I don't know an Italian song by this name, however, I know of a Spanish ditty of this title that was sung by either Lupe Velez (The Mexican Spitfire) or Carmen Miranda; the movie may have been Flying Down to Rio. Let me look in my attic. Will get back to you Les Blank

The song, as I remember, was sung by Carmen Miranda, Donald Duck, and Jose Carioca (the last two animated, obviously). What I remember is:

Cuanto la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta
Repeat
When are we leavin', Where are we goin', What are we gonna do.
We're on our way to somewhere, the three of us and you.
What'll we see ther, when will we be there, what'll be the big surprise.
We're headin' South tomorrow with starlight in our eyes.
We're on our way, we won't be back. And if we stay, we won't be back.
How can we go ? We haven't got a dime.
But we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy time.
Cuanto la gusta, la gusta, etc.

Enjoy !! Les

Not that it's at all relevant but as well as Carmen Miranda, Donald Duck and Jose Carioca it was also performed with great gusto by Miss Piggy of the Muppets

For the past several days, I've been remembering bits and pieces of this song. I did a DT & Forum search, which led me to this thread. With some of the lyrics provided by Les Blank, I did a google search and found several sites with all of the lyrics posted, as recorded in 1947 by the Andrew Sisters, with Carmen Miranda and Vic Schoen and His Orchestra, from the MGM movie A Date With Judy.

For those who want the entire lyrics, go to:

http://ntl.matric.com.br/pfilho/html/lyrics/c/cuanto_la_gusta.txt

Sorry, but I haven't mastered html to do the little blue clicky thing.

Robby's URL didn't bring up any lyrics for me.

However, the proper title of the song is "Cuanto Le Gusta", not "La". According to the following page, the song was performed in the 1948 movie "A Date with Judy" by Carmen Miranda with Xavier Cugat And His Orchestra: http://www.rhino.com/features/tracks/72722trx.html

Here's a page about "Flying Down to Rio" (RKO, 1933), with no mention of Carmen Miranda or the song; however, it does mention "The Carioca", the song that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced to – their first dance pairing on-screen (and the rest is history!): http://www.reelclassics.com/Teams/Fred&Ginger/fred&ginger1.htm

By the way, if I'm not mistaken (and Andrés can correct me if I am!), "cuanto le gusta" translates as "whatever you like" or "whatever is pleasing" or "as much as you please".

Someone said they just got back from somewhere.
A friend of mine that I don't even know

He said there's lots of fun if we can get there

If that's the case. That's the place.

The place we want to go

We gotta get goin' where we go and what are we gonna do?

We're on our way to somewhere, the three of us and you

Who will be there what'll we see there what'll be the big surprise

There maybe senoritas with dark and flashing eyes

We're on our way so pack your bags

And if we stay we won't come back

How can we go we haven't got a dime

But we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy time

Thanks Sharon, I didn't see the original lyrics, but the meaning of "Cuánto le gusta" is that of an exclamation "oh, how much he/she likes it !" I hope it refers to some dance.

Thank you, Andrés! Actually, the title as I've seen it printed (even on Spanish-language websites) includes the word "cuanto" without an accent over the "a", and that would change the meaning slightly from "cuánto", wouldn't it? (...bearing in mind that I'm trying to remember all this from my high-school and college Spanish classes, which I took an embarrassingly long time ago! *G*)

That's right, and your Spanish classes were excellent if you remember these details ! The difference is that the phrase "Cuanto le gusta" without the accent would mean "whatever he/she likes" which would make sense in another phrase more complete, for example "He gets whatever he likes" or "Consigue cuanto le gusta".

In the context of a mambo-like song, "Cuánto le gusta" makes more sense, as other usual phrases like "Cómo baila!" or "Cuánto me quiere!"

Please tell me whenever you want any information about Spanish or Latin songs. Cuánto me gusta! :))

Un abrazo - Andrés

Okay, Andrés, thanks for straightening me out.

Follow-up question: In order to say "oh, how much you like it!" in Spanish, using "usted", would one have to say "Cuánto le gusta usted" or may one drop the "usted" and say "Cuánto le gusta"?

27 Jun 02 - 12:36 AM (#737933)
Subject: RE: Lyric req: Quanta la Gusta
From: Escamillo

Yes, "Cuánto le gusta a Usted" would be necessary to differentiate the person, because the word "le" is a prefiz which indicates action affecting the THIRD person (he or she) and the form Usted is a kind of respectful protocol to name the second person (Tú = you) by using all the forms of the third.

For example:

"Cuánto te gusta" = "How you like it !" : there's no ambiguity, that's second person, familiar form.

"Cuánto le gusta" = "How she likes it!" OR "How you like it" : ambiguous.

"Cuánto le gusta a ella!" = "How she likes it"

"Cuánto le gusta a Ud." = "How you (respectfully) like it!"

Curiosity: The third person used in place of the second comes from the treatment of authorities in ancient times, but widely used to address parents in some regions, and it is the formal treatment for any person not familiar to us. The pronoun YOU was replaced by Vuestra Merced (Your Honour). Usted is a contraction of Vuestra Merced.

Curiosity II: My wife and I address ourselves as Usted with all the verbs in third person. She calls me by my last name and I call her "Señora". When we use the second person, it is a signal that something's wrong.

Un abrazo - Andrés

As young kids, my father who is now 76, I'm now 53, taught me this cute song when I was a kid. Just this past Saturday, we were out to dinner with relatives with their very bright six year old daughter, Sara, who is as smart as a 10 yr. old.

At any rate, earlier on that day, I heard Sara singing different songs, old songs. I was surprised to hear the assortment of songs she was singing.   So, I thought I would like to pass on this cute ditty to her, Cuánto le gusta", Quanta la Gusta. Not sure of the spelling, however, I would prefer it be spelled Quanta la Gusta, as to how it sounds.

At any rate, I wanted to find the lyrics so that I could just cut and past opposed to having to type it up and to check the proper spelling to the song. Unfortunately, the websites that were mentioned to find the lyrics are no longer available. So, I am going to just continue to use as I was taught by my father.   It is similar to one that is posted already.

Here is how I was taught to sing Quanta La Gusta:

Quanta La Gusta, La Gusta, La Gusta, La Gusta, La Gusta, La Gusta, La Gusta   (REPEAT)

We gotta get goin', where we're going, what are we gonna do,
We're on our way to somewhere, the three of us and you.

What'll we do there, what'll we see there, what'll be the big surprise,

There may be senoritas with dark and flashing eyes.

We're on our way (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap)

Pack up your bags (clap, clap, clap, clap)

And if we stay, (clap, clap, clap, clap)

We won't come back, (clap, clap, clap, clap)

How can we stay,

We haven't got a dime,

but we're still gonna have a happy time.

ENJOY AND KEEP ON SINGING!

Here are the lyrics to the song:

We often sang this song as children but I only just recently found out where it came from. Never knew all the words, just the chorus and the first verse. The film, A Date with Judy (1948) was recently released on DVD.

Forget the link--here are the lyrics.
I always liked the line-"Someone said he just came back from somewhere And picked a few petunias in the snow"--don't know what it means, exactly, but I'm there--

CUANTO LE GUSTA
The Andrews Sisters with Carmen Miranda
- words by Ray Gilbert, music by Gabriel Ruiz
- from the MGM picture "A Date With Judy"
- as recorded November 29, 1947 in Los Angeles by The Andrews Sisters
with Carmen Miranda and Vic Schoen & His Orchestra.

Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta
Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta

We gotta get goin', where are we goin', what are we gonna do?
We're on our way to somewhere, the three of us and you
What'll we see there, who will be there, what'll be the big surprise?
There may be caballeros with dark and flashing eyes

We're on our way (we're on our way)
Pack up your pack (pack up your pack)
And if we stay (and if we stay)
We won't come back (we won't come back)
How can we go, we haven't got a dime?
But we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy time

Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta
Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta

Now someone said they'd just come back from somewhere
A friend of mine that I don't even know
He said there's lots of fun if we can get there
If that's the case, that's the place, the place we want to go

We gotta get goin', where we're goin', what are we gonna do?
We're on our way to somewhere, the three of us and you
What'll we see there, who will be there, what'll be the big surprise?
There may be caballeros with dark and flashing eyes

I'll take the train (I'll take the train)
You take a boat (well I take the boat)
I'll take a plane (I'll take the plane)
You ride the goat (well I ride the goat)
Oh, we don't care, we'll either walk or climb
But we'll get there and we're gonna have a happy time

Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta
Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, le gusta

Someone said he just came back from somewhere
And picked a few petunias in the snow
He told me that it's very close to nowhere
If that's the case, that's the place, the place we want to go

------ instrumental break ------

We gotta get goin', where we're goin', what are we gonna see?
We're off to see somebody who's on his way to me
Gonna go my way, you go your way, wanna make a little bet?
We'll all meet in the country, they haven't found us yet

We're on our way (we're on our way)
Pack up your pack (pack up your pack)
And if we stay (and if we stay)
We won't come back (we won't come back)
How can we go, we haven't got a dime?
But we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy time
Yes, we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy, happy, happy, happy, happy
Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta
Yes, we're gonna have a happy time

I awoke this morning with this song dancing in my head. After struggling for half the day, trying to remember in which movie it was sung, I was rewarded on finding this forum. Only one thing... I could have sworn that part of the lyrics went:

We're on our way (we're on our way)
Pack up your pack (pack up your pack)
And if we stay (and if we stay)
And we won't be back (we won't be back)
For many a day (for many a day)

Thanks for clearing it up.

But please, to clarify it in my mind... at the end of the movie, did Judy and her friends sing "Cuanto le Gusta" and dance down the middle of the street, away from the camera? That's how I remember its ending.

I'm looking for the same song. Les had most of the lyrics right. Here are a couple of corrections -IN CAPs-that I remember (I sing it to my cat...I know..):

Cuanto la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta, la gusta , LA GUST...(Repeat)

When are we leavin', Where are we goin', What are we gonna do. We're on our way to WE'RE ON OUR WAY TO NOWHERE, THE 3 OF US AND YOU.

What'll we see there, when will we be there, what'll be the big surprise.
THERE MIGHT BE CABALLEROS WITH DARK AND FLASHING EYES!

We're headin' South tomorrow with starlight in our eyes. We're on our way, we won't be back. And if we stay, we won't LOOK back. How can we go ? We haven't got a dime. But we're goin' and we're gonna have a happy time. Cuanto la gusta, la gusta, etc. Enjoy !! Les

I wish I remember more, and hope I'm correct. I'm just filling in the blanks with what I remember. Between Les and (maybe me) this might help. I think there are more lyrics, but perhaps it's just a repeat...That's what i'm looking for too! My cat wants more!

I was part of an all-county chorus (Brooklyn, NY 1950s)that performed this fun song. Would love to find out if an audio exists of that event.

No one doesnt seem to have heard another version of this song sung by a gentelman and two gals. It was sung much faster than anything published so far. Its a much better version than anything else Ive heard on the web. Well, thats my humble opion anyways. And Im not so sure that Carmen Miranda was the first to sing it either. My mother recorded this song on a homeade record that her dad was making in his garage during the 40's. She was born in 1934 and she said that she was around 9-10 years old from what I recall when she recorded it off the radio. That would date it around 1943-1945. Give or take for memory loss. The cool thing is, I have the record and it still plays, with a moderate amount of background noise of course but you can hear every word sung...
