In the early 1960s I knew and recorded BILL CHIPMAN in Chicago. He was from Senath, Missouri and was a fine country/folk singer. Wrote some good songs too.

I'd like to find Bill because I want to include a song I learned from his singing on a forthcoming CD. He may have written it!

"Mary Charlotte Ann McGhee" is the name of the song!

Thanks folks,

Art Thieme

Art –

I did a brief Google on "Bill Chipman" and didn't come up with anything that looked too promising.

I did find a Bill Chipman in Greenville Mississippi, which ordinarily I wouldn't think was close enough to be likely it was the same guy, but his web page says he's the "family genealogist" researching lines for "Chipman" and some others, so there's a chance he may know something about your Bill - maybe. He does look to be at least 50's or 60's, from his photo at the site, so he's old enough to have been around in the '60s.

If he's like most people who are into genealogy, even if he doesn't know anything to help you he might be happy to have your recollections of someone with the right family name. Most who admit an interest in that sort of "family stuff" are happy to see random contacts.

There is an email address to contact him on his site, which I won't repeat here since the spam harvesters might get it.

The only "Chicago area" hit I got was a Bill Chipman, listed as a "comedian" appearing in the Passavant Follies, apparently a (mostly volunteer/amateur) benefit show for the Passavant Area Hospital, (Illinois). Unfortunately I can't tell from the only picture he's in whether he's old enough to have been around in the 60s, but quite a few of the performers were "age superior" (like me). A nurse, Janet Chipman, in the same show looks too young, but of course he might have had a daughter or other relatives laying about?.

Nothing very helpful, but we're thinkin' on it. Hopefully someone who knows more of musicians will be along.

John

John,

Thank you. That might be the fellow I'm looking for. One of his songs I recall went:

I'm just a rebel man,
Tryin' to make a living if I can,
I'm from the south,
I'm from the south.

This city life ain't for me,
Going back to Tennessee,
I'm from the south,
Yes, I'm from the south.

It went on from there... Maybe he did go back to where he felt more comfortable.
