21 Sep 05 - 11:10 AM (#1567696) Subject: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Andy Jackson Hello all, thought I'd get the ball rolling this year and start the thread. The website www.miskinfolk.co.uk is updated at last. Emails have gone out to most of our regular guests and as they reply their names will be added to the confirmed guest list. Eyelander and I have not had a very festivally year unfortunately, but we are now almost back in full swing. We intend to be at Mudgather at Banbury, see you all there? |
21 Sep 05 - 12:28 PM (#1567765) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Cats We'll be arriving sometime on Saturday afternoon - keep us a decent camping space - as National Conference this year has had to be changed to the Wed, Thurs Fri and sat at the start of Miskin, as opposed to me zipping off on Sunday. |

21 Sep 05 - 03:01 PM (#1567869) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Crane Driver Yes, as reported earlier, SussexCarole and I are getting married "A week before Easter" and will still be celebriated by Miskin. We've just starting preparing the Sloe Gin for the wedding toast. It's "open invite" to anyone who'd like to join us at Llangennith village hall on Saturday 8th April, and we'll arrange evening singarounds throughout the week for those who are staying on for Miskin. Watch for a thread giving all details later, when we have some idea what we're doing. All the best, Andrew |

23 Sep 05 - 05:40 AM (#1569054) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Splott Man Mary, The BBC Folk Club doesn't advertise by agreement between Frank Hennessy and the Social Club (Nigel will fill in the detail I'm sure) so no web links. It's an anything goes club, and I know that you and Anahata will be made very welcome, as would any visiting singer. Frank and the Hennessy's host it and top and tail the evening. It doesn't come across on his radio show, but Frank is a very entertaining host, seemingly improvising hilarious stories on the spot, sparking off from a previous song or any minor occurence. Don't forget there's also Gower Folk club on Sunday, Llantrisant on Wednesday and Newport on Thursday. And we'll still have enough energy for 4 days of Miskin. Sployy Man |

26 Sep 05 - 05:38 AM (#1570721) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: treewind From what I gather, Gosport and Fareham must be a very different festival from Miskin. Mary and I wrote to them recently to see if there was any chance of a booking and we got a very curt "we're only looking for NAMES" type of reply. (that was before we knew we'd be at Miskin the same weekend, or we probably woudn't have even bothered) Anahata |

I often have to rely on mail2web to get my emails though. I also have no newsgroup access due to an ongoing problem with Wight cable. Which reminds me I put an appeal on a new thread last night for information about a fundraiser. This is a re enactment of Kemps Morris dance from, I think Cantebury to Norwich, over Easter, to raise money for a medical charity. I need to find out more about this. Cheers Dave, and all. Andy |

26 Feb 06 - 08:26 AM (#1679220) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Andy Jackson Right then.. This years charity will be a splendid event re-enacting Kemps Jig. Between 15th and 21st April 2006 Ben Dauncey will Attempt to Dance from Tunbridge Wells to Worcester, a distance of over 210 miles to establish a new world record for Morris Dancing and to raise £100,000 for two national charities. Multiple Sclerosis and Make a Wish MS is unfortunately all too common and most people will know someone affected by it. Make a Wish are an amazing bunch whose simple aim is the "Granting wishes of children and young people aged 3 to 17 living with life-threatening diseases" pop over to http://www.nextfootup.com/ for more details. Two very appropriate causes for us to help with over Easter. My Guru will be bullying you for help with this...you have been warned. See you all soon. Andy |

Just so we all look at the same place, one of the recent files is at the bottom of Chris Kings page "Where do you Lie" Any comments about missing links are always useful, the site has grown so much over the years it is difficult to check every page. Thanks, Andy |

08 Mar 06 - 06:57 AM (#1688138) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: treewind I didn't try any of the sound bites, but if they're Windows WMA they'll only work on Windows. MP3 is a much more universal though it's still somewhat proprietary, and Ogg Vorbis, though less well known, is the really free alternative. (but many media players support it) Anahata |
08 Mar 06 - 09:56 AM (#1688237) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Fidjit So where are all these new media player clips then Andy. The ones that came up were in winamp (thought winamp was mp3) The ones that didn't come up were the three on Taranttella. What am I missing? And we are really looking forward to joining in with all the fun of the Miskin Fair. Can't wait. Coming early, leaving late. |
08 Mar 06 - 10:30 AM (#1688257) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Andy Jackson Well I've been back to 2003 and ALL the sound bites on Miskin site have the WMA extension. They play fine in Windows Media Player and Real Time. I would have thought that if you are used to using non windows O.S. then you will have found a way of opening these files on your system. The three Tarrantella clips are suffering from "missing link syndrome" they will be back d'reklee. If there is a link to someone elses site then obviously I have no control over the format used therein. Best come to Miskin and hear the real thing anyway. Andy |

16 Mar 06 - 05:35 AM (#1694965) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Andy Jackson To Richard Bridge and everyone else in general. As per usual the Mill Site is only available to us from Thursday late afternoon and has to be vacated by midmorning MONDAY This is more important than ever this year as there are a group of Scouts arriving Monday afternoon!!!!! The proper caravan and campsite 400 yards up the road will be available Thursday and you can stay here until TUSDAY. A much better bet if you can walk 400 yards. Although this is clear on the fliers I must write something similar on the website. Oh by the way the website is constantly being updated with more artist info so keep an eye on it. Another point while I'm chatting. If you have nmade links to Miskin on your site it would help if they pointed to the main title page as there is lots of info there that I don't repeat every year, also access to old pictures that you would not know about if you came in the back door. Ta See you all soon. Andy |

We plan to arrive on the Thursday and leave on Tuesday morning. For those I haven't met, look out for the big toothless lump with "Wysiwyg" across the scratchplate of his guitar. Don T. |

Anyone know what time sunset it that day? (Or we could aim at dusk) Look out for posters giving that and other dance times. Anyone can join in even if they've never done any border morris dancing before - bring your tatters if you have them. So - come and dance - or come play for us. On the Fri eve the tune will obviously be 'Lord of the Dance' so let's have a huge band! |

Last year (new to the internet), when trying to find sunrise times for Upton on Mayday, I could only come up with sites with incredibly complicated formulae to calculate. I gave up! This one is just so easy. I've even navigated the map and come up with Miskin itself so, bearing in mind it will be British Summer Time, this year the times are:- Sunset at Miskin on Good Friday 20.09.36 Sunrise at Upton on May Day 5.36.49 (and, yes, we aim to dance under the bridge at Upton from 5.30am!) 25 Mar 06 - 04:21 PM (#1702702) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Richard Bridge Heater heating. Turning off is another matter, but there are ways... Fridge fridging on mains electricity. Whether it will cope with summer heat another matter. Tomorrow we try it on gas... We have a workround on the tap microswitch. That leaves some shelving and figuring out how optimally to store the guitars, and the slow puncture. |

26 Mar 06 - 08:07 AM (#1703070) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Richard Bridge Yes! we appear to have gas fridge operation too. Whether it will cope with summer temperature, who knows? But it ought to keep the beer cool enough for Easter!! I now only need a gas isolator valve for the fire since the "off" setting is suspect, proper mastery of the "workround" for the cold tap microswitch, the slow puncture fixed, and a means to store ALL those instruments since we are now sorted for Jeff to come too. |

14 Apr 06 - 06:46 AM (#1717968) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Nigel Parsons It should be up and running well by now, so this is a gratuitous refresh with a song from Miskin 2003: Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2003 From: Nigel Parsons - PM Date: 25 Apr 03 - 10:33 AM MISKIN 2003 (TTTO Llwyn Onn- The Ash Grove) Verse 1 I went down to Miskin to visit a folk fest, And see if the weekend held something for me. I'd seen it on 'Mudcat' and thought it would be best To visit 'cos some of my weekend was free So I picked up my camera, and gathered my songbooks My longing for singing. I gave it its head. But when I arrived in that small Miskin village The pub had no 'Hwyl', And it all seemed quite dead! Verse 2 I got to 'The Miskin' a pub with a hist'ry And thought I might meet with someone from 'The 'Cat' But as I sat drinking, I thought 'tis a myst'ry These 'folk' are all locals, so where am I at? But then I was 'pointed' down to the Scout campsite Where folk were carousing inside Miskin Mill I got introduced to some folk from the 'Cat site, And sat there, conversed there, and drank there until.... Chorus .. There was singing and drinking, And dancing and drinking Lace making, and drinking 'Corn dollies' and beer I had such a time there that now I am thinking I'll be back at Miskin at Easter next year! Verse 3 So now that I've found what these folk fests are like, I Am looking for somewhere new that I can go. I've heard about Cambridge, Glynllifon and Sidmouth And dancing with 'Obby 'Orse down at Padstow But if I can make it My wallet may take it To Upton Upon Severn I'm hoping to go. If I can just get there, I think it would be fair To give up the booze for the weekend .although. Chorus There's singing and drinking, And dancing and drinking Lace making, and drinking 'Corn dollies' and beer I'll have such a time there that now I be thinking I'll have to do folk fests throughout all the year! 14 Apr 06 - 03:01 PM (#1718269) Subject: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Nigel Parsons Message on behalf of Miskin Man: "Having a lovely time: Wish you were here." Or, to paraphrase: The sun is up, the sky is blue We're singing here, So where are you? We're at Miskin. Miskin in South Wales. The forecast is a good weekend The singing here should never end We're at Miskin Where the **** (hell?) are you Oh, Misery, misery. By Sunday (night) we'll have barrels two or three. Most of the beer has been the best By Sunday night we'll drink the rest And be singing. Singing in South Wales |
14 Apr 06 - 03:03 PM (#1718271) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Nigel Parsons Also, new song (of mine) for Miskin this year, bearing in mind the recent wedding in S.Wales: Bugeilio'r Maes Gwyn: (Miskin Watch) (tune)Bugeilio'r gwenith gwyn Idle days at Easter time In poor, or clement, weather. At Miskin in Glamorgan's Vale We all will meet together. In "The Cottage" or "The Mill" We'll all combine our singing. We'll meet our friends; we'll drink our fill, We'll set the rafters ringing. Folk may come from far and wide. From Porth or Tonypandy. To toast Crane-Driver and his bride. And raise a glass to Andy It's he who keeps us coming here To him a debt we're owing. He books the site, he books the 'Acts' He keeps the be-er flowing. For long as salt is in the sea. Long as my hair keeps growing (o.k. poetic licence, it's in the original) Long as my heart beats in my breast To Miskin I'll be going. It is a small but friendly fest. And we all love it dearly. That's why so many of 'The Best' Insist on coming yearly So once more we'll sup our ale And raise our voices higher Once snug inside old Miskin Mill Around that old log fire. Nigel Parsons 14/3/06 |

Found the cure for insommnia, stay up till 2am listening to the impromptu sessions, stopped only by lack of drink and frostbite! -so , Monday night I'm in Coventry, and inna sesion with 2/3rds of Isambarde (the small and beautifully formed Jude was zzzzzzzzz), and Coleman Connelly strangling his gooseneck.....it were a tight squeeze in that wee room, and Coleman almost had his ear sawn off by Emma's bow several times..! so you see , the fun continues...... Thank you to Andy & Co, and all who took part. (and to the funny woman with the red face and the man with the metal uke, cheers for telling me about it) |
18 Apr 06 - 07:59 AM (#1720976) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Townie What a wonderful festival,so great to see so many old friends "I know not so much of the old". Why havn't I been before - I must have missed such a lot. Havn't enjoyed myself so much for ages. I know Geoff felt the same and of course I think Emma enjoyed herself - just a LITTLE!!!! Big thank you to Sue - enjoyed the dancing. Look forward to seeing you all next Miskin and hopefully some of you before then. Next stop Fox & Hounds. |
18 Apr 06 - 09:16 AM (#1721037) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: MBSLynne Daughter! That's naughty!! How nice though, to see my baby taking steps into being a grownup amongst all our extended family. I know they got quite a lot of teasing, but it was all very affectionate and I think the general thought was "Ahhhhhhhhhh....." The music in the little marquee was certainly a wonderful way to go to sleep. Don't understand why other festivals make people stop playing at a certain time. Nothing noisy and intrusive about that sort of sound. I'd like to go on about how great it was, but I've already said it. Miskin not only re-charges my folkie batteries, but actually reminds me of who I really am, which is priceless Love Lynne |
18 Apr 06 - 09:17 AM (#1721041) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Snuffy There is nothing like Miskin anywhere else, which is why people keep coming back - and spreading the word! It's just such a perfect start to the festival season, with room to see top-class performers uncluttered by mikes and amps; or join in a craft or dance workshop; or sing or play whatever floats your boat (almost round the clock if you wish); or even just to relax and talk and watch the world go by. Great to see so many of the regular attenders back again, and so many new faces this year, who nearly all quickly seemed to "get" what Miskin is about and added their own wonderful contribution to that old Miskin magic. With all the uncertainties of coping with an extra day, huge thanks must go to all the bar staff, kitchen staff and stewards for their extra duties, but especially to Andy and Jillie and their team for their planning beforehand and tireless work during the festival keeping their fingers on the pulse. WassaiL! V Oh, and where can I get the dance notation for that Upton-on-Severn "Chav" Dance? |
18 Apr 06 - 09:26 AM (#1721052) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: GUEST,Tori Hi, Just wanted to add my thanks to Andy, Jillie and the team - what a festival! I really don't know how you manage to do it, year after year - you are true stars! Thank you for everything! highlights for me: Tracy Curtis, George Simmons, Ember, the session on Sunday with Isambarde, Harriet and the gang, 'Chav' morrisdancing on Sunday night, Peter Collins, Mike Nicholson and many many more... thanks to everyone who made it wonderful, Tori |
18 Apr 06 - 09:27 AM (#1721053) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: The Barden of England Also forgot to mention how much I enjoyed 'Ember', and the singing and playing in Nellies and upstairs too, along with hearing all the wonderful singers and players in those sessions. The Hill did for me too, but when your six-pack has turned into a firkin, your bum needs two chairs to sit on, your lungs have been got at by a severe infection 5 years back, you're on 5 pills for the blood pressure and you're carrying a guitar, I suppose it is a bit daunting. Never mind - it helped to burn off some of the copious amount of ale that I drunk. John Barden |
18 Apr 06 - 10:01 AM (#1721081) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: vectis A huge thank you to Andy, Lilly and the rest of the team for a fantastic weekend of folk and chat. Miskin is the most relaxed festival around and this is why it is sooooooo popular. Same again next year folks? Yes why not. There's nothing wrong with more of the same if it works and Miskin works big time. |

Caspion the bass is now back in his corner on the stairs (we have a small house!) He loved all the sessions upstairs! The chav morris was wicked! I was so proud to be a member of the side! tee hee! I believe more moves were being worked on the morning after too! Big thanks to Derek for being the chav morris box player. Shame it's all over for another year. Sigh! :-)) Vicki & Jonny |

As Lynne says, it brings you right back to where you should be. To Andy, Jillie & all the Hard Workers my eternal thanks for this wonderful way of enjoying Easter!! To all who contributed in whatever way to the MudRaffle - whether by organising, bringing prizes (we had about 60 in total), handing out prizes, being besieged time and time again by myself & Selchie and still smiling & putting your hands in your pockets for such a good cause - THANKYOU! Special mention HAS to go to Selchie & also Maddy who proved to be True Stalwarts - how they put up with my bullying I have NO idea *grin* All in a good cause though.... Major thanks too to the lovely young Lady who especially made a batch of Easter Chocolate Cornflake Cakes, which though unclaimed as a prize, were enjoyed by many festivalgoers in the Sunday evening session in Nellie Deans - as were the other unclaimed raffle prizes, which thankfully were all edible. The total of £430 for the raffle alone was incredible - goodness knows how much the Charity figure will be when the other monies are added in. Absolutely Fantastic! |

I didn't read about your big organ (see 12Apr 08.39) til I got home, so I never asked to see it. Another time, maybe. Huge thanks to you and Jillie and everyone else for a brilliant weekend. My special thanks to the musicians who played for Herbaceous Border and Schantieman for directing (??) the Mummers Play. If anyone has any photos of Herbaceous (especially when we 'danced on the Friday when the sky turned black') please tell me or Andy. Selchie suggested I send an article in to the Morris Federation magazine to mark this 'new Miskin Tradition' so a photo would help. Sue |
18 Apr 06 - 02:51 PM (#1721346) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Seaking Great weekend again - then a quiet drive home with an exhausted 'Mash' in the back of the car. Lots of highlights for me. Watching the kids play (obviously)and having so much fun, singing in the cottage, meeting old friends, getting to know some familiar faces a bit better and meeting some new friends. Also enjoyed the 'find the harmony' game I got into with Mike Nicholson and Tony from Capella on Sunday night after the pills (and Jo's wine) had kicked in - see below. Time Nick the soundman got a mention. He did a fantastic job with the PA system in the Scout hut again. One of the unsung heroes year after year. Most missable part of the weekend for me was the tooth infection that kicked in on Saturday and made life pretty miserable for a while. Sitting in a tent extracting a filling with a penknife to relieve the pressure , by torchlight, is something I have no desire to repeat anywhere again. Try finding a Pharmacy open on Easter Sunday near Miskin! Thanks to the person who finally supplied me with some industrial strength horse pills to relieve the pain, I'm in your debt. Last time I get my root canals done day before a festival !! Rota and roots allowing, see you next year.. Chris |

My most tingly moment was hearing Ian Woods sing a self-penned song called (I think) something like 'Lady of the Mountains', which he sang in The Cottage on Sunday night after the official concert. He has an amazing voice. So many nice moments over the weekend. Lynne |

Just a quickie to say how much I enjoyed Miskin this year and, for me, it was probably one of the best ones yet! Already counting down the days til next year's. Fingers crossed that Dad's rota works out so that we can get down in 2007 but if not, I'm walking! =( Very upset to hear that I missed Chav Morris Dancing by the way, it sounds like it was a laugh...innit. =p Oh yeah 'Mash' is thinking of changing their name- anyone got any ideas?? We didn't realise it was the name of an old-fashioned TV show until recently but it's kind of stuck and people have got used to it so we may not. We'll see what happens... Anyway I've got to go because I'm meant to be revising but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next year. Thank you so much to Andy, Jilly and the unsung heroes for making it such a great festival once again. I'm very proud that my violin now has the permanent smell of beer on it- I'm feeling like a true folkie!! Talk soon and missing everyone... Rosanna XxXxXxXxX |

19 Apr 06 - 01:34 PM (#1721956) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Just like to add my thanks for a great festival too. Having not done much with folk music for a year or so (too much classical guitar!) it was a great way to get back to it. It was nice to meet quite a few people from the South who I hadn't seen since I moved. I particularly enjoyed the mid-afternoon guitarry sessions in Nellie Deans' on Friday and Saturday with Dave Bennet (Dave4Guild - excellent guitarist) and John Barden (The Barden of England - great voice and songwriter and a pleasure to meet). The organisation was excellent. The bar was the most efficient I've seen it (I missed last year, so it may have been as good then) - I never had to wait for more than one person ahead of me all weekend. And I must add my own praise for the sound in the Scout Hut - it even made me like listening to myself! The food also seemed well sorted out on the few occasions I used it. Thanks again Andy and Jillie. Mick |

19 Apr 06 - 04:05 PM (#1722115) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: MBSLynne Rosanna, as I said last year...if your Dad is working, we'll come the (very) long way round and get you...even if you have to sit on the roof! Yes the bar was good...Black Rat!!! Ecstasy! AND it lasted till very nearly the end too. The food was wonderful, apart from the tendency to stick coleslaw, which I loath, on everything. The only big complaint is that there is too much going on at once so that I missed a lot of things and people I would have liked to see and hear. Sounds as though Burberry Morris needs to be given a spot next year! Love Lynne |

20 Apr 06 - 04:58 AM (#1722586) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2006 From: Richard Bridge I think that guitarry session must have been while I was in the cottage, maybe even hearing Tori sing. It is a truly humbling experience to be able to gather together such a group with such a bond of friendship and so much phenominal collective talent. I have followed every word of this Mudcat thread since the very start and time permitting chipped in occasionally. The last few days I have been reading in absolute wonder!! What have I got here? I wanted to reply to each and every thankyou personally and was waiting for the fuss to die down, but it hasn't. And then last night the amazing gesture of waiting for me to get the 500. You know I'm a soft old bugger, and that was the final emotional straw. (Tissues please) It is Jillie's Birthday today so I will be trying to get her away from Miskin chat and relax for the day. You should see the lists that She and Anna have made already for next year!! For the time being, a real heartfelt collective thank you to all of you. Mudcat have really got the Miskin Tingle factor. It took me and Brenda a few days to recover from this year's Miskin, which is why I haven't posted before, just totally knackered! - the whole weekend was magic, meeting old friends and making new ones. The music was great from beginning to end. It is difficult to pick out a "Magic Moment" but one was playing Teddy Bear's Picnic with Ned (Splott Man) outside in the sunshine. Playing in Nellies Bar alongside Mick Pierce at various times during the weekend was a privelige, hearing Vikki and Johnny and their young friends was fantastic and howling with laughter with Bill and Joan, getting Giggly with Trefor and Vicki and...on...and..on and on!! Thank you Andy and Jillie and all their helpers. Dave'n'Brenda |
