(If you know the shaggy dog story - pardon the pun!)

www.xxxchurch.com

has organized 'National Porn Sunday'

Apparently many Religious Pastors are Porn Addicts!

I should have done this as a song challenge thread - there MUST be a song on this...

I wouldn't doubt it. Porn is a problem in our society in general. I don't remember any church 'rules' against it and suspect that many Christians have this 'dirty little secret'.

On second thought, maybe porn falls under the category of coveting you neighbor's wife.

I also wonder how much this 'dirty little secret' has to do with repressed sexuality in the society of the church.

Peoples reaction to porn is sometimes a problem. Porn comes in 1279 different gradations, from genteel erotica to stupid, hateful garbage, and the truth is, with the internet/WWW is it here to stay in forms and quantities barely dreamed of 50 years ago! (Isn't Playboy about 50 now?) I knew a guy who worked in a bookstore 30 years ago, and he sometimes had 'real' porn he got in the form of cheap, badly printed paperback book from a traveling salesman...now it pops up on your computer, if you're not careful!

There is little to suggest that Christians are more or less subject to lustful desires than anyone else, so 'porn' will appeal to them...or not...based on many factors other than their religion. The only issue is whether, because of their religion, they are expected to feel guilty and pretend to avoid exposure.

Pornography? No good to me, I haven't got a pornograph.

The harm (to the extent that there is harm) in sexually explicit material lies not in the fact of its sexual nature but in the capitalist profit motive that leads, in the cases it does, to coercion to participate.

I couldn't have said it better, Richard!

Good point, Richard, but I do think there also more involved. As Bill mentioned, there is definitely some "stupid, hateful garbage" out there. The greatest downside of the internet is that many developing young people are getting substantial doses of the stuff. If they have parents who are very open and effecive in helping them to understand and evaluate such stuff when they encounter it, the harm should be minimal; if not, I shudder to think.

Please don't take me as wanting to go back to the world of Hayes or Comstock codes. Fact is, I'm a card carrying nudist. I would hate to be the one to write any relevant code; how many of us would be able to agree on exactly where to draw lines. I guess I just have to say that I wouldn't mind living in a world where profit motives and sick appetites didn't lead to the profliferation of degrading and dehumanizing crap. Maybe sometime I'll find that I have something more like an actual constructive suggestion to make about this.
