last week was exceptional
tues, wed, thurs, fri, sun, tues again.
thats not counting a few afernoon pro gigs - not really folk music, and recording a song, and rehearsing another.
I prefer just meeting round a mates house and having a jam these days.
music is best when you're playing for yourself, learning new stuff and new ideas that make you want to practice and experiment - in a way that you shouldn't really in public - particularly when you're being paid.

being a modal folker, I am welcome in many venues!

(I used to mix cement with a multi-tined implement, but I just got laughed at when I explained I was a mortar forker, so I quit.)

Last Tues, Preachers' Sons (rockin' blues) jam.
Wed, open mic.
Thurs, Guiddle M'Jig (guitar/fiddle) set at the nursing home in a.m., choir practice later.
Fri/Sat off.
Sun, church choir.
Mon, off.
Tues, jam with piper friend.
Today, jam with concertina friend in a.m. and Preachers' Sons jam later.
Every weekday, some jamming with students, and practice for myself.

Friday next, evening gig with former bandmate.

Next week, it all repeats with some variation.

I would do more if I could.

Peace, Mooh.

My folking of preference the last few years has been the jam. Love it.

Have you noticed the same phenomenon that I have recently?- if I don't have an instrument with me, I'm perfectly content to just sit and listen. Somehow your instrument reminds you that you were planning to do something- changes the whole mindset.

I also love working sessions. My singing partner and I meet several times a week, in addition to the weekly song circle.

We are also now in the process of bringing a third person in to make a trio out of what we're doing. SP and I have learned about 40 songs now and worked out harmonies for them. With the new member coming in on some songs - he has a high tenor voice - we'll develop a different format with a third harmony. It's all fun.

We recently started a monthly folk club too and it's a blast.

There are no folk clubs within 50 miles of here, and there are I believe a couple of sessions in pubs, again not locally. So either I drive 20/30/40/50 miles to smoky pub where I can only have one drink because I'm driving, or I get folked in lumps by going to a couple of festivals and a Mudcat gathering or two, when I can. Don't suggest taking a bus as there are none, the train station is 4 miles away, and there are only 4 trains a day.

Depends really, I sometimes go to my local folk club, I sometimes go to others, I sometimes go to my local and others for guest nights, and if this year is anything to go by, I get folked on average, one weekend a month!
(That is that my festival count is currently 11, with 5 to go!)

I do so enjoy getting folked on a regular basis!

Every morning at Mudcat provided it is accessible.

Giok - and what about a bicycle? or better a tricycle; it can't tumble when the driver is drunk.

At the moment about once a year - at Sidmouth.
We did get very excited to discover a folk club within half an hour of our place in West Wales, but it turned out to be the direst, most poorly-arranged affair I've ever encountered, run by a control freak whose idea of a folk club was him sitting in front of a minuscule audience picking out bluegrass numbers with enough amplification and electrickery to satisfy Spinal Tap. Suggestions that more partiicipation from guests and floor singers were met with the tart response that "this is a performers' club, you know".
The sad thing is, this is the only 'folk club' within miles, so anyone coming across it without knowing what the real thing was like would risk being put off traditional music for life.

Very hilly in Scotland Wilfried, and frequently wet, who would carry my guitar, and can you cure my arthritic hips so I can ride a bicycle for more than about 5 miles?

More than I'm able to find time for - there's folking every night in these parts if you have the stamina. It's very humbling to read some folks experiences - that "folk club" in West Wales described by Gervase certainly ain't no folk club, and I'd suggest starting a genuine one!

Ah, the days of my youth. I remember folking three or four times a week, mostly at open mikes or at friends' houses, occasionally at paying gigs.

Then I got older and got married and developed additional obligations. Now if I folk once a week I figure I'm on a roll. Used to play my guitar every day. Now it might be every week. I look forward to retirement and more time to folk around.

Between elderly parents needing attention and the need to keep the day job nowhere near enough. Pigged out on early music at the South Bank last weekend, plus a chance to see the lovely Rivington Morris then nothing for a fortnight. After that the ceilidhs get going again so will be hitting the dance floor three or four times a month plus a couple of clubs or sessions.

Monday: Almond Valley Folk Club, Tues: Balerno Folk Club AGM, Weds: Edinburgh Folk Club - Archie Fisher (after ALP Scots Music mixed instrument class), Thurs: Newtongrange or Portobello (but stayed in to wash hair and do some WORK!), Friday: Davey Graham at Ed FC or Hootenanny in Glasgow.............and so it goes on! Iain Anderson playing good music on BBC Scotland online as I type too!
Can't wait for retirement , then i can go out EVERY night!

I used to folk quite often but now, sadly, as I am older only do so rarely (generally around the first weekend in May). I believe I may next folk in Cork, a scene of much enjoyable folking in my younger days.

Once a week, every week on Friday nights at a session.

Plenty of beer and tunes, with the occasional song.

I go out for up-to-speed folk on Tuesdays, and slow folk on Thursdays, and sometimes me and the boys go out and do it in public. It really raises a few eyebrows at the farmer's market, but they seem to like it. But then Vermont is one of those hippy states.

Robin,

Plucked, of course! Sometimes with a feather, sometimes with a pretty primrose pick.

I have considered adding amplification. An electrical boost would improve the output, don't you think?

I did get jazzed a bit tonight, and that felt pretty good, I'm happy to say.

Lookin' forward to some good ol' fashioned folkin' this coming weekend at SunnyCamp in SW Washington, though!
