Does anyone out there have a clue as to the identity of this gentleman and does anyone have the lyrics and tune of the song by the same name ? Harry

I think it originated in Waterford ?or possibly Limerick. The word "toddy" refers to the tin cup that workmen used to brew their tea in - according to a friend of mine(RIP) who hailed from Limerick County. The rhythm of the the words as quoted suggest "In Glendalough lived an oul' saint...". By the way, does anyone know the rest of this one? Annraoi

This must be a wind-up, or a nonsense song. The man's name is obviously made up. Genuine songs don't invent people. Stickie.

Stickie, that is one of the most patronising statements it has ever been my misfortune to meet !!! :-(( Why shouldn't people make up names if they wish to? Who lays down the rules ? And who sayys that Tom Toozick is a made-up name anyway ? I don't suppose you were christened "Stickie" !!! MG

There's a song in Irish with the English-language title, "Tom Toozick the Gintleman" in "Ceól ár Sínsear", compiled by Father Athair Pádraig Breathnach, Dublin, 1934. I sent Annraoi/Harry... a photocopy.

It's my recollection that I've heard a song with this name and that it's related to the song which Robert Cinnamond sang as "Tom Tadger" - Jackie Boyce from Mill Street, Comber, Co Down knows something about this - he may be in the phone book.

I'm intrigued to see that author/lecturer Alan Titley has 'Tom Toozick, the gintleman' as his presentation topic at the Celtic (Languages) conference in Belfast, N Ireland this Saturday.

conference details available from celtic@qub.ac.uk
