29 Oct 05 - 12:53 PM (#1593197) Subject: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: greg stephens Greyhound Inn, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. Wednesday, November 2, from 8 on. Not strictly accurate to call it an English session, please turn up and play and sing whatever you fancy. But the landlady has asked the Boat Band to turn up and host the evening, and we will definitely try to steer things in an English direction. Plus the odd two step, no doubt. The pub is suitably situated for easy access from north and south: two miles from the M6, and Carlisle and London are equidistant. All musical instruments welcome. There is a skip for bodhrans and shaky eggs in the carp ark. |

What tunes are played most frequently at "English" sessions. We have been trying to get a couple going over here, any suggestions for material appreciated. Thanks, JohnB. |

13 Feb 06 - 05:23 PM (#1667577) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: greg stephens You are speaking in riddles JohnB. I've only just spotted your previous post from January, by the way: dont quite know where to begin to answer, there's a lot of English tunes knocking around. All I know is the most widely known English fiddle tune is Soldiers Joy, followed by the Sailor's (or College) Hornpipe. While, I jus made that fact up, but it could well be true. As to what your last post meant, the Lord alone knows, and he ain't tellin' I will say that we quite frequently sing The Sloop John B at sessions, but that's another question. Or possibly answer. |

14 Feb 06 - 04:55 AM (#1667970) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: GUEST We went to an English sesh at Chippenham and were delighted that the only 3 tunes that we can play all appeared - Winster Gallop, Jimmie Allen, Salmon Tails. (There are other tunes that we can play the first line of, or even all through at home, its a different matter in the pub!). Soldiers Joy is a nice tune to dance to, but its got more notes than I've got fingers. |

14 Feb 06 - 09:51 PM (#1668782) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: JohnB I'm just looking for what would be the most popular/frequent/best/most liked/played, tunes. Which are common at "English" sesions, that's all. Thanks for any help, JohnB. |

15 Feb 06 - 03:50 PM (#1669659) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: JohnB Thanks Treewind, the site only gives you the first thirty or so tunes for free. You have to buy a CD for the total package. It does however give you a list of titles, which is extremely useful. There are a couple of fledgling English sessions springing up over here in Canada, so I'm just trying to get ahead of the game for my next trip home. Thanks and keep them coming, JohnB. |

03 Apr 06 - 06:04 PM (#1709721) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: greg stephens Next session Wednesday April 12, geyhound, penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. Session is hosted by the Boat Band. Coincidentally, the fRoots Playlist for the May magazine edition actually starts streaming on fRoots Radio on April 12. featuring the ten hottest new releases for the month. As usual, mainly world music stuff will be featured, but on this occasion there is a a strong English presence on the list: Boat Band. Kathryn Tickell and John Boden.(or possibly Jon Boden, I find those two a bit confusing). |

04 Apr 06 - 01:10 PM (#1710327) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: greg stephens Well, Ted, you can PM me, and arrange to send a cheque and I'll send you one. Or you could drive to Forton service station and go in the "Food from the Fells Shop" where thwy stock it, as do a lot of lake District places. You culd write to Harbourtown records and claim that you will review the CD for some mythical magazine called "Hull Folk Review" or something. You could write to me and pretend that you are intending to promote a Boat Band gig, and that you need a copy of the CD in order to go into BBC Radio East Riding to do an interview on "Good morning Hull" to advertise the gig. You could go to your local library, ask them to get a copy, then when they get one, take it out, go home and copy it. There are a few ideas to be going on with. |

05 Apr 06 - 05:46 AM (#1710922) Subject: RE: English session: Stoke-on-Trent From: Paco Rabanne All splendid ideas there Greg. I think I shall follow my original plan and simply burgle Forton Service Station this very evening. |
