New Harmony Group in Wigan England

I'm starting a new group for anyone who wants to try harmony singing. The first meeting is this Wednesday, 2nd November, at the Swan & Railway Hotel, Wallgate, Wigan (opposite North Western Train Station). The function room is at the back of the pub on the ground floor, and is non-smoking for the Harmony Group. There's a car park at the rear. Start time is 8.30pm prompt (finish time 10.30pm). We'll start off with some vocal warm-ups, then simple rounds, and progress to basic harmony techniques. You don't need to read music, just be able to sing the right notes, have some sense of rhythm, and above all enthusiasm.

There will be a minimal charge per session, but the opening night will be free. And anyone starting after the opening night will have their first night free as a 'taster'.

Email Wigan Harmony wiganharmony@hotmail.co.uk

Meetings will be on the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Wednesdays of the month. On the 3rd Wednesday, the 'This Time Next Year' Folk Club will hold a singaround in the same room.

I'd love to see some Mudcatters there.

Joan

I might have been tempted to turn up, despite the requirement to sing the right notes, if it had been any other day than Wednesday. I think I'll stick to inflicting the good folk at the Alison Arms with my feeble attempts at a tune (never mind a harmony).

I do look forward to visiting Wigan Folk Club in a few months to be bowled over by the vocal harmonies. We all have a lot to learn (some -- me -- a lot more then others) and to me its learning to sing/play better that makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks for all the good wishes. And as for finding the time, it's not so much finding it as organising it. You know the old saying about if you want something done, ask somebody who's busy to do it, because they're the ones who know how to organise themselves. In general, people who don't do a lot can't organise themselves to do anything other than watch the conversation-killer in the corner of the room;-))! Not that I'd want to say anything that's at all controversial ...

But keep music live!

And if you want to have a bash at harmony singing and you're in Wigan on Wednesday, come and have a go. (Sorry if the night's inconvenient, it was the only night this particular venue had free - but depending on how things work out, I'm not ruling out a change of venue and night at some stage.)
