10 Oct 05 - 09:31 AM (#1580053) Subject: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: Nick I'm going to be visiting and staying near to Warrington (Croft actually but that's rather small) during the week of 22nd to 29th October and would appreciate some suggestions of places to go. Singarounds would suit me best especially those which are fairly catholic in their tastes (ie a completely unaccompanied traditional evening I might find a bit much - I tend to prefer a mix) Having a look on the web there seems to be something within reach for most nights of the week - eg the Wigan folk club looks good on Tuesday/Thursday; the one at Heatley,Lymm also does; and the Runcorn Monday night also does. Wigan's about 12miles and Runcorn is about 15miles and that's about the travelling distance I would prefer - though I'd go a little further if something is that recommended. Any recommendations and some indication of what the places are like would be much appreciated - something friendly and welcoming would be much more attractive than cold and cliquey (does cold and cliquey exist? - of course, not..!) |

10 Oct 05 - 11:24 AM (#1580140) Subject: RE: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: Nick Just a touch over the 15 miles limit I'd set myself but a damn fine bit of thread drift and self promotion may I say! I am rather tied to staying in the local area as my mum has just had her shoulder replaced. Me disappearing off defeats the purpose somewhat, but a couple of hours in the evening having a sing locally keeps everyone happy. Give our regards to Lucy and Paul who come and sing in our local pub reasonably often in term time :) |

10 Oct 05 - 12:56 PM (#1580228) Subject: RE: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: GUEST,John J Hi Nick, Warrington eh? Hmmm. Well then. There's Songs in the Snug every other Wednesday at the Railway at Heatley, near Lymm. Free (mainly unacc, trad British) At the same pub in the upstairs room there's a folk club every Thursday evening. Around £1 if it's a singers night, rather more for a guest night. There's also a rather good music session downstairs in the Snug the same evening. Free (Mainly Irish, but also Scottish & English). The Ring-o-Bells in Warrington hosts a good sing on Sunday evenings. BTW the beer in both these pubs is excellent. It's a shame you're not in the area the following week (Souling Play week). I'll dig out some more info and PM you. Cheers, John |

Free. Also free beer if you sing or play. OK I know Trafalgar Day is really 21st October, but Mobberley's a bit behind the times. John (reaching for his tin hat) |

However I realise that Nick is very limited to time. One of the big problems with a post on a thread, you cannot remove it after. |

11 Oct 05 - 08:18 AM (#1580878) Subject: RE: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: GUEST,Joan from Wigan (in the library) Thanks to PennyBlack for the plug for Wigan Folk Club, which I organise. We run twice a week, Tuesdays at the Fox & Goose, and Thursdays at the Seven Stars. See Wigan Folk Club for addresses and small maps. We run on a singaround basis at both venues, an open music policy with a very eclectic mix of performers / performances - anything goes, and you'll be most welcome. While you're on the folk club website, click through to 'Folkal Point', which gives listings of what's on folkwise in the region. Joan |

11 Oct 05 - 09:05 AM (#1580909) Subject: RE: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: Nick Thank you for all the help so far and suggestions - if there are any more by all means add them on, it will be useful for me and perhaps others. At the moment I'm thinking of going to some or all of these depending on time etc: Ring O' Bells in Warrington on the Sunday Wigan either Tuesday or Thursday (or both) (I'd already had it in my mind to come last time I was over when I found the site and all your very comprehensive information, Joan) Railway at Heatley also at some point Fleetwood is a tempt but we will see. It's about 50 odd miles. Thanks for the link, Mr Happy, most useful. Chester is about 39 miles from where I am so it may be a bit far but the lists were useful. We'll see. So just Monday, Friday and Saturday to find recommendations for!! The lists and links are really good but there is something about a prsonal recommendation that is somehow better and conveys so much more. Thanks |

11 Oct 05 - 11:00 AM (#1580990) Subject: RE: Warrington(ish) w/c 22/10-clubs to visit From: Nick Like putting a jigsaw together isn't it? I reckon to be passing Swinton on the way from Yorkshire at sometime between 11 and 11 on the Saturday and sense the car will need to lurch off at the Swinton exit to let the engine cool down after it's trip across the motorway (so I'll be tekking a sken) I'll try the Singaround in the lounge at some point. May see you there. Are you the Dave W, the Dave P or neither? And Runcorn sounds good too. |
