BS: Hip hugger jeans & fashion casualties

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Why on earth do clothing manufacturers make hip hugger jeans in size 12 and 14 ? And above ? Several times in the last few weeks I've seen women who are such slaves to fashion that they thought it was acceptable to squeeze their size 14 frame into a size 10 hip hugger jean and crop topped t-shirt. Doesn't get me wrong. I love the hip hugger jeans - but they should only be worn by .05 percent of the female population. On them they look wonderful. On anyone else you just have to wonder what they were thinking. Do they not own mirrors ? The term "two ten pound hams fighting in a five pound sack" comes to mind.

Down here in Texas when one of these fashion casualties is spotted we're liable to say "Well bless her heart - she can't afford a mirror".

Men make their mistakes too. When ever I see an old bald guy with a comb-over - one inch of hair that has been combed to cover a vast expanse of bare skin on the top of his head - I want to walk up and whisper - "It isn't working".

Oh well - the air is getting a little thin up here on this soap box.

Add to that big women with really tight shirts. And I can say this 'cause I'm not one of the smallest women on the planet.
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING???

I always called those rolls of adipose tissue hanging over the waistband 'Love handles' but a lovely Australian lady I know called them 'Muffins', and when you look at them and think of a muffin overhanging its paper case it's a perfect name.

I think it looks terrible, too, Wesley, but have you ever looked throught he women's clothing departments in common venues such as Walmart/Kmart, etc.? Any woman who is not built like an anorexic teen finds nothing but bags/sacks/elastic waistband crap in the larger sizes. PLUS, if you are short AND "plus-size" forget it! The crotch will reach to your knees and the hem will be a good 4-6 inches too long.

That, plus most sizing, unless one can afford to shop at more expensive stores, has been reduced over the years, perhaps because a lot of it is made overseas, i.e. Asia, where sizing is just smaller. Today's size 14 is more like yesterday's 16/18.

Unfortunately, many women still buy into the "fashion fad" dictating what they wear, so...they may buy the smaller size because they cannot get it in the right size, then squeeze themselves in..ridiculous, I know, but they will be slaves to fashion, at times. I've seen too many teens who are NOT too skinny, also "flowing" over with the shorter shirts and hip-huggers. It's sad!

I'm back. I'm thinking about my teen and 20+ years. In those days, my mother subscribed to many magazines, and I saw articles about famous designers (usually from Paris) and what they were producing.

Now I want you to think about a modern young lady, and then picture the women she sees on TV, in movies, in the press. Do you think she gets a chance to see really sharp, nifty, flattering, well-designed clothes anywhere? I don't.

I don't do TV or movies, but the clothes I see in the newspaper seem to fall into one of two categories - street-walker or mental case.

I saw a photo of a runway model in New York last week. Her clothes were bizarre, and her hair had been plastered onto her head in clumps, so that it looked like masses of mold. It reminded me of George Bernard Shaw's description of Eliza Doolittle's dirty hair, pre-Henry Higgins. (Its mousy color can hardly be natural.) The model wore a sour expression, and I don't suppose she had to work at it.

One of the major reasons for wearing hipster jeans is because no one sells proper ones these days... Every time I look at trousers or jeans in the shops, I can never find a pair that just covers my legs, my (not inconsiderable) ass and reaches my waist without having the crotch dangling by my knees or revealing a crack you could park a tandem in........ if manufacturers made body shaped jeans, I might buy another pair.. as it is, I make all my trousers because I can never find a pair that covers everthing that ought to be covered!

If yer older than 30, you shouldn't be wearing them anyway.... Especially if when you have 'em on you can't look down and SEE the top button.... In the same way that if you can't SEE your navel without lifting it, or craning your neck, or if it's deep enough to take 2 knuckles of ANY finger, you should NOT have it pierced...

But... I LOVE when a hot piece of little early-20 something walks into the pub, wearing low-slung hip-huggers.... I don't even know her name yet, but already, I'm an INCH from pussy! Gods love 'em!

With apologies to Bill Maher....

My wife has always been able to wear the "classic" fit jeans from the Gap rather well. Imagine my suprise when I walked in to buy her a pair and was told that "We no longer carry the classic fit jeans in the store anymore - but you can order them online."

You call it a "classic" fit but you don't carry it in your stores ??

So now we buy from LL Bean.

I wear 'em, I just pull them up to the place where my waist once was. They're about the only jeans that I can find that conform to my non existant waist and still fit properly in the hip. Bugger the rest. I just take in the excess width in the legs on the machine and......voila.

My problem is that if there is any stretch to the material, they tend to slip down. Now I guess I could eventually remedy that, by wearing braces. Hmm.....perhaps a whole new industry there for older women. Fashion designed feminine braces....in electric green and black snakeskin or maybe red and purple paisley.....the mind boggles

Feminine braces don't work unless you put the Y at the front and quite high up... otherwise it restricts your ..er.... movements.

We have two differnt concepts here, not counting the other ones. We gave low rise jeans that, with stretch materieal, are VERY comfortable to those of us who don't have fat butts and teeny waists, because that's what they make traditional style jeans like. You get a bigger size and the butt gets bigger but the waist stays the same. Anyway, stretch jeans with the 'waist' just barely below the belly button. And then you wear a longish shirt.

THEN you have what Clinton's talking about. The jeans that, I would assume, one had to shave for. The ones that would show your tan lines from your string bikini. I do know women my age who wear them (well, not quite THAT low) and look good. I am not one. I wasn't one when I was 16.

Liz, a bustier with clasps for pants and shoulder straps? Maybe in black leather?

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.????

I have to concur with the observation by several that you don't really have that much of a choice. It comes down to:

Just because they can, you must.

It's a well documented and widely quoted axiom of modern marketing that anything that gets 10% of the market must be stocked by every retailer, and an apparently little known corollary that anything stocked by every retailer will drive all competing products off the shelf.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that 20 percent of our population are total idiots, and an even more unfortunate fact that enough of them follow fads to make them a "coherent purchasing group" that can easily produce the 10 percent for whatever "look" they fancy. The result is that those of us who are less perfect idiots find only "look-alike imitations" of what the "total idiot group" bought at some point in time when we go looking for merchandise.

Sadly, the elimination of choice for the rest of us leaves the idiot group few options or opportunities for discovering "something new" to drive the current crop of crud off the market, so the existing "status quo" may be expected to persist for some time. Any change is likely to come from a "limited-market" appearance of something even more bizarre than the crap we're offered now. (Such markets do exist, but their whereabouts is known only to "cults" consisting mostly of fad-followers in the above mentioned market groups.)

John-who-has-not-bought-a-new-pair-of-trousers-or-a-new-shirt-in-about-12-years - - - because....

I really do not understand why those women have chairs on their heads. I think I understand that they are wearing mantillas and mantillas only, not skirts. I also understand that this is probably some form of prostitution but why the chairs on their heads. I just don't get it!

BTW - Shopping is such a chore because of all of the comments above. I find that if I want to find clothes that fit, I have to pay a fortune in the high end shops. Ever try to find a simple t-shirt that wasn't fitted?

All this talk on the TV about obesity, and clothes just get tighter. Omar the tent maker is short on orders.

I get my jeans at Mark's Work Warehouse, where I'm not subjected to fashion fascists who tell me not to wear socks with sandals and other stupidity. They also sell me Canadian products at least some of the time. Do they sell jeans to women?

I've noticed women of weight constantly yanking those jeans up when the rolls are no longer contained. It looks desperate. If one cannot even act with grace in clothing not designed for them, change the clothing, because it probably also doesn't appear with grace. But, and it's another big butt...um, but...how one dresses is a personal choice and perhaps we shouldn't disuade folks from their fashion delusions if they're happier that way. We don't HAVE to look.

Turning the other cheek.

Peace, Mooh.

another fashion problem - when the shops are full of styles I won't wear & colours I wouldn't be seen dead in. Apart from the beautiful floaty skirts.

up on the soapbox -

Yesterday I was on the hunt for a few longer sleeved shirts (tee or Indian style) in plain darker colours. I don't like or wear pale pink, pale green, light (or even dark) brown, apricot, white, cream, & the other colours filling the shops. I found one top in a dark mauve which I liked, but the boat neckline was so wide & out of shape there was no way I could look at myself in it, so why subject others to the sight?

Nor do I like most prints (& have you seen the way THEY are mixing totally unrelated prints!!!), & I won't wear sleeveless tops, either - if I didn't wear them in my 20s or 30s or 40s why would I want to wear them in my 50s? Why are the 'Plus' sizes ranges full of sleeveless tops?

One thing I have no trouble with is trousers/jeans - I don't wear them either.

and another thing - where are the cool materials for Sydney's humid summer - crappy polyesters & other artificial materials abound.

good thing I have about 20 silk shirts to go with my existing cotton & new (polyester & rayon) skirts.

I was rather taken aback by your remark that size 12 women should not wear hip hugger jeans - until, that is, I realised that you write from the USA where everything, they say, is bigger!!

I'm a size 12 and have recently bought myself a size larger jacket (it IS very fitted) in what in the UK is called a size 14. I looked inside and it is labelled US size 10. So am I a size 8?

Confused

What I neglected to mention was that I do wear jeans for a purpose, not as a fashion statement. Good denim is still the toughest material going, it hides various indelible stains well and I need them for the work around here.

The pockets are next to useless or uncomfortable when stuffed with screws, nails, hoof picks and such, when stooping or crouching, so I also wear shirts with button down flaps or pockets to stop stuff from spilling out when bending over. I tried wearing coveralls but they are a pain in the ass when nature calls.

I haven't bought a pair of jeans retail, in more than 20 years, as our local Sally Ann always carries a huge array in very fine shape and I've no problem with wearing last year's or decade's style.

Fortunately, during the day, I deal with our customers via phone or computer. although at any social function, no matter how well turned out I endeavour to be, I'm usually recognizable, not by fashion, but by the various slivers, stains, calluses and broken nails on my hands.

I consider myself really fortunate to still have the capacity to mix strenuous physical work and the ability to use my mind for other things and also be of an age, where I no longer have to be part of a meat market and worry what anyone thinks of the shape of my ass.........now if I could just find my waist somewhere. LOL

According to this Online conversion. US 14=UK 16

Kat, you said "Today's size 14 is more like yesterday's 16/18." Didn't you mean the opposite? 14 used to fit, now you have to wear 16.

It's always seemed like the jeans size that fit was larger than others. They just seem to run small.

True story of conversation this week. The daughter of a good friend is getting a degree in fashion design. Her goal is to design lingerie for full-figured women. She cannot do this as her senior project. She must do her designs for some small bust-less 'college standard' shape that doesn't really need foundation garments anyway.

If that's the figure they are trained to design for, it's no surprise they can't do it for women with real womanly shapes. I think the daughter will do fine, ultimately, since she has the kind of shape she wants to design for.

I have some clothes in my wardrobe that say size 14, some that say size 12 and some that say size 10. And they all fit. I can even (just!) still fit into a summer dress that is labelled size 8. So much for labelling.

And while I agree with much of what has already been said, there is something to admire in having the confidence or chutzpah to wear whatever one likes, with whatever body shape one has, and ignoring the world's opinion!

It just occurred to me that the main reason the fashion industry is pushing low-rise jeans is that with low-rise jeans, they don't have to worry about the size, location or shape (whether level or warped like an old LP) of the waistline.

The closer they can get to "one size fits all," the simpler life is and the higher the profits.

Now, bear in mind this was 20 years ago when I was considerably thinner..... they wouldn't go past my knees and so were blatantly NOT 'one size fits all'.... the shop sent every garment back to the makers and made them size them properly and I got enough credit for 3 pairs of trousers! Had to wait a while before some that fitted came in though!

The only thing that is truly 'one size fits all' is a hug.

Clinton, me lad, that ain't the point! There's wimmen out there--they're everywhere, I swear--who happen to think their men are so bloody fantastic (okay, okay--or they are so bloody rich) they don't care what's drooping off their chests. Just like a guy can have a jones for a gal so humongous that he couldn't care less what she looks like in hip-huggers, hip-waders or if she resembles a hippo.

Now rabbits on the other hand--don't get me STARTED.

Actually, in a bell curve distribution ( which is what is commonly seen in most "rankings") a very few rise to the top, a very few fall to the bottom, and most are in the middle.

And, of course, beauty is a relative thing- Each of us have our own standards, based on culture, preference, and other factors. As I have stated before, I prefer women who have curves in places that models don't have places.

Today's fashion casualty, spotted in the Rideau Centre (downtown Ottawa shopping arcade) on my way to work at 0830 hr:

Black girl with a gorgeous buxom figure, arrayed in (from the top):
- a US Army-style camouflage cap;
- an incredibly teeny-tiny tank top in US Army camouflage print edged with (get this) baby pink piping;
- pink lace bra straps showing under said teeny-tiny tank top;
- skin-tight Lycra-assisted capri pants in sparkling white; and
- winkle-picker ankle-strap sandals with four-inch heels.

The outfit was obviously styled carefully and intended knock the eye out at 10 metres. Worked on me -- and I'm a stodgy old lady editor!

Here I am, fashion victim all my life, also rabid feminist. Much as I'm aware of image manipulation of women and changing sizes etc, I love colour, textiles, shape, and I'll wear what I bloody well like!!! I am also surrounded by women, many of them my dear friends and glorious and beautiful women, who have muffins hanging over, cracky pants, massive cleavage, and they don't care either. They wear what they bloody like!! I hate it when people snigger and laugh at older women as a consequence of THEIR OWN narrow minded insecurity (if you'll pardon me) because it is so hurtful to people who just wanna be happy in their own skin. Women (and men) of a certain age, have probably been through enough stuff to have a bit of wisdom and are intelligent enough to make choices. Ah, fashions both fun and a problem but people, whoever they are, have the right to be who they wanna be with a bit of fun or with a bit of love. Aren't we all a bit fragile as humans, and many of us can be completely destroyed by a look or a snigger at particular times because we aren't fitting into the (male) stereotype of size 8 and 20. Good on you size 8's and 20 - look as gorgeous as you can and be happy with it, but also good on you all of us older ladies who also look gorgeous for who we are and how we are. Wear those crop tops and low rises and let everything hang out if that's what you need to do. Stick your butts, your cracks, your cleavage and your muffin tops into everyone's faces and let them cope. You're gorgeous and I for one luv ya for it! With a big kissXXX

Size is a relative thing. A tall, well-built woman in a 12 or a 14 (US size) isn't necessarily overweight. Frame size has a lot to do with it too.

I believe women of any size can dress in flattering clothes; and what's flattering on one is not necessarily flattering on the other. That being said, though, it's true that most retailers aren't too savvy when it comes to clothes for plus-sized women. That's unfortunate, because they want to look good too.

As far as jeans go, nowadays they all pretty much look like they've been run over by a truck. I prefer jeans that aren't all beat up when I buy them, but there aren't too many choices.

Anyhow, I'm over 30. I have a pair of hip-huggers. I don't spill out over the top. :-P

"hurtful to people who just wanna be happy in their own skin"
If you ARE happy in your own skin, you won't CARE what I think about it... If you do care, then you probably aren't, no matter how much you think you are...
I've found that no matter how 'together' people are, including me, we are all connected to each other and internalise lots of stuff that impacts. In other words, in my humble opinion, we all do care because humanity has a gentleness and a fragility to it as well as a toughness and an 'I don't care-ness'. What would one call it - 'family of man (woman)'? 'tree of life'? 'no-one be an island'? Silly things like clothing does matter - it's our face to the world. Woman cop it worse I think because there are such stereotypes going on, but men also get it nowadays with the 'bee-oo-diful pecs and buns' crap. In the most good-humoured of ways I am simply saying leave people to be what they wanna be and celebrate the diversity and silliness of all of us. As a great(!!) Australian boxer said, "I luv yoos all". And ain't we all marvelous, particularly Giok and Sandra 'cos they flatter me and I will in return - "Yoos is gorgeous". I remember seeing Sandra at St. Albans festival and hadda tell her how grand and stately and just glorious she looked. For what she was wearing but also 'cos she was being 'her'. xx all (it's Saturday, sunny and I'm going to town so feeling damn good and in love with the world)

I once knew a very tall woman (6') who dressed in long flowing clothes (pants, vast, coat) & surprised us all by saying she was size 20 & 20 stone (14 pounds in a stone = 280lb). She looked magnificent, and wouldn't have made the same effect is she had worn many of the styles deemed "suitable" by the fashion industry for her size.

I have a colleague who is about 5'10" & wears size 16 (same as me) unbelievable as it may seem, I guess it's her extra 3" of height cos she's certainly not carrying any extra weight.

LtS, LOL!

My biggest frustration shopping for clothes these days is that more and more retail outlets stock only over-priced clothing made and designed, very poorly, in China. I've always liked hip-hugging flares, and I do look ok in them, but I ask you - why put those stupid-looking useless tiny pockets/flaps/stitching/studs all over the butt of people's jeans?

Is it because most Chinese people don't have much butt to begin with, so they want to accent what they do have?

All I can say is that even though I wear a size 7/8 these days (what used to be called a size 9/10 or even 11/12 when I was a teen - why IS that????) the poor designs make my butt look HUGE.

Or at least I think so!

So I try to find stuff made in Canada. More pricey, but much more intelligently designed, with better quality materials and workmanship as well.

On the upside, I'm spending a lot less on clothes these days. It's getting harder and harder to find anything made in Canada, even from traditionally Canadian retailers - thanks to China, Walmart, 'free trade' etc etc etc. So I've learned to make do with less.

Britain recently banned a whole heap of things made in China, notably underwear.... many shops were forecasting that they would go out of business because they were not able to buy in the cheap Chinese products and sell it on.

I too, am spending less on clothes. I seem to have everything in my wardrobe that I need (and many more I don't), and if I need trousers, I make them. Somehow, they don't seem to make trousers in my shape.
