10 Oct 05 - 08:57 PM (#1580601) Subject: BS: PappaGator Alive and Well... From: Bobert Well, well, well... Gotta a call from P-Gator today... As many know he escaped Katrina and is now in Jersey takin' care of his eldery mother but... ...as I write this he and his yougnins are on their way back to N.O. to see if there's anything salvagable from his old digs... I offered to let him stay at the old Ford Dealership which has a living loft in it but he and the youngins is gonna push on into the night and see how far they can get... Hope to hook up wid him on the return trip but it's prolly gonna be right in the middle of the Getaway???... But he's fine and it's jus' a metter of time before his gator-self is back scratchin' in the catbox... Bobert |

10 Oct 05 - 10:56 PM (#1580670) Subject: RE: BS: PappaGator Alive and Well... From: katlaughing I sure hope he finds his guitar in okay condition. If not, he should PM Night Owl about restoration..her instruments all burnt up and, with Catspaw's and other 'catters' advice, she partially restored a dulcimer...also was able to ressurect several old albums from fire-fighting water damage. Thanks, Bobert, for keeping us informed! kat |

I have another friend headed back to New Orleans soon to see if there is anything she can salvage - but I doubt anyone can repair a Harley-Davidson that's been underwater. Or a Taylor guitar for that matter. |

31 Oct 05 - 05:58 PM (#1594452) Subject: RE: BS: PappaGator Alive and Well... From: Wesley S Another thread mentioned that not only was his guitar in good shape when it was found but it was also in tune. His basement is a mass of mold however. The water came up to his front step but his house was just high enough to avoid major damage. That's how I remember it. |

31 Oct 05 - 06:29 PM (#1594488) Subject: RE: BS: PappaGator Alive and Well... From: PoppaGator Wesley's got it right. Sorry I never touched base with Bobert. Luray is right on my route between NO and NJ, but it's an awkward place to make a stop because it's nowhere near the halfway mark ~ much closer to the northern end of the trip than to New Orleans. I'm off on a second trip early tomorrow morning, driving down, working on the house for about a week, then flying back and leaving my car in New Orleans. (That way we'll have one car at each of our two "home" locations.) (Maybe I can make a quick daytime visit to Bobert tomorrow afternoon ~ maybe. If not, I will have missed my chance; can't make a stopoverat his placewhen flying!) Peggy and I will then take turns traveling south to continue working and to keep an ear to the ground regarding such issues as when electricity and gas will be restored to our area, etc. One of us has to stay with Mom at all times, of course, and we'll definitely spend at least a little bit of time with both of us in New Jersey, but it looks like we'll have to do a lot of traveling, and that we need to maintain a nearly-constant one-at-a-time presence in New Orleans if we hope to rebuild and move back as quickly as we want to. Since our main floor is pretty much unaffected, we should be able to move back home sooner and more easily than most. It still promises to be a daunting task, if only because the city as a whole, the entire community, is so drastically impacted. It's certainly a strange place to be right now, populated largely by insurance adjusters, federal employees, and National Guardsmen ~ no tourists, and not even very many locals. Plus which, the entire landscape is dead and gray and there is a pervasive scent of mold everywhere. Weird. People are still carousing and having fun, better than anywhere else on the planet, despite everything. I saw an article in this morning's local NJ paper about a Halloween parade in the French Quarter this past weekend. I'm sure that there will be more festivities tonight, on the actual date of 10/31. More later. Just got up and running on DSL, but tonight I have to pack and prepare to travel, and of course while in New Orleans for the next week or so, I won't be reading and posting online messages ~ I'll be performing heavy labor at a job site with no utilities (i.e., no internet access, among many other things). I'll be flying back here on Tuesday 11/8 ~ at which time and for the following week or two I should be able to catch up a bit on my on-line psuedo-life. Pops |

01 Nov 05 - 12:58 PM (#1595087) Subject: RE: BS: PappaGator Alive and Well... From: Ebbie I had an odd phone call yesterday morning. The phone rang at 6:45 AM; it was a man calling from Mississippi who is coming to Alaska for sightseeing and salmon fishing next year and wanted some advice on what charter company would be best to contract with. Eventually it developed that he was going into the Anchorage area and then on into the Brooks Range. (I should have asked him where he would be if he drove 600 miles from his home in Mississippi.*G* Alaska is a big state.) Before I discovered he was not coming to southeastern Alaska I did mildly suggest that he call the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau and gave him the number but cautioned, But don't call yet. It is only 7 o'clock here. He said, unabashed, I think I thought you would have 24-hour staff. (This is a small house museum and I am the caretaker/docent) Then he got to talking about Katrina. He noted that everyone talks about the damage it caused in New Orleans but, he said, the damage there was nothing compared with what it did on the Mississippi Gulf coast (He lives in northern Miss.) He credits Mississippi's governor with containing the disaster with no greater loss of life than it got. Then he got to comparing the local governments of Lousiana and Mississippi. Suddenly, in mid-sentence, the call was disconnected but no dial tone came on for at least a minute. (No breathing sounds, either. *G*) What keeps a dial tone from coming on when a call is disconnected? Oh- it just occurred to me - someone could have hit the Mute button. Is there absolutely no sound when Mute is pushed? Oh, well, it got me out of bed and my day started. |
