Perhaps this is a bit of a nerve but is it possible to get the notation for Mr Tambourine Man by Dylan for free?

CAPO +1or2?

First Note: A Intro:
|: A D (E D) A D E :|

D             E               A             D
Hey! Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
          A               D    Bm       E
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
D             E             A             D
Hey! Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
         A             D               Bm    E   A   (D   A)
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.

         D                E          A                D
Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into the sand.
A                D             A               D
Vanished from my hand, left me blindly here to stand
    Bm          E
but still not sleeping!
    D         E             A            D      A             D
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet I have no one to meet.
         A               D          Bm       E
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

D          E             A             D
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
    A                D          A                     D
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel the grip,
    A                D
my toes too numb to step,
      A            D       Bm    E
wait only for my boot heels to be wandering
      D          E             A             D
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
   A            D
Into my own parade
            A               D       Bm          E
Cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it

            D                   E                A               D
Though you might hear laughin' spinnin' swingin' madly across the sun
          A          D                A             D
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
    A          D          Bm          E
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'
    D                  E         A                D
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
          A            D                A               D
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind
            A          D
I wouldn't pay it any mind,
             A             D    Bm         E
It's just a shadow you're seein' that he's chasing

       D          E                   A                D
Then take me dissapearin' through the smoke rings of my mind
          A               D       A                D
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves
      A                   D       A             D
The haunted, frightended trees out to the windy beach
      A                D      Bm    E
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
          D                E               A               D
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand wavin' free
      A             D          A               D
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
          A          D          A               D
With all memory and fate drive deep beneath the waves
       A             D    Bm      E
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Thanks Fullerton and thanks Chico. What I am realy after is the music notation - 5 lines and those quavers and things. They seem a lot harder to find for free.

Trouble is it's not much of a notation song, and most guitars dont read standard music (chords or tabs)

True enough Chico. I want to play it as a jig, honest, and wanted to get the dots as right as is possible now that my hearing is giving up

I am playing the mandola while I can. When the rest of my memory goes perhaps I will move on to drums. Please don't send the drum police round.

i hears mr. tambourine man sung at a concert lst night
by some of the original members of teh Byrds, who were
among the first to record it from a demo tape of Dylan.

Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen are touring these days.

There is a midi file of Mr Tambourine man. You should be able to import the midi file into any number of things and print off the notes. If you haven't pm me and I'll email you something that will.

I don't know whether the notes and timings are right however as I don't have earphones at work

look on the Acoustic Guitar site - Roger was on the cover a few months ago and I think there was an internet lesson on the jingle-jangle style that may give you some ideas.
hillman and pederson will also be on Folkscene the first Sunday in Nov. -- set your recorder for that one! and you might ask the question on Roger's blog.

I have seen the sheet music for Mr Tambourine Man. I've got it somewhere in the loft.

But I'm not going to dig it out cos I remember it was a very poor quality imprint.

The song has verses that are of different lengths. This is rather unusual for many song writers, but not for Dylan. I detect Guthrie's influence here personally.

That affects the sheet music cos I remember it had a phenomenally complex repeat pattern when printed - it was an a real maze.

Piano arrangements for popular songs in the sixties was often very poor - they bear little resemblance to the original song and they often printed in the wrong key.

I mention this because if your search is successful, you may be disappointed with what you find.

Try playing arpeggios of the chords played above - play 8, arpeggiated notes for each chord. Kind of fingerpicking on the piano!

Hope this helps.

One of the nice biggening/intermediate pieces to WORK OUT - "By Ear" and do a three key change with.

Fun, simple, easyily recognizable, transitions are a snap.

Work it through ...(three weeks max) and soon others will be seeking you are the new gurhu for the zoo.

G'day Les,

... How hard can it be for a player of a melody instrument (eg, mandola) to pick out the melody of a Dylan song?!?

I just picked up my button-accordion - looked at the words - and played through it note perfect ... and that's based on something like a 40 year-old memory of the tune.

I could write it out in standard dots ... but it's much better for your musical soul to pick it out yourself!

Regard(les)s,

Bob
