30 Sep 05 - 09:38 AM (#1572664) Subject: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Ron Davies At this point, all Bush cares about is his "place in history". He imagines, in his deluded state, that his Iraq adventure will turn out to be seen as a triumph. But aside from this, he wants to be known as the first president to appoint a Hispanic to the Supreme Court (thus upstaging every Democrat). Alberto Gonzales has been his friend for quite a while, and as we know, he likes to appoint his friends to top spots. Even some liberals admit Gonzales, while on the Texas Supreme Court, wrote "solid consistent and well-reasoned opinions." And, as with Roberts, it will be a waste of resources and political capital, not to say verging on political suicide, for Democrats to oppose the first Hispanic-- (fastest growing segment of the US population)-- ever appointed to the Court. The relgious right may not like him for his views on abortion. If so, too bad for the religious right. Bush will never run again. If the religious right doesn't like it, where are they going to go? For Bush, there also may be the added benefit of attracting a few more Hispanic votes for Republicans. After all, in the 2004 election Bush already won about 40% of the Hispanic vote. Any other views? |

30 Sep 05 - 06:54 PM (#1573002) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Ron Davies I don't think he'll pick a woman--after all, he gets no bragging rights by doing so. |

30 Sep 05 - 07:42 PM (#1573021) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Bill D well, Gonzales will get about 27 times the complaints that Roberts did....there would be a noise you haven't heard since Bork! |

30 Sep 05 - 07:57 PM (#1573029) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Ron Davies Bill-- Would the Democrats really want to protest the naming of the first Hispanic? Also, it's not like the Clarence Thomas situation, in which Thomas held opinons actually harmful to quite a few black people. It's not the same with Gonzales--with him the dominant feeling among Hispanics is likely to be (justified) pride at one of their own making it so close to the top of US society. And remember, as I noted earlier, Hispanics are by far the fastest growing segment of the US population (as well as traditionally being mostly in the Democratic column). |

30 Sep 05 - 08:20 PM (#1573038) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Bobert Well, it don't matter if it's Gonzales 'er another potential Clarence Thomas 'cause there ain't too many other folks that Bush will get approved with 78 votes.... Face it, Bush ainh't gonna nominate a liberal and if we look at Robert at no worse than Rienquist then what wer're lookin' for is someone of O'Conner's swingability.... Yeah, whatever politcal capital Bush thinks is still in the bank, which with very low approval poll ratings, it's gonna takle the last dime to get a right wing nutball in.... Might be time fir BUsh to get smart.... But history on the "get smart" part and Bush don't seem to mix too well so I reckon that Bush will go ahead and make the nomination as if he had a 60% approval rating... Nothin' he has done since his lawyers stole the 2000 election has shown me that the man has any level of integrity... Or political intellegence.... If Clinton had had Bush's luck and a Democrat controlled Congress he would have made Bush look like a bumblin' Alzhiemers in the local nursin' home... BObert |

Speedy Gonzales, how come ya leave me all alone? Spoken in a male Mexican accent: Hey, Rosita-I hafta go shopping downtown for my mudder-she needs some tortillas and chili peppers. (female voice singing a series of "La-la-la's) Your doggy's gonna have a puppy And we're runnin' outta coke No enchiladas in the icebox And the television's broke I saw some lipstick on your sweatshirt I smelled some perfume in your ear Well if you're gonna keep on messin' Don't bring your business back a-here Mmm, Speedy Gonzales, why dontcha come home? 30 Sep 05 - 10:30 PM (#1573113) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Bill D Ron...Bush 'may' decide to go for a 55 vote assoc. justice, with a split along party lines....that's what it would take to get Gonzales in. Many conservatives don't like him either. His only 'virtue' is being Bush's buddy. Maybe Bush is willing to have a loud, rancorous confirmation process if he thinks he can hold all the Republican votes, but he could lose big time trying it and cost the party a lot. hmmmmm...maybe I hope he tries..*grin* |

01 Oct 05 - 07:31 PM (#1573715) Subject: RE: BS: Gonzales: Next Supreme Court Justice From: Ron Davies Most people would not consider Cardozo "Hispanic", any more than the DuPonts are French. The Cardozo family is one of the US' oldest and most distinguished. One of them helped set up the New York Stock Exchange in 1792. Both of Alberto Gonzales' parents were Mexican farm workers. |

Was that Mel Blanc doing that, do you know? |
