Lyr Req: If I Knew Just What to Say

I realize that this doesn't quite fit into the folk/blues boundaries but I have searched high and low for these lyrics. I was so successful with my last request here that I know someone out there can point me in the right direction or provide the answer. Here's some of the lyrics: Since you've gone, the weather's turned much warmer There's really not a lot for me to tell Sometimes you're the last thing I would dream of Other times you're the only dream at all...

I'm still drinking gin when I can buy it I sure bought a lot of it today..

The song is "The Last Thing On My Mind" or something very similar. I believe it's from their "Too Stuffed to Jump" LP. I'll see if I can track down lyrics for you.

Thanks a lot. I would really appreciate the lyrics. They've been taunting me for some time now.

Ha ha! I found it..on some guy's website in Australia. God bless Altavista!!If I Just Knew What to Say Lyrics by S. Wright

Since you're gone the weather's turned much warmer There's really not a lot for me to tell Not much work here and I've lost a pound or two But losing things is one thing I do well

And I'd miss you if I knew what I was missing And I'd call for you if I just knew what to say I'm still drinkin' gin when I can buy it And I sure bought a lot of it today I still never win but I'd love to try it And I'd still take you back if you would stay

Ah you'd do it if you knew what you were doing And I'd tell you if I just knew what to say

But I'm not doing as bad as it might seem love And even though I'm slippin' I won't fall Sometimes you're the last thing I would dream of But sometimes you're the only thing at all (c) Whachacallyer Music (BMI)

This was my favorite song performed by the late John Vandiver from Texas.

Amazing Rhythm Aces - If I Just Knew What To Say
(written by: Wright)

From the album "Too Stuffed To Jump" and Between You & Us

Since you've gone the weather's turned much warmer
There's really not enough for me to tell
Not much work here and I've lost a pound or two
Losin' things is one thing I do well
And I'd miss you if I knew what I was missin'
And I'd call for you if I just knew what to say

I'm still drinkin' gin when I can buy it
I sure bought a lot of it today
I still never win but I'd love to try it
I'd still take you back if you would stay
Oh you'd do it if you knew what you were doin'
And I'd tell you if I just knew what to say

But I'm not doin' as bad as it might seem, love
Even though I'm slippin' I won't fall
Sometimes you're the last thing I would dream of
Sometimes you're the only thing that I want

All the Rhythm Aces stuff has been re-issued on CD, some CDs have two albums on one CD.. haven't checked to see if this one has been, but try Collector's Choice Music. I picked up a couple of CDs of theirs and really like the group.

In my head I hear a recording of this song by a female vocalist but can't quite pin it down. Anybody? Or am I just hallucinating?

Whoever it is, sings the last line of the 1st verse "And I'd call you up if I just knew...." Some one with a voice and a style that fall between those of Bonnie Raitt and Maria Maldaur (spelling). Bett Midler???

(I really liked the Amazing Rhthym Aces too. Had not thought about them for a long time. Nice to be reminded.)

Janie

Bonnie Raitt????

The Aces were great. Russell Smith is too cool. My brother taped a PBS show, "Nashville Skyline", I think, which had Russell singing a song he wrote , "Pearls". I learned it , play it and it's my daughter's favorite. Never heard it anywhere else. The man can write a song.
