18 Oct 05 - 05:57 PM (#1585690) Subject: Lyr Req: Just as the Tide was Flowing From: Tattie Bogle Can anyone help me with the words for this AS SUNG BY ELIZA CARTHY? I have found words in the DT, but they are not the same as she sings: there are 2 more verses on the end compared with the version in the DT, as well as some other variations on the way. I'm particularly struggling to make out the last verse, after "the lady's gold they bandied, And ..........................will you go To the public bar where the brandy flows ....................that will do so Just as the tide was flowing" The song is on her Anglicana CD. Thanks in anticipation, TB |

19 Oct 05 - 01:06 AM (#1585927) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just as the Tide was Flowing From: GUEST There's a version in Marrow bones, collected from WALTER diment in dorset in 1906 thats a nice version but I can't remember if it's the version Eliza does, her CD is at my other house. The last verse says:- We both shook hands and off we steer Jack Tar drinks rum and brandy To keep his shipmates in good cheer The lady's gold is handy And along with some other pretty maid I will go To a Public house where the Brandy do flow Success to the maid that will do so Just as the tide is a-flowing A little different than the version I sing tho' I can't remember where I got my version, probably from a recording of a source singer but then Eliza usually gets it from the source too. Good Luck M |

All very similar except for very slight variations. I've not heard Eliza's version but suspect that she would have gone back to one of these. Click |
19 Oct 05 - 09:00 AM (#1586132) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just as the Tide was Flowing From: greg stephens Keith A of Herrtford's post is not the Eliza Carthy (Anglicana) version. The relevant verses on her record are (as far as I can judge, there's a couple of vague bits): Upon the grass she then did roll Her colour it kept changing This pretty maid called out "Alas Dont let your mind be ranging" She gave him twenty pounds in store Saying "Meet me when you will, there's more For a jolly sailor I adore" Just as the tide was flowing So they kissed shook hands and when they part Jack Tar drank rum and brandy And to keep his shipmates in good cheer The lady's gold came handy And with some other young girl you'll go To the public bar where the brandy flows Give me no lad that will do so Just as the tide was flowing. I urge anyone who has this record to have a listen to check my transcription. And while doing so, answer this simple question: has the English folk revival produced a more sublime recording than this? If so, lead me to it. |

Folksongs have a lot of variants! Eliza Carthy's sings what are essentially Harry Cox's lyrics, with one significant thought-out change, and one inadvertent mangling(I would guess). |
