JIm M Subject: RE: BS: Songs for Cats From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Jun 01 - 07:57 AM A cat song that did NOT get on the Garrison Keiler cat song CD is "Cat-town Races," which was on A Prairie Home Companion in the very early '80s. Anyone have the words? I learned the "All Around My Hat" parody from Judy Cook: "I'm going to kill my cat And smother him with my pillow. He pissed upon my hat And for that he has to pay. But I'm not in to cruelty So when I'm through dissecting it I'm going to send the pieces to the ASPCA." I last sang it after a spate of "Don't Pet the Dog," "Please Send My Dog Home, Uncle Sam," and a host of others of that ilk. Bat Goddess |

I vaguely remember this song. It's about a pair of cats chasing each other around the house late at night, jumping on the bed and awakening the humans. |

And all I can remember is a few fragments of lines: Cat town races, sing this song: Meow, Meow! (drawing a blank on the rest of the verse[s]) Chorus: Gonna run all night! Gonna sleep all day! Up on the bed jumps the bobtail cat. Up on the bed jumps the grey! |

13 Apr 15 - 06:43 AM (#3701522) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cat Town Races (Garrison Keillor) From: CapriUni Some clarification and context: A Prairie Home Companion is a live performance radio program, loosely modeled after, and gently parodying, radio shows of the 1930's and '40's, including (among other things) spoofs of commercial sponsors. Back in the early 1980's, one of those sponsors was Bertha's Kitty Boutique in the 'Dales, and they would advertise products intended to appeal to cat owners. Occasionally, the ads would feature samples from the "Songs of the Cat Songbook," which were all spoofs of famous songs rewritten with a cat theme. "Cat Town Races," a spoof (naturally) of "Camptown Races," was one of those songs. |

And I've had my hands full since this first appeared in 2005, so I actually haven't pursued it. (I'm chasing way too many things!) Learning more of Curmudgeon's repertoire has been my priority lately. Linn |

So ... using the Gggle search engine took me to one varied version and nothing more. This is copied from a site called lawyers guns and money. Comment section, not even a proper thread post. The cats in our house sing this song meow-meow meow-meow Cat Town Races all night long meow, meow-meow-meow MEOW Going to run all night! Going to sleep all day! 22 Aug 21 - 02:00 PM (#4117498) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cat Town Races (Garrison Keillor) From: keberoxu Nor does this song appear on the studio recording called "Songs of the Cat" in which Garrison Keillor is joined by a symphony orchestra and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. There are other songs, mostly with classical tunes, like Sheep may safely graze, which has become Cats may safely sleep (I heard Vern Sutton sing that one on the radio during one live broadcast.) '... two little cats are fast a-sleep ...' |
