Folk on satellite radio

I just read that Sirius is dropping their folk channel - Folktown- replacing it with a channel called "The Coffeehouse". Their description of the new channel is "Pull up a funky chair and join us for a cup of java and great acoustic rock from the world's best singer/songwriters."   Doesn't sound like much folk content. I guess they are afraid of the "F" word.

I subscribe to XM and enjoy their folk channel - The Village. While it may not be everyones cup of tea, I admire the diversity of offerings. In a half hour I can hear everyone from Doc Boggs to Richard Shindell, Joan Baez to Eliza Gilkyson, The Brothers Four to The Mammals.   Granted there is a commercial slant to the offerings, but traditional gems can be found.   For a commercial venture, XM is doing alright with folk.   The Village also offers shows such as Rich Warren's Midnight Special and Folkstage.   It is great to hear such music 24 hours a day.

I bring this up because I would hope that anyone in the Mudcat family that listens to XM takes a moment to drop them an e-mail letting them know that you are listening.   Unlike terrestrial radio, satellite does not have a ratings system and they rely on listener response.

I am not connected with XM, except as a fan.   I host my own radio shows on non-commercial radio, and there will always be a home for programs like mine across the country.   I do think it is important as satellite radio gains in popularity that folk music maintains a presence.   Cheers to XM. Stay away from Sirius!!!   (Just my opinion!)

Sirius XM's folk channel "The Village" (which was XM-only since Sirius dropped Folk Town prior to the merger as noted above) has recently been taken off the over-the-air lineup to make room for special interest ethnic programming, although it can still be heard via the company's online service. This decision has caused much consternation for the channel's loyal listeners, and I understand there's an online petition aimed at convincing Sirius XM to restore it to the satellite feed.

I hope such choices won't become epidemic. I quite like the Galaxie folk radio channel that's included (as are a zillion other radio offerings) with our satellite TV package.
