody good cry. And always remember the longer you live, the sooner you bloody well die."

I don't think it was just over a game of cricket.   Quite a bit of it was Londoners being bomb-happy. Or rather, refusing to be bomb unhappy.

Remember, the tibe/bus bombings of 7/7 came the day after the big celebrations for Lopndon getting the Olympics. I think part of today was "As we were saying before we were so rudely interrupted..."

Well "Freddie" seemed to have had more than a couple when I saw him interviewed earlier and I think he had well earned his celebration.

For me, I was really pleased to see a world class England.

I feel sorry for anyone whos life revolves around some silly ball kicking, throwing, hitting game.
If they lose, they destroy property, if they win they destroy property. Why not just destroy property and forget the silly game?

The English today are celebrating a remarkable sporting achievement that has evaded them for almost a generation, and it was achieved by genuine skill and commitment. (There was no Jonny Wilkinson this time.)

Good luck to them. Let them have their party.
We'll take the Ashes back again year after next anyway.

Don't be sad for the "british" Hilda; multitudes of us "britishers" felt a fair degreee of disgust to find the BBC "world news" on the net with the most important global event being the ENGLISH [note---!]
triumph over Australia. Not kids dying in the latest military assault in Iraq, not the U'S' hurricane---a bloody insignificant victory in an insignificant minority sport!
For the record, I am "british". I am NOT English.[They are the salt of the Earth, but belong in one section of the British Isles.] No offence meant here--but how would you like to be called "Hilda Haddock"?

The thing about cricket fans is that they are still well-behaved. You're still allowed (expected!) to take beer to watch a cricket match and the nearest you get to a riot is when the West Indian fans strike up with the steel band. This latest series has been the most exciting for years and has captured the attention of people who are not usually intererested in it.

As for whether it should have made "world" news or not, don't forget that we recently had several months following the trial of an aging singer - at least this was a happy event and sometimes happy events should be shown on the news.

I agree completely Manitas. There's plenty of time & space for the serious news and an abundance of misery to fill it up. We can afford to let the headlines go for just one day with something that makes a lot of people happy.

If you dont like it you dont have to watch it and make extremely "DUMB" comments, gain some repect.

Well, Oz has had a VERY good run in the recent past, and when you're at the top, the only way out is down.....

Manitas, the Barmy Army have ever been well behaved, and the Lions fans who recently visited us here in NZ were equally so. They drank not a few pubs dry, sang everyone hoarse, and departed (well, mostly) rather disappointed, but without any one of them being arrested for misbehavour. Policemen were pleasantly surprised.

I've just watched the Ashes winners being paraded through London, on TV news. "25,000 people, and the crowd is getting thicker all the time....."

Well Sorcha I find yor sweeping and bitter statement flabberghasting. Were I to say all cops are dumb or all fiddle players are stupid it would be the quivalent of what you posted, firstly it would be a lie and secondly it would be mean spirited in the extreme. I don't know how Americans would feel if the British criticised American Football, or baseball, but I guess it would be about the same as Brits feel about your picking on their national game. I suggest you stick to making comments about things you know something about, and stop spoiling other folks joy with silly sweeping statements.

Well done England cricketers both male and female!

I think Hilda is being more philosophical, [having seen similar behaviour in Oz], than denigrating the actual game or the fact that England won.

a bloody insignificant victory in an insignificant minority sport

Beating the best in the world is normally as significant as you get in sport.

Minority sport. Hmmm. Britian, NZ, Australia, SA, West Indies= A small sport.

And India, Pakistan, Bangledesh ( total Pop ~1,380 million).

If it's a minority sport, I think only soccer, Golf and basketball would class as major ones.

"An insignificant minority sport".
What a load of unadulterated, uneducated bollocks. The insignificant minority sports are those where competition is limited to one country, but they pretend it's a 'World Series'. Or sliding stones on a patch of ice until they stop.

remember, to call someone an old bastard is a strong statement of affection down here.

Ahhhh........ so sorry. I meant to be good humoured in usual back-handed way. Thanks 'Giok' for getting it. It's cricket and it's fun - a game - nothing more or less. Take it as you will, there are winners and losers but all part of the game and such good sported fun to take the mickey out of each other. All part of the same team - human - ultimately - and to share a laugh as winners or losers is surely a good thing. Be kind to each other. It's a tough old world out there.

England and Australia have a complex history and a complex relationship. Cricket is a competitive love both peoples share, and it can represent our differences and disagreements as well as our similarities and agreements.

This particular series has brought out the more positive aspects of both our national personalities and, as you may have noticed, many of us have commented on what a pleasure it's been to have witnessed it together.

It has been a remarkable series. I don't think there were many people at either end of the world who would have expected England to win, and to do so with almost no unpleasantness from either side, both players and supporters.

I think it's a sign of the times. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it seems to me that your average mug-in-the-street has had enough hatred and just wants to enjoy life for a while.

They shouldn't have been - rugby crowds (of both codes) are notoriously well-behaved. I hope I didn't imply otherwise ( just checked - I'm sure I didn't) when I said cricket fans are well-behaved. Oh, and I'm not implying hockey fans are badly behaved either...

Well I just heard on FOOC on Radio4 that expatriate England fans were celebrating uproariously in a Sydney bar, singing amongst others, to the tune of Yellow Submarine, "We all live in a penal colony" now I could understand some Sydneysiders getting annoyed at that;~)

They were, and what's more they greeted our (losing) team at Sydney airport with 'winners are grinners'!!!!!! You can't beat 'em. They were offered cups of tea which everyone thought they could handle (Barmy Army that is) as it seemed that the hop stuff made them stagger around quite a lot. Certainly couldn't play cricket with them although our losing team offered to.
