Jim Craig at Hogeye Music in Evanston, Ill. spent some time with me. Suggested some options. Suggested a particular brand of medium string that was just what I wanted on the long neck 5. Suggested a set of Grover Sta-Tites with Butter Bean Knobs for the Martin. Quoted a good price plus shipping and they got here in Central New York with in 7 business days. Jim did just what I asked for in a timely manner. I can't be more pleased so I thought I should let you all know. Jim is also a performing musician which may help to explain the great service. Don |

His singing voice, to my ears, is the best to make itself known in the Chicago area folk scene over the last half of the old 20th century. And his guitar style is great also. Who is your "regular tech?" It's been thirty years since I lived in Chicago but when I was living and playing there I never found anyone I completely trusted. If you go on the Martin website, you will see he IS the factory authorized tech in the Chicago area. The guy is a master repair person. He has a shop in his basement and is the guy many stores in the area, including Guitar Center farm their stuff out to. He is excellent on bridge repairs, caving-in tops, and neck sets. Fair and honest. Ask Jim Craig of Hogeye. He knows him. |

Nancy Dow, who used to own a club called the Barbarossa, would introduce him on stage as,"the most beautiful voice in Chicago". One of my proudest moment as a performer was the first time I scored a weekend gig there opening for Jim. I haven't heard him sing in years. Prospect and I actually drive right through Hampshire on my way to her place. The thing with techs is you really have to know someone whose opinion you trust, who has used that tech, and then sometimes that isn't even enough. I've discovered the hard way that being trained in the Martin factory, having years of experience, and being the area's "Martin certified" tech doesn't necessarily mean the guy will make good decisions about your guitar. Now my 1970 D-41 needs its first neck reset and another fret job. I need a new (higher) saddle and maybe a bridge plate. I think the last guy (Martin certified) may have replaced the bridge plate. My guitar was "voiced" by Randy Wood, then of GTR in Nashville, in 1971, a year before I bought it. I don't know whether Randy's voicing including doing anything with the bridge plate. Our local Martin-certified tech may have just returned it to factory specs. My guitar still sounds great and still makes people envious but, to my ear, it's been "off" since it's last hospitalization. |
