On this day, October 24 in 1901, Anna Taylor (1858-1921) became the first person to ride a barrel over Niagara Falls & nevertheless live. She did not acquire fame or fortune by it, though.

Today, she is a well-noted renditioner of Scottish folksong. She currently lives in Haddington, Scotland with husband President Taylor, another well-noted folk-bearer and ABC programmer & Bronson Project coordinator.

Well done Sid!

        cho: Roll out the barrel
We'll have a barrel of fun
            Roll out the barrel
We've got the blues on the run.
            Zing! Boom! Tar-rar-rel
Ring out a song of good cheer!
Now's the time to roll the barrel
            For the gang's all here.

My first trip dawn old Lake Erie,
        With some sailors to explore;
                A-singing, way, Niagara,
                Below Niagara Falls.
        Then I met Rosy O'Flannagan,
Best of all the Buffalo whores.
                A-singing, way, Niagara,
                Below Niagara Falls.

If no missing paragraph, certainly a mysterious temporal (and nomenclatural) discontinuity in the narrative... or is it really just me being thick?

Well, I may be being odd, don't blame yourself. I can assure you that Ann Taylor (aka 'Sid') lives in Haddington, near Edinburgh and has show dogs and sings excellently (well, to be strictly accurate - always a goal of the Happy File - I haven't actually heard her sing in 30 years but she was excellent then and still sings - I firmly believe still excellently). I got an e-mail from her just today so I know she's in good humo(u)r. President Taylor is also alive and well and sings excellently, too. And plays guitar & other stuff. He stopped by Florida for a visit 15 or 20 years ago.

I'm confused too.

If she died in 1921, how is she still alive?

I wouldn't have posted, but I do a song about barrels and Niagara.

(headslap!) Oh! He's being clever! Connecting two unrelated Anna Taylors... (it's like the Sherlock Holmes episode on PBS the other night -- if the suspect was in two places at once, maybe there are two of them...)

getting back to it finally

And then of course there is that recent Irish song of resistance: Over the fall, over the fall, it's hard to believe they went over the fall
