There's to be a radio tribute to the late Frank Harte on RTE Radio 1 on Thursday night 10pm local time.

One of the truly great artists of our time. When he did a street song, it was the definitive version.

God be good to him,

Mick

I hadn't heard about his passing, what a great loss.

Some yrs back we had the Boston Traditional Singer's Club & we'd meet weekly tossing a dollar a head into the kitty to saved incase we'd be able to hook a great singer passing though. Frank Harte was one the most memorable of the singers that we ever hooked. We started off with a few songs from the club members then a stretch from Frank with a small break with more floor singers & a final stretch from Frank ending with a few more floor singers who hadn't had a chance earlier (after this was a singer's club not a concert). I wouldn't say Frank was the best of singers, probably more like a treasure for great singers. Having Frank was a bit like having an old memeber who'd been away for a long time come back & cross that with a porch pick or a kitchen party, with him cooking it all up.
What a wealth of info with an "I'm just another one of you who like traditional songs" with a casual, friendly attitude & a love for passing on what he knew. Later after I sang a song (Red Haired Man's Wife) he came over & he chatted about the song. Ending the chat he asked for my address & said he'd send me some info on the version I sang. 9 or10 months later I got an apology note from him for not writing sooner & he couldn't quite remember what info he was to send on that version of the song he was gonna send me. So he sent what ever he could muster on that version plus hand wrote out 3 more versions & the backgrounds to those too. I never asked him for any info on anything, just sang a song. That's a person who loves the music & loves to share it with other. It's no wonder his reputation spans continents. Sorry to see he's moved on. RIP

Barry

Barry, I remember the evening well, a lot of fun. Frank had just arrived from Ireland, was a little jet lagged and not in tip-top form. Great to see you back on Mudcat.

I won't be able to listen to the RTE1 show live but I look forward to hearing it later.

All the best,
Dan

Hey Dan, good to see you too, hope to see you & your lovely wife soon.

I clicked the wrong button....................RTE 1 on Digital Satelite, though 11pm (my time) is a bit late, have to be up at 6 for school . But I can record it onto the harddrive. yippeee.

There was a lovely obituary in the IRIsh Times, which I lent to a friend to read. He still has it. If I get it soon, I will post it here.

At one stage in the program, in a live recording, just as Frank reached the last line of "The Hot Asphalt", a voice joins in with a closing harmony. Sounds like it was me! No idea when the recording was made.

A gentle, affectionate tribute to a great man.

I love Frank Harte. The last time I saw him was in Diane Hamilton's home in Dublin...Seamus Ennis and Paul Brady were slugging it out instrumentally in the front room; at an interval I asked for a song and they just laughed and started playing again. I headed for the back room and there before the fire sat Frank and a few other friends. Frank said, "Ah, Jean- come on in,now we can do the real music!" We sang ballads round that circle for hours. What a night. Frank is a beautiful soul.

Good on you Martin for the RTE Link, and do look around the RTE Site for other folk and traditional programmes.
