Happy Birthday!

26th pres. Ted Roosevelt

born 10/27/1858
(d. Jan 6, 1919)

        Roosevelt in the White House,
Drinkin' out of a silver cup
        McKinley in the graveyard,
        He'll never wake up
        He's gone a long time.

"White House Blues," Charlie Poole & the North Carolina Ramblers,
recorded 1926, Anthology of American Folk Music, Vol. B, Side 2, Tr 6.

We admire TR. He created practical conservation & environmentalism in the US. He wanted to be sure to preserve places where you could shoot animals for trophies. Stick that in your PC.

Also: "Today's the day the Teddy bears have their picnic."

The president is the eponym of teddy bears. He actually gave permission for them to be named after him.

Must demur:

It isn't the coughin' that carries you off -- it's the coffin they carries you off in.

Abby: Gain two assonances, lose one rhyme -- I'd say it's about even.
