The son ( Pat) of a mate of mine, has just started Uni at Sheffield and would like to know the venues of anything happening folk-wise in that City.
I told Pat I would ask you for info or links .

Thanks in advance .
Cheers

Betsy.

It's actually quite difficult to miss the folk scene in Sheffield. there's loads of it! Sheffield Uni has a folk society with about 300 members that have ceilidhs every couple of weeks and a Wednesday night session at the Red Deer on Mappin St. http://www.ceilidhsoc.org/
There are Sunday night sessions with a good mixture of students and local musicians at the Kelham Island Tavern on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month.
I'm sure Jim will be on to tell you about other stuff including the Sheffield Folk festival that is happening at the end of the month.

Cheers
Rich

Cheers Rich - that's a good start and Pat should be viewing your comments shortly.

Thanks again

I second the bit about the very active ceilidh soc at Sheffield Uni, having met a couple of members at sessions. According to my daughter there does not seem to be any sort of similar society at Sheffield Hallam University.

It depends on what he's looking for

Singing there's lots of folk clubs , especially the Red Deer on the second Tuesday and Kelham Island ( the last sunday I think)

Sessions - take your pick. I'm sure that others will put up the English Sessions but there's most nights at Fagins or the Dog and Partridge.   There's the third Tuesday at the Irish Centre ( Especially tonight if anyone hasn't been reading my threads.)

Concert wise there's Dervish at the memorial Hall on the 5th Novemeber and I've just had an e-mail about Peggy Segar, Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy at the Library theatre on 1st Decemeber.

Sheffield Folk Festival web site   www.sheffieldfolkfestival.org (I think)

and the folk network site http://www.folk-network.com

I'm sure other people will add more.

If there is anything specific let me know and I might be able to point him in the right direction.

Ok. I've only been going to the Red Deer for 3 years.   Its the second Thursday and not the Tuesday.

Sorry

+ the Hillsborough Hotel 1st Sunday (with a good possibility of weekly soon) New Barracks 1st Monday. Palm Tree Walkley to be resurected in November weekly on Thursdays. Robin Garside has something on Mondays at Wadsley Bridge and of course the Festival at the end of the month

As well as the South Riding Folk Network site mentioned above, Stirrings magazine is also a good source for what's going on in the area.

And if you run across anything not listed on the above, or which has disappeared (people are keen to tell you when they start things, but tend to forget to mention it when they stop) do please let me know.

webmaster@folk-network.com  will work as well as anything.

There's an excellent old time string band session on the third monday of the month in the Red House, Solly Street 8.30pm. Last night we had 5 fiddles, 2 banjos, 2 mandolins, guitar and bass. On the second (I think) monday there's a bluegrass session.

Julief,
The big (mostly) traditional chorus singing night at the Kelham Island Tavern is the fourth Sunday of each month, not the last Sunday.
(However I expect that it will probably be bumped from Christmas Day to Boxing Day, or something like that, this year.)

Sorry about the last posting, hit a wrong key (pissed again last night!)However, to continue. Kiveton Park Folk Club is just outside the city, easily reached be bus and train. It's every Tuesday night without fail. Good company, free grub ( that should interest a student!) cheap bar ( that should as well!)and a really friendly crowd. All are welcome and invited to perform. Mainly trad-ish but no-one excluded.Occasional guests, next one Damien Barber on 8th November. our website is at www.kivetonfolk@fs.net, I think.

Cheers    Andy

And can I put a plug in for Sheffield City Morris, one of the UK´s best known and widely travelled morris teams. Practise is Monday night followed by a glass of tea in the Gardener´s Rest. And there is often a session there on a Monday night.
