With some of the lyrics provided by Les Blank, I did a google search and found several sites with all of the lyrics posted, as recorded in 1947 by the Andrew Sisters, with Carmen Miranda and Vic Schoen and His Orchestra, from the MGM movie A Date With Judy. However, the proper title of the song is "Cuanto Le Gusta", not "La". Actually, the title as I've seen it printed (even on Spanish-language websites) includes the word "cuanto" without an accent over the "a", and that would change the meaning slightly from "cuánto", wouldn't it? (...bearing in mind that I'm trying to remember all this from my high-school and college Spanish classes, which I took an embarrassingly long time ago! *G*) |

The difference is that the phrase "Cuanto le gusta" without the accent would mean "whatever he/she likes" which would make sense in another phrase more complete, for example "He gets whatever he likes" or "Consigue cuanto le gusta". In the context of a mambo-like song, "Cuánto le gusta" makes more sense, as other usual phrases like "Cómo baila!" or "Cuánto me quiere!" For example: "Cuánto te gusta" = "How you like it !" : there's no ambiguity, that's second person, familiar form. "Cuánto le gusta" = "How she likes it!" OR "How you like it" : ambiguous. "Cuánto le gusta a ella!" = "How she likes it" "Cuánto le gusta a Ud." = "How you (respectfully) like it!" Curiosity: The third person used in place of the second comes from the treatment of authorities in ancient times, but widely used to address parents in some regions, and it is the formal treatment for any person not familiar to us. Just this past Saturday, we were out to dinner with relatives with their very bright six year old daughter, Sara, who is as smart as a 10 yr. old. At any rate, earlier on that day, I heard Sara singing different songs, old songs. I was surprised to hear the assortment of songs she was singing. So, I thought I would like to pass on this cute ditty to her, Cuánto le gusta", Quanta la Gusta. Not sure of the spelling, however, I would prefer it be spelled Quanta la Gusta, as to how it sounds. At any rate, I wanted to find the lyrics so that I could just cut and past opposed to having to type it up and to check the proper spelling to the song. Unfortunately, the websites that were mentioned to find the lyrics are no longer available. So, I am going to just continue to use as I was taught by my father. It is similar to one that is posted already. It was sung much faster than anything published so far. Its a much better version than anything else Ive heard on the web. Well, thats my humble opion anyways. And Im not so sure that Carmen Miranda was the first to sing it either. My mother recorded this song on a homeade record that her dad was making in his garage during the 40's. She was born in 1934 and she said that she was around 9-10 years old from what I recall when she recorded it off the radio. That would date it around 1943-1945. Give or take for memory loss. The cool thing is, I have the record and it still plays, with a moderate amount of background noise of course but you can hear every word sung... |
