What does a mudcateer look like? (truth opt)

Subject: What does a mudcateer look like? (truth opt)

Now that we know age sex & occupation statistics, how about giving a verbal picture of ourselves. I'd be really intrigued to see how my mental images of various mudcateers measure up to reality (well, virtuality then). Honesty entirely optional. On the offchance that anyone will participate I'll start off.

I am :

5ft 1 and a half, and compensate for lack of height by concentrating on width. Darkish brown hair with a brushing of grey - long on top (usually plaited) and very short sides & back. Big nose (aristocratic I like to think), reasonable cheekbones & orangey-green eyes. Can't dress smartly to save my life, bizarre taste in clothes and no idea of how to co-ordinate. Always wear black eye-liner 'batwings', and when going out tend to wear yellow&pink&turquose&orange eyeshadow all at once. Overall effect is 'old hippy'. Still, it makes me happy :)

I am 1.94m, 99kg (6 feet 4 inches, about 220 lbs for those who still have not yet learned the metric system), blond hair turning grey (but falling out with amazing speed), blue eyes, a full beard (I am too lazy to shave), my nose is a bit longer than I would like...

I strongly prefer jeans and sweater to suits (luckily I don't have to wear suits at work, or I would have to look for another job ;-)

Well, I suppose this sort of thread is what generated Art's "condom" thread, but I think it's a natural inclination for us to want to have a broader knowledge of the people we've come to like so much.
People stop me on the street and tell me I look remarkably like Steve Martin, so I suppose I must. I'm 5'8" tall and believe blue jeans and plaid shirts are the ultimate in fashion.

You can look at the Folk-Legacy web page for inescapable evidence of my antiquity. On the other hand, looking through the "custom cassettes" part of the site will show how "time has made a change in me." The picture there, which still appears on our first Folk-Legacy recording (dutifully catalogued as EGO-30), was taken in about 1965. Rick Fielding teases me about it. But then, he's a lot younger than I and still has a headful of hair!

I'm six foot four and about 250 (sorry, almost too old to learn metric). Full grey beard and longish brown hair. Dress casual just like my life. It is interesting to know about the folks on Mudcat but after we exhaust all thses personal threads lets get back to the music. Are there new trends among the younger players? Is there more interest in traditional music in some areas and not others? How are older performers compensating for time? I'm fifity and starting to get really stiff in my left hand. Anybody find ways to prevent this? I'm also moving to Champaign/Urbana, IL. Any Mudcatters around there to play music with or just talk folk? Dan

Seven & half foot long, seven inches between the eyes. My youthful yellow banding long ago gave way to a deep charcoal, but my belly skin is still white. Have most of the ridges on my back & tail, though they're a bit worn from scrapes with all the old bulls. My tongue & throat are a delightfully ghastly death white, teeth are yellow, except for the one that's missing thanks to a waterskier who wouldn't let go the damn rope!

Well, I look forward to Bill D's photos. I think he caught me trying out some slide guitar licks in a workshop.

I am 5' 9" and 330 lbs. (Should I be Big Roger?). I sport a moustache and goatee. I wear glasses. They've been tri-focals for a few years (couldn't read the CD packages anymore, arms too short). The glasses, beard and moustache serve to hide my gloriously round face so I am not mistaken for a full moon (forget the wisecrack, Art).

Brown hair, just to the ears. I've gotten a little gray on the sides and my beard is more salt than pepper. Hazel eyes. I smile a good deal and thanks to my dentist it looks like I have all of my teeth.

I have been blessed with a long body and with short arms and legs (inseam 27). This causes me to hold my guitar close to my neck so I can get my arms around to the strings (reminiscent of early New Lost City Ramblers).

The grayer I get, the more I remind people of Burl Ives.

My clothing of choice runs to T-shirts, jeans, and athletic shoes. I am old enough to refer to them as dungarees and sneakers.

Lets see, I am 48, 5'11" 235lbs. I too have a penchant for jeans, flannel, and sweetshirts. I have worn a beard since 1970 and am folically challenged. What folicals I have are a mix of Auburn, brown, and gray. A recent convert to bi-focals, which are no damn good when it comes to the hammered dulcimer. I usually have to buy shirts 2xl because they are the ones that fit my shoulders and are baggy everywhere else. I don't care if my sox match as long as they are warm and clean. Young women at work say I look like their uncle and older women say I look comfortable. I wonder if thats good?

When I was younger and my hair was lon, I looked a little like George Harrison (Abby Road version). Now I'm a little like a relic lost in space. 5 feet 9 (and a half) about 190 lbs. and dropping; thick red-brown hair with a few gray invaders snaking their way in; a moustache grayer still. Execpt for the standard male-pattern thing on the forehead, I still have a full head of hair, as well as a complete set of teeth. Can usually be spotted wearing glasses and a perplexed look.

Well, if I get a great picture taken I'll post the link. Funny you should mention the shower, Joe, because the second photo was taken when I was experimenting with my digital camera... I took the photo in the bathroom mirror, and the shower is right behind me....
The lyrics taped to the shower wall right now are Auld Lang Syne, 5 verses and the chorus, to be sung to the original tune at the end of the Burns performance I will be doing later this month. Has anyone taken my suggestion and taped lyrics to the shower wall? Thermal fax paper stands the test of moisture.

Well, so Sandy Paton thinks I was kidding him about his early "image". Hardly. As anyone who has met the man knows, in his youth he resembled a Greek God. (and one of the good ones, I might add) Today however he looks like a folksinger, which is as it should be.

As to my own appearance, well the full head of hair that Sandy refers to is courtesy of "The Hair Club for Men".

I've tried to reply to Steve Latimer about my radio show, in the significant folkie thread, but the gremlins won't allow me to send it. So Steve, maybe you can find it here. "Acoustic Workshop" is on Monday nights (for 10 years) at 9-10pm. CIUT. 89.5 fm. here in Toronto.

actually there's nothing much to add to what Andreas has written. The respective American acronym is CSICOP (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal) sometimes misnamed Psi-Cop by their opponents. Truth is mandatory, in my book.

I'm 5'6", a bit softer and rounder than I'd like, (but I've recently started running again, so wish me well) with long hair loosely up or free-flowing, as I please. The color of my hair is a tougher question; a long summer spent 100% outdoors made it very blond, but winter darkness is causing darker brown to show at the top. Almond-shaped green eyes, pleasant round face featuring one left-side dimple when I smile. Most days I dress in jeans & v-neck sweaters or T-shirts, but I do have a weakness for fine garb and silly features like huge Dingo boots and strange hats.

For my part, I'm 6 feet tall, about 200 lbs and once had auburn hair. Most of the hair is still there but it's closer to brown these days with nature's condiments sprinkled throughout. My full beard is reminiscent of Art's pictures, but thankfully for him that's where the similarity ends. Shorts and a polo shirt are my favoured dress, and water is my favourite drink since I gave up the booze a couple of years ago. Regards

Depending upon which ID you look at, I range between 5'9 and 5'11. I feel shorter some days. Coffee-grounds-in-the-dishwater blonde (I simply refuse to say, "brown") with blue eyes. The hair is rapidly becoming mixed with a bit of gray. The beard, which I gave up a few years ago was already fairly gray. I am probably about 30 pounds overweight; but am working on reducing my girth so that I don't have such a hard time lugging my body up the hillsides which I so enjoy hiking. Also, my hope is that eventually my canoe won't sit quite so low in the water. I have a "throwaway" guitar which sometimes makes canoe trips with me. No, I don't use it as a spare paddle! I am usually found wearing hiking boots, jeans, and colorful pocket-teeshirts. The pocket thing dates back to my many years of cigarette addiction which ended twenty years ago. But for some reason the pocket is still important to me - sometimes I suppose I use it to hold my glasses which I now wear almost all of the time. Handsome would be a welcome adjective but "well preserved" is what I hear far more often. You could say the same thing about a pickle. I am so average in general appearance that I can easily slip into a crowd and disappear. On the other hand, I probably look like someone you once knew. Often I have strangers come up to me and call me by someone else's name. Sometimes I play along with it ;-)

Was Joe the tall, well-shaped lighthouse or that classy window shot? Surely he couldn't be that relatively normal-looking (albeit nice-)man! We all know that no normal mortal could do so much for so many. We figured he was a computer or, at least, some kind of collective!

Thanks, though!

Ah, my dear Alison, the only part of me that has been pierced is my heart - that happened when I found out you were married, already spoken for.
I would like to make it perfectly clear that I, on the other hand, am NOT married - yet. Maybe soon. One never knows....
But woman who refers to herself as May Best-Offer and says she is my wife is an imposter. She may be perfectly charming, but I haven't met her yet. Before I marry a woman, I prefer to be properly introduced. Sorry, May, no offense intended.

You know that shot of Joe with the reflection in the mirror almost had me fooled, until I recalled an episode of the X-files. The reflection is certainly not part of the same head - I've had the staff at the forensic lab check it out. I don't know why there is a conspiracy in the Mudcat, but well done with the Mr-Nice-Guy-I'm-No-Threat image though.

Hi all,

I've just set up a dinky little "home page" and if you go there you can see what I look like.

http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/Gazebo/8475/

Helen

PS: A "dinky" in Oz language is a little 3-wheeler bike (all right, so it's a trike, not a bike) for toddlers to learn to ride on. I believe the word dinky comes from the Scots language and means "small" (so it was a tautology/unnecessary repetition saying "dinky little").

PS2: The word "dinky" does not have any relationship to the Oz words "dinkum", "fair dinkum", "fair dink" or "dinky-di", which relate to the meaning of "true/truly" and the great Oz tradition of being who you say you are, being trustworthy and sincere, etc, etc.

Team 1: Red Rover, Red Rover, who do you call over ?

Team 2: We call over

The called person leaves Team1 and runs to Team2 who are standing in a line holding hands. Called person charges and tries to break through line - ususally selecting the weakest link in the chain of people. If they succeed in breaking through they can go back to Team1. If not then they must join Team2.

Just under 6 feet and a relatively slim 155 lbs. but somewhat top heavy with much of the weight being located above the shoulders. Moustache since 21. Hair still attached and somewhere between brown and grey depending on what area one focuses. Comfortable in anything from fishing waders to dungarees to slacks to suits.

Since there is now a looming chance that some of us will actually encounter one another, I thought I would revive this thread. By the way, I caught myself in a kind of reverie, reading and re-reading Harpgirls description.

Also, don't miss Frank in the swamps' classic.

If you click Joe Offers pic, it gets very confusing. He looks like either Donny Wahlberg or Chow Yun Fat, far's I can tell.

As for me, I'm 5'8", 175 lbs., blond beard and rather long hair with some new white ones that have started appearing the last year. Will turn (arg) 50 yrs old this October. Have been told I bear a resemblance to Kiefer Sutherland . Could have been worse. Could have been Donald.

Can't wait for Catspaw's description. Also Katlaughing, jo,Ferarra, etc.

Erica: Mt. Holy Smokes, eh?***smile*** We spent three years in Noho and my son's sig. other is a Smithie grad. We all really loved being there, but I was in Noho last June and it looked and seemed much more upscale yuppified than when we last were there in 1993 to visit. we lived there from 1984-1987, on School Street, just around the corner, kinda, from The Academy of Music. How long have you been at Mt. Holyoke?

Well, Lonesome, I haven't studied how to link anything into here, and don't want to paste a picture, cause it takes up too much of Max's program, I bet, so here's partial description:

Long hair, usually in a no nonsense braid, wind tangles it and I can't stand it flying in my face, used to be so red, the kids at school called me Woody woodpecker when it was in a ponytail; now it's got a LOT of white streaks, which friends tell me they'd pay a lot of money to duplicate, because they are in the right places: my bangs mostly.

Green eyes with crinkly smile lines, glasses, always wear loose cotton and Birks.

Some would call me vertically challenged at 5'2"; my sister says dynamite comes in small packages! When I got spayed I went up a few sizes. As an incentive to lose weight, my heart with the leaky valve decided it needed more O2, so...since being tethered to a concentrator or bottles of air, which by the way is the latest rage in Hollywood, I've found a good and safe way to drop. Right now, I am a good rendition of a Rubens woman or the painting over the bar in an old saloon. By this summer, at about 60lbs less, I'll be a bit "less" than either of those.

Oh, and people tell me I have a great smile and I really DO laugh a lot. When I figure out how to link, I might grace ya'll with my mug, ready or not!

(Truth)Six foot nothing. 183 cm. Can;'t find the bathroom scales but I have definitely lost some of the spare tire since I gave up the suds in October--somewhere a little north of 175 lb. Hair brown with quite a bit of grey influence coming in at the sides. Cut it myself cause I'm too damn cheap, live too far from town and don't trust any other family member with the scissors. Only other defense is it looks worse when I _don't_ cut it. Obligatory folkie beard.

well, rick, sorry, but there were no descending ufo's during that shot...i'm sure the rest of the roll would have been a lot more interesting if there had been, though...instead, we had clever ideas such as this one where everyone posed for their own camera or something like that. sometimes 24 pictures is a stretch.

and m'loveli katlaughing, i love your name. i bet it suits you well. i've only been at mt holyoke a short while as i transferred there this fall--and i haven't witnessed the yuppification of noho, but imagine that i'd like it more before it occurred. still a sweet place, though.

I'm gonna keep on picturing you with red hair and a red beard, probably freckles, perched on your front porch with the Computer sittin on top of the washin machine, you're wearin yer Mudcat t-shirt, overalls, and a big grin. You are tall and lanky, and I bet your wife teases you about yer paunch. You live on a ridge in the hills, and yer kids throw dirt clods at the neighbor's dog. You have a jacuzzi on the back porch, for some reason, and your old Takamine is leanin against the refrigerator, which contains a 12 pack of light beer and some turkey baloney which you like to eat right out of the package. You also would really enjoy a well-marbeled New York Strip, but your wife is against it.

From: katlaughing

Oh, Catspaw, what to do, what to do?***BIG GRIN***(I'm gonna abbreviate THAT, too: *BG*!) I'll bet you that's NOT a guy nor a Sinnead wannabe in Erica's picture. Mt Holyoke is in the five college area in western mass., which includes Hampshire, Amherst, Smith, Mt. H colleges and UMASS. The area is a hotbed of uppity women (I mean that as in the bumper stickers: "Uppity Women Unite", "Sisters Pick Up Sister", "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues" and "My Other Car is a Broom") which means a lot of feminists, wiccans, lesbians, and bisexuals. When we lived there it was almost a rite of passage for each new freshman class (at Smith, at least) to sport a certain look which included declaring oneself a lover of women, whether one was or not, and shaving one's head. I had a crop top with a tail 'cause I liked it and I loved the women! Lots of support for one another and open-mindedness abounded there. By the looks of the picture, I'm sure it still does. It can be quite a liberating place for someone who grew up in a more conservative place. There's an excellent book , written by a Smithie, called "Making My Way Out East", which really captures the community. For comic relief, there's an article which made the front page, with picture, of Natl. Enquirer, which featured "Lesbianville, USA" aka Northampton, MA. No, I DON"T read it, but my son still lived there when it came out & called me to tell me to buy a copy. I did and we all had a good laugh over it.

When we lived there, Abby Hoffman and Amy Carter held a protest sit-in at UMASS about the CIA and Nicaragua. When they went on trial it was held right across the street from my little office. I've still got the bumper sticker & button which say "What's so intelligent abut the CIA?"

Anyway, no Sinneads, more like k.d. lang!

Erica: thanks for your kind comments. I don't have anywhere to link a picture from on the Internet, it would have to be from my Corel program and I haven't studied how to do that. I promise I post one when I do. I love my name, too, and I try to live up to it!

OK OK if this thread isn't going to go away I suppose I'd better own up, if only to avoid an LEJ "sneak preview".

Name - Pete M Rank - very Number - Q001459 Description - Height 5' 8"; weight 133 lbs (can't cope with metric); blue eyes; brown hair getting darker as time goes by; ginger beard, I maintain the streaks are blonde, me old china says "Humphh" or words to that effect; light skinned, like O'Hanrahan I burn in seconds, after a year spent out of doors, including some time at sea, I can just about leave my sleeves rolled up without getting burnt. Clothes: as the occasion demands, from choice some high density weave poly cotton trousers and shirts I bought in the UK about 15 years ago.

Sound in wind and limb, sanity doubtful.

I, too, have the fair skin whihc can quickly make me look like a cooked lobster! Just remember, these days, when people have to worry about getting skin cancer from too much sun, it's those of us who cannot go out with being covered with clothing and slathered in sunscreen who will dictate the fashion, much as the "ladies" of Victorian times who used arsenic to whiten their faces, except we, of course, come by it naturally!

And, tattoos can be fun, if one puts them in a spot where they have control over whether they are seen or not; same goes for piercings!

Now.....since this thread is SO long..I will start one called "Mudcat Family Album", and post notices of changes and new stuff there...and try to keep that basic title for all mentions of new stuff...(if you all want to chat here too, ok...but I wont add info here...it is too long and had inaccurate URLs in it...)

I have at least 3-4 new folk to add who have sent pics to me directly, and a couple who have posted links I can steal images from..(I'd like to get us all in one spot if possible)...but I will post links to the page where I got 'em whenever it's relevant...

so...it's off to play...
