Perhaps you have an older version
of RealAudio player [3.0]
The newer 5.0 version is required

I do not have any way to down load sound-music etc. What I need are the words and where the music appears in print, or where the words are in print Sorry to be a pain in the neck, however I very much appreciate all you are doing Allan

Terribly unPC in any age, but as I learned it:

DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT'S FEEDING YOU

Last night as I lay sleeping,
A wonderful dream came to me.
I saw Uncle Sammy weeping
For his children from over the sea.
They had come to him friendless and starving.
He took them into his fold.
Now when in trouble he needs you,
You'll have to remember your oath.

CHORUS: If you don't like your Uncle Sammy,
Then go back to your home o'er the sea,
To the land where e'er you came,
Whatever be its name,
But don't be ungrateful to me.
If you don't like the stars in Old Glory,
If you don't like the Red, White, and Blue,
Then don't act like the cur in the story.
Don't bite the hand that's feeding you.

From a Gene Autry 78 ~ RIP [Maybe not!]
Yuck ~ I'm so SORRY!

THanks every one for helping Gene,Joe Offer and Riggy Rackin I just had a call from my musician friend who actually has the words and Music for the song Actually there are 2 verses and the chorus. It appears in "THe Legioneers Song Book Pub. 1931 the Title as "Dont bite the Hand Thats Feeding You" Words by Thomas Hoier Music by Jimmie Moran Now theres one that I must learn and sing at the next House Hoot. Nothing like being a stone crusher.

Allan, if it was published in 1931, it's different from the one Gene linked to. If you get a chance to post the lyrics in this thread, we'd sure appreciate it. If the thread disappears, put bite in the filter and set it for 90 days or so, and it will turn up. Thanks.

Wow! This is so neat! My great-uncle Mac used to sing this to us kids . I always thought it was so neat the way he could just sit down and tell old stories and sing old songs we'd never heard of and haven't heard much of since. This seems like such a clean and friendly site. Thanks to all of you!

THANKS for the info on that song. Our Uncle Mac was one of a kind. And having these lyrics is great. If you ever find the other verse to it please post. Again, many thanks to all of you.

Wil & Graci - were you able to hear the RealAudio recording Gene provided above? Here it is again (click, please). I don't like the song at all myself, but I have to admire Gene for finding it.

A fascinating song.
Perhaps there are versions in other countries that say
"We don't like you, Uncle Sammy
Go back to your home o'er the sea?"

Or is it another one-way system? Puts me in mind of a discussion in another place, where British folk performers are discussing how awkward it is to get a permit to come and perform in the USA when you have the booked gigs - Canada etc are no problem.
Do US performers have real problems getting the OK to come and perform here in the UK?

This song is older than I thought. Lyrics below copied from FirstWorldWar.com. That page also has 2 audio files: one by Billy Murray from 1915, and one by Walter van Brunt from 1916.

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music also has the sheet music.

The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites also has a recording of Gene Autry's WW2-era version, on Salute to Veterans Page 1. Autry doesn't sing the second verse.

DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT'S FEEDING YOU
(Words, Thomas Hoier. Music Jimmie Morgan. 1915)

Last night, as I lay a-sleeping,
A wonderful dream came to me.
I saw Uncle Sammy weeping
For his children from over the sea.
They had come to him, friendless and starving,
When from tyrant's oppression they fled,
But now they abuse and revile him,
Till at last in just anger he said:

CHORUS: "If you don't like your Uncle Sammy,
Then go back to your home o'er the sea,
To the land from where you came,
Whatever be its name,
But don't be ungrateful to me!
If you don't like the stars in Old Glory,
If you don't like the Red, White and Blue,
Then don't act like the cur in the story;
Don't bite the hand that's feeding you!"

"You recall the day you landed,
How I welcomed you to my shore?
When you came here empty handed,
And allegiance forever you swore?
I gathered you close to my bosom.
Of food and of clothes you got both.
So, when in trouble, I need you,
You will have to remember your oath." CHORUS

Well, apparently there are people who like this song. Somebody sent me a link to a YouTube Recording today. The song is every bit as nasty today, as it was in 1915.
