Gamble Rogers drowned
10/10/1991
(b.1/31/1937)

while trying to rescue a Canadian tourist from a heavy surf
at Flagler Beach State Recreation Area, Florida.

The Park was renamed by the Florida Legislature in his honor.

some info at FL Div. of Cultural Affairs: Florida Artists Hall of Fame
and see Gamble Rogers Folk Festival and Gamble Rogers Memorial Foundation

        I remember Gamble Rogers
        He was a gentleman with a guitar
        He's gone on a little further now
        A little deeper in the stars
        He went down into the water
        To help to save a drowning man
        And he left this world, holding out his hand.

                "Song for Gamble" recorded by Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen;
                Words & Music: Steve Gillette & John Charles Quarto
ALSO:
Believe it or not a transcript of an amazing radio conversation between a US naval ship and Canadian authorities was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on Oct. 10, 1995. I know it's true because I received it in an e-mail from 75 people just yesterday. Even the US navy post the story at its official website. Navy FAQ

Happy? No, I was very sad when Gamble drowned. He was a great performer and a very nice person.
