Halloween jig problem

The frost is on the pumpkin and the tomatoes are toast, so I'm looking for a MIDI or sticks+dots for The Halloween Jig. I found a Mudcat message which has the following ABC for it --

M:6/8
L:1/8
K:D
F |:B3 Bcd |c2 A ABc |B2 G GAB |A2 F FEF |B3 Bcd |c2 A ABc |def edc |1B3 BAF :|2B3 Bde ::f2 f fed |cde Adc |Bcd dcB |cFF Fde |f2 f fed |cde Adc |Bcd cBA |1B3 Bde :|2B3 B3 :|

but the converter I use at Concertina.net says it won't convert. Maybe there's an evil spirit in it!

Can anybody help, either with a MIDI or by seeing what's wrong with the ABC?

(If there's more than one Halloween jig, send any or all.)

Thanks, Sorcha!

How did you do that? Google couldn't find that tune, and it wasn't on MIDIsite, the MIDI search engine, which indexes 800,000 songs.

Whence cameth?

It won't convert because it's incomplete. The compulsory X and T fields are missing. Add

X:1
T:Halloween Jig

at the beginning.

All right. I am now going to get out an instrument and see if what Sorcha's jig is like. I would like to hear from everyone who plays the piece between now and October 31st.

Leenia, it's from JC's Tunefinder, always the first resort for tunes by title.

Okay, thanks. I shall add JC's Tunefinder to my favorites.

JC says "TUNETITLE is the "canonicalized" title, capitalized and all non-letters removed."

If a Halloween jig is canonicalized, does it become the mere October-Thirty-First Jig?

Watch this thread. I hope to post a MIDI here.

Now I'm going to see if I can find my string of purple outdoor lights.

Can't find the purple lights.

Can't post the MIDI either. However, if anybody who doesn't do ABC wants to play the Halloween jig, they can go to JC's Tunefinder and print the GIF.

I found that the jig isn't very blood-curdling as it stands, so I entered it into Noteworthy as a MIDI file, then I changed it from the key of D to the key of C (Am, really.) I will be playing the tune with friends, including our guitarist. Putting it in Am gives her the chance to use the deep, beautiful chords of Am and Em.

The tune still seemed to need something spooky, so I tried ornaments. It works. To make it sound like Halloween, add grace notes to the longer notes. Have the grace notes be one step above or below the long note, whichever sounds right to you.

For example, before the A of the first note, flick in a tiny G#. Instinct will tell you where to put these. Have fun.

Thanks, Animaterra! I'm pleased to hear that somebody likes the technique. Don't you teach first grade? You can play it for the children, first straight and then with the ornaments. I bet they can tell the difference.

If you're looking for another spooky sounding song, leenia, King of the Faeries sounds rather Halloweeny, too!

Nice tune. I think it would go well with Coleraine

It's basically "Shepherd O Shepherd" with a slight modal change isn't it? Did Martin Carthy take the tune from the jig, or did the jig come from the tune, or were they in parallel? What's the provenance of the jig?
